Lenaka La Tshukudu project done and dusted, Anton Fouché and his support team will embark on a second phase to raise funds and educate communities on rhino conservation. The initial 518km walk from Pretoria to Musina yielded no actual funds for rhinos as the money raised along the way only covered 75% of the project cost for phase 1.

On his first walk Fouché was accompanied by a true to life replica of a Rhino called George, which he pulled all the way. This was part of the project’s awareness campaign.

During phase 2, Fouché will visit schools and businesses in major cities like Bloemfontein, Durban and Cape Town to raise money and educate communities about the ills of rhino poaching. Money raised will be used to buy equipment for a company that provides anti poaching services.

Funds will also be used for the Rhino rewards project where rewards will be given for information about rhino poaching following successful arrests. For more information on the project, contact Wayne Derksen on 084 585 5759.

Horror crash on the N1Five people died and two were seriously injured in a collision on the N1 just north of Mokopane, after the Zebediela toll plaza on Sunday. The driver of a Toyota Corolla carrying six passengers, heading towards Mokopane, apparently lost control of his car when a tyre blew-out. The Corolla collided with another vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

Two men (29 and 32), a woman (39) and the two small children (3 months and 1 year 6 months old) died on the scene. Both drivers sustained serious injuries, one was taken to Mokopane Hospital and the other one to Polokwane Provincial Hospital for medical treatment. A case of culpable homicide was opened and further investigations are pending.

Tragic end to love trianglePretoria - A Pretoria police constable who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her lover was arrested by members of the Mokopane Highway Patrol after he fled the scene of the crime on Friday morning.

The 27yearold fled Pretoria in a state vehicle and the Highway patrol reacted when a lookout was given for the vehicle.

Police spokesperson, Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale, said the trouble started on Thursday night, when the constable visited the house of the 21yearold woman and found her with another man. “An argument ensued which resulted to the constable assaulting the man. On Friday morning the situation ended in tragedy for the two victims when the constable returned to the woman’s house and after another heated argument, shot and killed the victims fled the scene.”

Mokopane Highway Patrol pulled him off the road near the Zebediela tollgate. His service pistol was confiscated and he appeared in court on Monday on charges of murder.

Police officer arrestedA police officer from Witpoort appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of theft and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to a spokesperson at the Witpoort police station, the officer was found in possession of stolen liquor and two unlicensed firearms at his house on Saturday.

It is suspected that the police officer was part of a group of six men who broke into a liquor store in Witpoort and stole liquor to the value of R15 000.

The case has been postponed until 8 October and all six suspects will remain in custody.

The best way to make sense of the impor-tance of pre-preparation before a mountain bike race is to envision yourself and your bike as a motor vehicle, writes Christie Thomas, an experienced mountainbike racer.

"What do you do before you undertake a long road trip? You thoroughly check your vehicle and inspect it for damage, or parts that need to be replaced. Your bike is your vehicle, the wheels that will carry you from point A to point B. Your race is your long road trip. Take care of your bike and it will take care of you! Before a big race:

offer sufficient grip, is the sealant still fresh, are the spokes still tight?

Is your chain still tight? Is it cleaned 3and lubricated?

"Wash and polish your bike the night before the race. Lubricate the chain. Fill your water bottle. Be proud of your ‘vehicle’ and show you care by arriving at the race with it looking ‘spick & span’.

"You are the engine that will drive your vehicle. You need to make sure that you have ‘filled’ your stomach with enough lowGI fuel to carry you through from start to finish. Low GI is essential for a steady supply of energy to your body.

"A light pasta (whole wheat), or easily digestible meal, the night before is good. Beware of consuming too much meat, as this takes to long to digest and may ‘rob’ you of energy the next day.

"I find the best prerace morning meal is a bowl of oatmeal porridge or s o m e t h i n g like fortified

Hy het al drie die roetes gehelp uitlê en meer as een keer gery. Hy het ingestem om Noorde-like Nuus lesers ‘n bietjie meer te vertel oor wat hulle te wagte kan wees.

“Enige iemand kan die 10km roete voltooi en fietsryers kan verwag om baie diere te sien. Die roete kan vinnig voel aan die begin, maar spaar jou energie, want daar is ‘n paar verrassings soos kort stukkies sand hier en daar, maar moenie bekommerd wees nie daar is 'n waterpunt so 5km van die wegspring af. Die terugkom is teen ‘n effense opdraande, maar niks ernstigs nie.

