Police warn that cash robberies are on the increase and vulnerable people such as the elderly, women, children, the disabled and business owners to explore alternatives to withdrawing and carrying large sums of cash.

Consider paying accounts electronically ,making use of cell phone banking, internet transfers or ATMs to do your banking.

Tips for small businesses A small business which is cash based

and needs to deposit money on a regular ba-sis at the bank should apply the following:

Alternate the days and times on which you deposit cash. Never make your bank vis-its public, even to people close to you. Do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are standing in the bank queue. Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases or openly displaying your deposit receipt book. It’s advisable to identify another branch nearby that you can visit to ensure that your banking pattern is not easily recognisable or detected. If the amount of cash you are regu-larly depositing is increasing as your business grows, consider using the services of a cash

Don't be victim of cash robberymanagement company. Refrain from giving wages to your contract or casual labourers in full view of the public rather make use of wage accounts that can be provided by your bank. Refrain from driving to the bank in your company branded vehicle on a typical ‘pay day’. Consider arranging for electronic transfers of wages to your contract or casual labourers’ personal bank accounts.

Tips for savings clubs and stokvels If you are a member of a cash savings

club, advise members of your club of the following:

Refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high risk days (e.g. Monday after month end). Ensure persons depositing club cash contributions or making withdrawals are accompanied by another club member.

A stokvel, savings club or burial society can arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s account instead of collecting cash contributions. Arrange for the club’s pay-out to be electronically transferred into each club member’s personal account or accounts of their choice.

LEPHALALE – Some of the workers sus-pended after an illegal strike earlier this year at Medupi were re-employed after agreeing to Eskom’s conditions.

During proceedings at Mogol Club some of the about 1 400 workers who were dis-missed were given the opportunity to resume their work at the Medupi plant.

A strict no-work-no-pay policy for the seven weeks of the strike was imposed and the members would also forfeit their annual bonuses.

According to Stephen Nhlapo, Numsa national sector coordinator, the three month long disciplinary process will delay the Me-dupi project with at least another year.

Meanwhile, history was made when

Medupi strikers employed againMedupi started pumping power last Sunday when the first unit of Medupi, unit six, was handed over to its operating division. Unit six will feed 794 megawatts (MW) of power into the national grid.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said that the hand-over would not mean the end of load shedding although it is expected to reduce the risk of load shedding.

Medupi takes national generation capac-ity from 42 800MW to 43 600MW. Five more units still have to be brought online, each generating 794MW.

Eskom plans to have all six units fully functional by 2019, reports . Once complete, Medupi will be one of the biggest coal power stations in the world.

LEPHALALE – During a community policing forum (CPF) meeting on Thursday, the new police station commander, Lt. Col. Daniel Ramokgoakgoa, asked that the community not take the law into their own hands.

He explained that every person has ba-sic rights and these are relevant even when people are arrested.

“A good arrest can easily be spoilt if com-munity members assault a suspect before he is detained.”

Lt. Col. Ramokgoakgoa explained that it is not always necessary to use force when

Don't take the law into own handsaffecting an arrest. In fact, it is preferred to not use violence at all if possible. “We are all guided by the law when dealing with suspects and it is clear that the absolute minimum force should be used to arrest a suspect.”

On the issue of bail, he added that when suspects are granted bail by the court, the matter is out of the police’s hands.

“Every person has the right to bail and the court will decide whether a person will be granted bail based on certain prescribed factors.”

Residents urged to be vigilant LEPHALALE – Good news for residents is that housebreaking statistics have de-creased from 2014 figures, however other crimes seem to be on the rise. This is ac-cording to a presentation by Const. Pre-cious Monyai from the Lephalale police at the community policing forum meeting last Thursday.

Const Monyai says that theft out of motor vehicles is becoming a major problem.

“We have seen an increase in this crime in especially Jan Lee Street and the Pick ‘n Pay area.”

The police also warned people that they should be vigilant when using ATM’s. The CPF chairperson, Thys Eloff, reminded resi-dents not to ask strangers for help when they are withdrawing money. “Most of the banks have officials with name tags near the ATM’s who are there to assist their clients.”

Murderer behind bars after one yearMAHWELERENG - Abel Maila (30) was sentenced to ten year in prison by the Mokerong Magistrates Court following a murder case.

Maila faces ten years behind bars after being found guilty for murdering Khotso Mathobela.

According to the police, Maila first tranquillised his own brother, George Maila, who was also the boyfriend of the victim at the time. After killing Mathobela on 27 August last year, Maila set his brother up by placing Mathobela’s dead body in bed with his drugged brother.

