Ekaterina Panikanova was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 2009 she lives and works in Rome. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg. Her work has been exhibited in the Russian Union of Artists, at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Rome, Venice and New York.

“In a flea market I once found a 700-page manuscript and was struck by the difference between its original purpose and where it had ended up. I bought it and used it as the base for a painting. Paper, cards and books have

a fundamental value in my work. I see them as a body of rules, dogmas, traditions, religious beliefs and scientific discoveries that, right or wrong for their time, free human beings, yet simultaneously enclose them in a cage” says mrs Panikanova. “I like working on old books: I like the way the wear and tear, underlining’s, notes and scribbling’s enable me to perceive the personalities of the people who have read them. I suppose my Soviet past can be seen in the type of clothing and objects and symbols I depict. However I continuously strive to widen my areas of interest. Living in Italy I have been able to study

the ‘European way of life’. The books I use to make my paintings generally come from various different countries of origin in such a way that the stories I tell of the ‘education’ of mankind are true for all of us, regardless our culture and country of origin”

NLXL founders Rick and Esther Vintage first saw Ekaterina’s work in Z2O gallery in Rome, Italy. Struck by the power of the artwork they contacted the artist to invite her for a collaboration on a wallpaper collection.

Founded in 2000 by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel both graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven now based in Antwerp and Amsterdam. They redefine the applied arts for the contemporary age. Their collaboration has created highly expressive, mainly one-off or limited edition works, from the outset.

Opulent, intricate and ironic, Studio Job combine an extraordinarily high level of craftsmanship with extreme ornamentation. They reference both the traditional and the topical, the organic and the artificial. This narrative conveys

a tension between the good and the bad exploring all facets of each. The Studio Job iconography is at once heraldic and cartoonlike, expressive and yet somehow primitive. Their style is placed within an enigmatic, intellectual framework by the number and complexity of symbols and signifiers it conveys.

Studio Job’s work is widely collected both in the private and public sectors. Their designs have been shown in the important galleries, fairs and are added to more than 40 international museum collections. Although, by

definition, their work has primarily been geared towards collectors and museums, Studio Job have collaborated successfully with various likeminded brands eg. Bisazza, Bulgari, Land Rover, L’Oréal, Maharam, Moooi, Rizzoli, Swarovski, Venini and Viktor & Rolf. There have been solo exhibitions in eg. New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Milan, Geneva, Miami, Shanghai and Basel.

25BROOKLYN TINS WALLPAPER BY MERCIYear: 2012 - 8 designs, Roll 48,7 cm x 1000 cm (4,8 m2) Roll 19” x 29.5’ (51.6 SqFT)

MERCI opened in march 2009 in the arty neighborhood of Haut-Marais in Paris. More than just a retail project, it is a unique place, a destination store with 3 cafés and restaurants as well a very rich programme of exhibitions and scenographies that made the reputation of Merci. Jean-Luc Colonna d’Istria of MERCI: “In 2009, MERCI selected this vintage ceiling tins as a décor concept for the Parisien store. Since the opening, there is not one day whithout seing a visitor taking pictures of the MERCI tin counter or asking to buy it. This phenomenon has

given MERCI the idea to get together with NLXL to design and market the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins. Historically, tin ceillings were introduced to North America as an affordable alternative to the exquisite plaster work used in European homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were being mass-produced. Today the irregularity and the aging give all the appeal to this American architecture icon.” NLXL Founder Rick Vintage has a background in interior design. In 2005 he imported pressed tin plates for a restaurant project in the Netherlands.

“Ever since we installed these tins I knew we had to do something with this beautiful product. At one of the famous parties during the Paris Design Week in january 2012 Daniel Rozensztroch (photo), art director of MERCI asked us if we were interested to make a wallpaper collection based on vintage tins. Brooklyn Tins was born. I think the collection shows the pleasure we have had in working together on this project.”

