Forest foods vital for food and nutritional security in Congo Basin. New report based on a decade of FAO work in 10 African countries FAO forestry newsroom 19/04/17 The contribution of forest foods to food and nutritional security is greatly underestimated, according to a new report on the Congo Basin issued today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Living in and from the forests of Central Africa is based on a decade of work across central Africa and the Congo Basin, which is home to 130 million people, many of whom still depend directly – just as their ancestors did – on non-wood forest products. Groundbreaking land use survey to support reversal of deforestation in Zambia FAO forestry newsroom 26/04/17 Zambia’s forests bring many benefits to the country, from protecting watersheds and regulating water flow into the country’s river systems. They also contribute to around six percent of Zambia’s GDP through employment and wood and non-wood forest products. Consequently, deforestation is not only bad for the global fight against climate change, but also for Zambia’s economy. Forest assessment and monitoring a critical step in reversing deforestation in Zambia Facing one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, the Zambian government has joined forces with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the government of Finland – to carry out the country's largest ever natural resource inventory. The Integrated Land Use Assessment Survey, ILUA II, will help the government and its partners to assess the extent of the country's remaining forest resources and both the rates of, and reasons for, deforestation. This data will help inform more sustainable forest management - good news for Zambia's economy, her people and for the global climate.
