Let’s not do that again…Let’s not do that again…

Needed: a way to pre-qualify software products before consideration for operation in the NMCI environment

• Needed: clear direction to vendors

• What are the rules?

• How do we test NMCI compatibility?

• Needed: clear direction to FAMs

• What applications follow the rules?

Two Simple RulesTwo Simple Rules

• Software and hardware must operate correctly in the NMCI environment

• No conflicts with Gold Disk load (WIN2K)• Good neighbor with other applications

• Software and hardware must not create security vulnerabilities

• Comply with GPOs

• No prohibited ports/protocols

• Inbound anonymous FTP

• NETBIOS

• No active code

NMCI Product Evaluation Center (NPEC)NMCI Product Evaluation Center (NPEC)

• First stop for vendors

• Entry point for product consideration

• Single Navy point of contact for evaluating NMCI compatibility– Provide vendors opportunity to verify that

products work in the NMCI environment & not DOA because security issues

• Authoritative source for FAMS and claimants

NMCI Product Evaluation Center (NPEC)NMCI Product Evaluation Center (NPEC)

• DON activity – Access to NMCI architecture and performance

parameters for development– Publish standards and procedures for submitting

software for compatibility evaluation

• Fee for service– If found compatible, results posted on web site; report

delivered to vendor– If not found compatible, deliver report to vendor

What NPEC won’t doWhat NPEC won’t do

•Won’t tell FAMS what to do–Not testing for suitability–Not testing for effectiveness

•Won’t make acquisition choices

•Won’t dictate NMCI decisions

•Won’t provide certification–Follow-on step requires Navy customer

•Won’t provide accreditation

Way aheadWay ahead

•Targeted for IOC November 2003

•Process and procedures in development

•More information to follow on NMCI web site

•Key component of DON effort to be open to new products and technology from IT industry
