    This week has been an exciting time at School.

    On Monday, we bid farewell to our senior students and teachers as they departed on their grade 5 and 6

    camp to Forest Lodge Farm. Camp is always a wonderful time getting to know others and your own inner

    abilities when away from home. I loved seeing all of the grins in the photos.

    We hope you all have a restful weekend. Thank you for being wonderful ambassadors of our

    school.

    Thank you so much to our PFA for all of the work you do! This week you have filled the

    classes with the yummy smell of hot chips and I have been so jealous of the scrumptious Anzac biscuits

    I have seen carried back from the PFA kitchen. Thank you once again for taking the time to provide

    opportunities for our students.

    Today, Friday the 4th of May I had the absolute pleasure of presenting our Prep- Grade Four students

    with their ‘Student of the Month awards’. I would like to take this time to personally congratulate each

    and every one of them on their award and hope that this is one of many they will receive.

    Tuesday the 15th of May our Grade Three and

    Five students will begin their 2018 NAPLAN

    tests. NAPLAN stands for National Assessment

    Program- Literacy and Numeracy. Students,

    within these grade levels, across the country complete a series of timed, standardised tests. The testing

    timetable is as follows;

    The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do,

    and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their

    child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national

    minimum standard. Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background

    and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is

    treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

    If you have a student participating in this year’s NAPLAN test these helpful hints might be useful;

    • Make sure your child gets lots of rest the night before each test

    • Get ready for school the night before to avoid rushing and your child getting frustrated

    • Make sure your child has breakfast each morning before school

    • Be encouraging and let your child know that their best is always good enough

    If you would like any further information or to discuss your child’s involvement within the 2018 NAPLAN

    test please contact Meredith Smith, Acting Principal by Thursday the 10th of May

    PFA Page * Cooking every Wednesday

    * Mother’s Day Stall Thursday 10th May & Friday 11th May

    * Hot Chip Day Tuesday 29th May

    The PFA Team are very excited to continue the Cooking Program at Cockatoo Primary School this term. Cooking will run every Wednesday on a rotating timetable. It takes quite a few weeks to get through all the

    grades in the school. Every student in the school will enjoy learning to cook some delicious recipes. All

    recipes will be made “from scratch”, no jars of sauce or packets of pasta sauce etc will be used. We want all students to learn to cook, and learn the basic skills required.

    Each grade is divided into small groups, so that everyone is included and all group members get a turn to

    stir, mix, etc. While the items are cooking, students clean up and do their dishes. When the items are

    cooked, the students will be able to eat what they have made...... all students will be making Anzac Biscuits.

    Mother’s Day Stall - Thursday 10th May

    PFA will be holding a Mother’s Day Stall at school on Thursday morning 10th May. We have sourced gifts from all over Australia (and beyond) so students at our school can purchase gifts for

    their Mum, Grandma, Nanna, Special Person….. at very reasonable prices. We have gifts ranging from $1 to $12. Please send your child along with their spending money & a

    plastic or carry bag to put their purchases in.

    Grades attend the Mother’s Day Stall one at a time with their Teacher. If any Dads (or Mums) want to pop in to do their own shopping the stall will be open from 9 ‘til 11am on Thursday 10th May & from

    1.30 ‘til 2pm on Friday 11th May. Please help support our School and do your Mothers Day Shopping

    at our Stall.

    If there are any Mums or Dads out there who can help us set up the Mother’s Day Stall on

    Wednesday 9th May from 2pm onwards we would really appreciate your help. If you’re able to help Wednesday 9th May from 2pm, Thursday 10th May from 9.15am ‘til approx 11.30am or Friday

    11th May from 1.30pm onwards please come along to the Brekky Club Room. We really do need your help to make sure these events can run for the kids at our school.

    SPECIAL EVENTS:

    Good luck to Students attending the GATEWAYS program on Monday the 7th of April. We know you will

    have an amazing time and be wonderful ambassadors of our school. Mother’s Day Stall Thursday the 10th of May. Students are welcome to bring some money to buy a gift for their Mum, Nanna/ Grandma or Aunty. Thank you to our wonderful PFA for sourcing wonderful items for sale. We will have some very lucky ladies opening their presents Sunday morning. We would like to say thank you to all of the ‘Mums’ for everything they do and we hope you enjoy your special day.

    Reminder to all families that our school now has two fruit breaks every day. The first is at 10am and the second is at 12:30pm. The fruit break is an important part of our student’s day. Not only does it increase their daily intake of fruits and vegetables (always a good thing) but it helps to give the body, which has a follow on effect to the brain energy to enable it to focus.