George Maila immediately called the police after regaining consciousness and realising his girlfriend was murdered.

Through the successful investigations by detective W/O John Mallela of Mahwelereng detective branch, the culprit was arrested.

LEPHALALE – During a recent CPF meeting some complaints were raised about the conduct of certain CPF members.

Lt Colonel Daniel Ramak-goakgoa, Lephalale SAPS station commander, said he is impressed with the CPF’s in-volvement in crime prevention, but that they should always act within the boundaries of the law. “I have heard of instances where speeding motorists will produce a blue light when pulled over by the police and claim that they are part of the CPF.”

“If we want the community to respect us we have to make certain that we obey the laws of the town and the country,” Ramak-goakgoa said.

According to CPF chairperson, Thys Eloff, every CPF member will be issued with an identification card with the member’s name and details on. “Any person who feels that a

good learning patterns. How the child is supposed to receive instruc-tion is the first important step. Pat-terns of learning will influ-ence the way a child handles instruction, correction, limitation, freedom, and new and growing re-lationships. This will influence how the child fits new knowledge into his life. When you train your child’s heart, you also train him or her in self-control. You are training the heart to have a right attitude towards life and living. Self-control is a foundational value. Self-control influences kindness, gentleness, speaking well, controlling negative emotions, concentrating, focusing and many other be-haviors. Self-control does not take place in our mind, it takes place in our heart.

Waiting until our child is five years old is too late to focus on training our child to sit still. Self-control can be taught at a young age, and is not something that children get to grow into when they are older.

Interesting recent research shows that a large percentage of school-aged children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD, and are taking prescribed medication. But in France, the percentage of kids diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is less than 5%. From the time their children are born, French parents provide them with a firm cadre—the word means “frame” or “structure.”

Children are not allowed, for example, to snack whenever they want. Mealtimes are at four specific times of the day. French children learn to wait patiently for meals, rather than eating snack foods whenever they feel like it. French babies, too, are expected to conform to limits set by parents and not by their cry-ing selves. Food for thought? 1[i]

If you have not trained your child’s heart, you urgently need to stop and re-assess. Confucius said: A man who has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it is committing another mistake. Could it be time to change the way we look at our parenting? Maybe we should ask ourselves… are we reaching our children’s hearts?

We can change our children’s future if we understand that parents who focus on their child’s heart will ultimately train the whole child for a successful life. The choice is ours!

The heart of the matter5

Learning curve

By Minda Marshall

I want to spend time on the heart of the matter – where do we start with ‘parent-ing’? People act on what they believe. What you believe will cause you to make cer-tain choices… and your choices influence your future. Make sure you love what you choose, because you are going to live your choices!

When we understand that we make our choices according to what we believe we will know that a person’s life mirrors his heart. What we say and do, as well as how we say and do it, reflects what is in our hearts. The same is true of our children. What children say and do is a reflection of what is in their hearts.

As parents we can easily become side-tracked by behavior, because we want to have a well behaved child. This is an impor-tant goal in parenting, but be careful of the pitfall… as long as the child does not shame us in front of our family and friends, or if they are good achievers in academics or on the sports field we think we have been suc-cessful in our parenting. Is this really true? As parents we need to realise that there is something in a child’s heart that parents need to reach. We can become so focused on raising a well behaved or ‘successful’ child that we forget where every action we make comes from! The first focus in early parenting should be the child’s heart and not simply their outward behavior. The human heart re-quires attention, and that should be the focus of parenting.

Some parents wait until ‘a child is old enough’ before actively working on the heart of their child. Don’t wait. As your child’s parent you are responsible for training your child’s heart, and even when you don’t be-lieve it, you will still be training their heart by the way you act and react to your world. As a parent you are the role-model, you are the one your child can see, and what we see shapes our heart in making choices for life.

A young child has no understanding of the reason for behavior, but even if a child does not understand why food should not be dropped from his high chair deliberately, it does not mean we hold back instruction. The reason for this is that adults believe be-fore they do, but with children the opposite is true – they do and then understand why or why not. If we want to teach our children well, we should insist on correct behaviour long before the child is capable of under-standing.

Children first learn how to act well and then they learn how to think well. Even be-fore the child can act or understand, they see; they see how we act, and what is im-portant to us. This is their first impressions of what they should and should not do.

To help our children grow up with an ac-curate heart we need to help them develop

“Nou vertel my.”“Ja,” sê Herman, “Eers is die vuurmaak-