SCRAPWOOD WALLPAPER BY PIET HEIN EEKYears: 2010/2013 - 16 designs, Roll 48,7 cm x 900 cm (4,4 m2) Roll 19” x 29.5’ (47 SqFT)

Piet Hein Eek developed a vision on recycling long before it came into fashion. “The scrapwood cupboard from 1990 was my reaction against the prevalent craving for flawlessness. I was walking around in a lumberyard and suddenly realized that old wood looked better than new.”In 2013, three years after the launch of the original Scrapwood Wallpaper collection NLXL introduced 8 new Scrapwood Wallpaper designs. The complete Scrapwood Collection comprises 16 designs.

Piet Hein Eek: “This new collection complements the previous one. For this first collection we just scanned some planks from my workshop and brought it to market. This time we aimed for a more conceptual approach. Working on this collection turned out to be much more interesting than the first time”.

Rick Vintage, NLXL Founder: The effect is astonishing, the quality is so high that you could fool anyone in to thinking it is real. People just love it. If it puts a smile on people’s faces

then you really have a great product.”

The Scrapwood Wallpaper has won the ICFF New York Editors Award in 2011. It has been featured in the New York Times, Daily News, Country Living, Shelterpop, Remodelista, Core77, Cup of Jo, DesignBoom, HypeBeast, Design*sponge, etc.

49CONCRETE WALLPAPER BY PIET BOONYear: 2012 - 7 designs, Roll 48,7 cm x 900 cm (4,4 m2) Roll 19” x 29.5’ (47 SqFT)

Piet Boon is world famous for the incredible sophistication in his designs. The robust yet elegant classic Piet Boon style combines natural materials with subdued colour palettes for an unrivaled look that is authentic in every way. His attention to detail and esthetics can be found in private homes, beach houses, retail stores, resorts, hotels, public spaces, the furniture label and numerous product designs all over the world. Piet Boon: “We were absolutely stunned when we first visited NLXL. The production methods, level of quality and the company’s unique expertise

and passion were a real eye opener. We are very proud of our Concrete Wallpaper. The result is amazing in every aspect. One really has to touch it to feel the difference with the real thing.Concrete with its sober, subdued character is one of my favorite materials. And now there is this fabulous wallpaper which lets one transform a space, be it a wall or ceilings easily and in a very affordable way. We also plan to use it for wainscoting panels and ceiling. Another huge advantage is that minor damages don’t show. They seemingly simply disappear naturally in the ‘structure’.”

Rick Vintage: “Piet Boon is one of our idols. We are absolutely thrilled to create a backdrop for his contemporary designs. The rough edge of concrete has always been present at his interiors, so our teams got together to create Concrete Wallpaper. You won’t believe your eyes, it is better than the real thing! It has been a wonderful experience to work with Piet and Karin Boon and their team.”

REMIXED. WALLPAPER BY ARTHUR SLENKYear: 2013 - 8 designs, Roll 48,7 cm x 900 cm (4,4 m2) Roll 19” x 29.5’ (47 SqFT)

Arthur Slenk (1941) found two boxes of handwritten music sheets over twenty years ago, used by an amateur orchestra between 1872 and 1941. The documents had not seen daylight for almost half a century. Carefully, he started examining page upon page, discovering the genesis, the varying pressure of pen upon paper, a cor rected error, a tiny ink stain where the pen had stumbled over a fibre, fingerprints, signs of wear in the corner where the sheet was flipped over – all these traces, suddenly revealing the obscure

members of this amateur orchestra.

The sheet music was sorted into seperate envelopes, by subject, then finally pasted. Each design was critically examinated, often followed by corrections. The artist worked on it every day. After seven years and 144 designs he considered this gigantic collage completed.

NLXL has selected 8 of these designs for a new wallpaper collection. The result is simply incredible. New state of the art

scan techniques have been developed to capture the depth of the paper clippings. The vintage feel of the yellowed paper combined with the history behind the sheet music makes it look like a historical document on a wall.

Arthur Slenk: “This work is my “magnus opus” - and I don’t just give it to anybody. The designers at NLXL treated my designs with the respect I had hoped for. I am truly amazed by the end result.”