“Die 30km sal vir onervare ryers baie meer uitdagend wees. So 8km in die wedren in gaan jy ‘n lekker stukkie opdraande kry maar dit is alles die moeite werd as jy bo uitkom vanwaar jy oor die hele dorp en omgewing kan uitkyk. Boonop word jy dan beloon met enkelspoor bospaadjies teen die berg af.

"A banana is an excellent ‘energy’ snack to be carried during the race. Consume it halfway through the race to make sure you have enough ‘petrol’ to get you to the finish. I like to eat an ‘energy’ snack at least every hour during the race. Peanut butter is also an excellent source of energy, a good combination of fat and protein.

"When the race is done you will need ‘recovery’ food to assist your body to bounce back after all you have put it through. The easiest, most readily available source of carbohydrate and protein is low fat chocolate milk. Milo is always my first choice, and I can pick it up at any café enroute to the race.

"No engine can run without making sure there is enough water in the radiator!

For a short race (20km), one bottle (750ml) of clean filtered water should be sufficient to carry you through to the end. Make sure your bottle is empty at the end of the race!

"The rule of thumb is to hydrate every 20 minutes, whether you are thirsty or not!

F"or a longer race (40+km), you would need one bottle of water and one bottle of energy drink. Start with the water. When you are halfway through the water, start alternating with the energy drink. The energy drink will replenish important salts and electrolytes lost during the ride.

"Make sure to fill up your water bottle at the available water points if you are running low."

Ons maak seker dat die wilde diere se hokke mooi gesluit is, want op jou laaste draai voor jy klaar maak ry jy verby hulle...

Die 55km roete is natuurlik vir die fikser klomp of diegene wat regtig ‘n uitdaging soek. Dieselfde roete as die 30km word gevolg, maar met ‘n ekstra stuk by wat jou en jou fiets b e h o o r l i k sal toets. Ná elke opdraande is daar darem ‘n afdraande. Op hierdie roete gaan f i e t s r ye r s 6 0 0 m v e r t i k a a l klim oor die 55km a f s t a n d . Waterpunte is op 14km, 27km en 40km. "

Die Ellisras Hoërskool Matrieks van 1998 het Saterdag hulle 15-jaar reünie by Mbali Lodge net buite Lephalale gehou. Oom Faantjie se laaste nootOom Faantjie Nel wat gereeld by die Piet Potgieter Monument Ouetehuis se funksies en gesellighede klavier gespeel het, is Saterdag-oggend op 83-jarige ouderdom oorlede.

Dit is maar ‘n week nadat sy broer dood is. Sovêr die tehuis personeel se kennis strek het Oom Faantjie geen familie wat meer in Mokopane woon nie.

“Ons weet net van ‘n stief sussie wat verlede week geskakel het om te laat weet dat sy broer oorlede is,” het Marthie Venter gesê. Oom Faantjie was in sy jong dae lid van ‘n boereorkes. Hy het die laaste tyd moeilik gepraat en was die week voor sy dood glo baie swak. Teen druktyd kon daar nog nie vir hom ‘n begrafnis datum bevestig word nie.

‘63 se matrieks hou reünieHoërskool Piet Pot-gieter se 1963 matriek-groep het onlangs hul 50-jaar reünie gehou. Die klomp oud-leerders het in Mokopane bymekaargekom en saam met die huidige skoolhoof, Jas Hansen, gekuier op die gronde van die hoërskool waar hulle ook ‘n wilde pruimboom as nalaten-skap daar geplant het.

Krugies bring hul kant die vakansie

Raymandi Goosen (regs) van Mokopane Gimnastiekklub (MGK) het haarself bewys as die beste vlak 4 dogters gimnas (18 jaar en jonger) in die land met 'n eerste algehele plek. Sy was onder meer eerste vir haar vloer- en balk-reekse en het 'n tweede plek vir die dames-burg verdien by die nasionale gimnastiek kampioenskappe.

SA Games is die grootste nasionale kompetisie waarin 'n gimnas in SuidAfrika (vlak 47) kan deelneem.

Die SuidAfrikaanse Gimnastiek Federasie (SAGF) het in die verskillende provinsies hul SA’s gehou om gimnaste se vernuf in al die dissiplines te toets. WAG (dogters artisties) het deelgeneem in Centurion by die Matsport Centre aan die einde van September.

Lize Janse van Rensburg (14 en jonger) (regs) het ook goed presteer met 'n derde plek vir haar spronge.

Nog 'n MGKgimnas, Shani Dreyer (regs bo saam met afrigter Marinda Marshall), het teen 61 van ons land se beste gimnaste (10 jaar) deelgeneem en algeheel 28ste plek behaal.

Die ritmiese kompetisie se SA’s is twee weke terug in Durban gehou by die KwazuluNatal Universiteit.

MGK uitblinker, Suné Janse van Rensburg (15 and onder) (foto regs onder) het Limpopo daar verteenwoordig.

"Sy het 'n asemrowende vertoning gegee," vertel haar afrigter, Marinda Marshall van MGK. Sy het ook nasionaal eerste gekom met haar hoepel, tweede met haar balreeks en het algeheel derde in SA geëindig!

MGK is baie trots op al die gimnaste en weet dat hul harde werk vrugte afgewerp het. Marshall vertel met 'n groot glimlag dat lesers gerus die Noordelike Nuus kan dophou: "Volgende jaar gaan ons die land wys Limpopo is kampioenwêreld!"

Sy nooi ouers om MGK te kontak by 079 217 8410 en te reël vir 'n gratis gimnastiekklas ter bekendstelling van die groeiende sport. "Gimnastiek ontwikkel jou kind fiesies, en dit vorm ook hul karakter," verduidelik Marshall.

WB en Rian van Niekerk, twee renjaers van Moko-pane, het beide Saterdag eerste plekke in hul afsonderlike afdelings by Kyalami losgery. Dié twee broers het as tjokkertjies van 11 en 12 jaar oud op Mokopane se Ovaalbaan met hul loopbane begin.

Hulle het eers net op Mokopane en Polokwane se ovaalbane gejaag, maar gou begin soek na nuwe, vinniger uitdagings. Nou ry hulle al vir die afgelope drie jaar ook langbaan resies op bane soos Zwartkops, Phakisa en Kyalami.

Die afgelope Saterdag was ‘n uitmergelende en baie warm resies met die kwik wat hemelhoog gestyg het.

Tog het beide se renmotors hul goed gedra en albei drywers het hul uiterste bes gelewer. Die Van Niekerk Broers, Rian en WB, het Saterdag

elkeen ‘n eerste plek op Kyalami losgejaag.

Fish the first breakline or dropoff closest to those shallow feeding flats you were targeting earlier. Concentrate on cover or structure found on the top edge of the drop or at the deepest part of the drop. Often bass will be suspended off the drop, and will pick up your bait as it falls over the edge.

Stealth is EssentialWhen you are fishing in shallow water it is

of the utmost importance to keep boat noise down. Do not use your main motor, unless you are ready to leave the area. It is better to use your electric motor at a low constant speed than a higher intermittent speed. It is said that the constant vibration is less disturbing to shallowwater bass than the onoff disturbance caused by the sudden surge of the blade. Make sure the propwash is directed away from the area you are fishing.

Do not slam your hatch or your tackle box lids. Do not shout at your wife or your kids. Do not allow the boat to slam into trees, rocks, jetties, or other cover found in shallow water.

In other words; be stealthy as a leopard stalking its prey!

Spawning season in the Northern provinces should just about be over.

In some areas bass may still be in a postspawn mode that could result in some tough fishing, but in the more northern regions where bass started spawning earlier, bass should start thinking about food again. Early summer is a great time to be on the water fishing.

When bass start feeding after postspawn, they feed voraciously. This is the best time to play with all the power baits in your tackle box.

Early morning and late evening are good times for a top water bite. Poppers, chuggers, pencil baits and buzz baits worked over shallow feeding flats will entice many bass to blow up all over your lure. Be warned though: bass hooked on a top water

Fishing with Christie

lure tend to jump a lot, and you may lose more fish than you land, but it is great fun!

Look for good feeding flats close to the areas where you found bass spawning earlier in the spring. Good feeding flats will be close to deep water, have some form of cover or structure situated on them, and must have large numbers of baitfish in the area. No bait = no bass. Remember, a long shallow point can also be considered a good feeding ‘flat’.

Midmorning and late afternoon As the sun moves up higher and the day becomes brighter, swop the top water lures for shallow swimming lures. Stick baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, chatter bait, lipless crank baits, shallowdiving and/or balsa crank baits can all be worked over and through shallow cover.

Gradually pull away from the shallower water you were fishing early in the morning, and start fishing slightly deeper.

The bass should still be cruising the flats, but will start moving toward the first breakline or dropoff adjacent to the flats. Instead of fishing randomly, start concentrating more on the cover or structure found on the flat. As the sun rises bass will start to move toward the shadows and ambush points offered by the cover and the deeper water.

Midday is the time to switch to deeperdiving crank baits, jigs, and soft plastic lures. You can still fish with your spinner bait, but will now have to slow down the retrieve and slowroll the bait so that it can be
