NEW SAKHELWE COMMUNITY HALL

DETAILED ENGINEERING DESIGN REPORT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report entails the detailed engineering design of the structural and civil engineering

services for the proposed new community hall at Sakhelwe in Dullstroom, Mpumalanga

province.

The purpose of this report is the final design of the structure and services for the following:

a) Design criteria and standards for the building structural elements

b) Design criteria and standards for the design of water supply and sewerage

c) Design criteria and standards for road/parking and storm water drainage to the proposed

health centre.

d) Connection to existing and proposed bulk services including the demand on those

services.

e) The layout, size and capacity of internal services and the construction methods and

materials.

Civil Engineering has focused on the provision of access to the facility, parking and storm

water handling, potable water connection and sewerage infrastructure.

Structural Engineering has focused on the selection and provision of suitably sized building

structural elements to ensure that the loads that are imposed on the building structure are

absorbed by the structural elements and safely transmitted to the ground through the

foundations. The approach has been adopted to, first uphold public safety in the design and

secondly to design economic and cost effective infrastructure.

SECTION 3: DESIGN

3.0 STRUTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN

The purpose of structural engineering is to design and so arrange the structural elements that all the

loads that are supported by or imposed on the structure are safely transmitted to competent

foundations and then to the ground.

3.1 Design Codes of Practice

Structural design has been carried out in accordance with the South African National Standards (SANS) as published by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). The following codes of practice have been used:

Table 3.1: Design Codes

Material/Element Code Description

Concrete SANS 10100 -1:

The Structural Use of Concrete, Part 1: Design

SANS 10100 – 2:

The Structural Use of Concrete, Part 2: Materials and Execution of Work.

3.2 Loading

The imposed gravity loading for the new community hall building are as follows:

Occupancy

Design Load

(KN/m²)

(a) Offices 3.0

(b) Common Areas* 5.0

(c) Roof 0.5

*Note that the building is a single storey structure. The loads on the floors are generally loads on the ground, which can also be classified as surcharge Lateral loading consists of wind loading for the design wind speeds associated with the

location of the building.

Wind Data: The fundamental value of the basic wind speed is 40m/s (10 min mean wind

speed) as defined in SANS 10160-3: 2011 shall be used.

Terrain Category: The applicable category is Terrain Category C (i.e. an open area without

regular cover of buildings)

Site altitude: For the Dullstroom/Mpumalanga Area the altitude above sea level is 2037 m

The area is not known to be prone to seismic activity. Accordingly no seismic loading been considered.

3.3 The New Community Hall Building

The design loads for the building is shown on the drawings in appendix A.

The proposed building has been designed as a structural steel framed structure comprising of

reinforced concrete footings, steel columns, and steel roof trusses.

Gravity loads will be taken by the steel trusses and transferred to the columns. These vertical

members will transmit the loads to the foundations and the foundations will take the loads into

the ground.

Lateral loads, in the form of wind loads will be taken in by the cladding and transferred to the

frame as horizontal loads.

The frame has been designed to carry any lateral loads.

3.4.1 Trusses The roof trusses comprise of steel trusses. The steel trusses consist of 1500mm deep parallel

truss with top chord, bottom chord and cross members. Generally the members are angle

sections.

The whole truss system is designed to deflect within allowable limits of deflection. Individual

SAKHELWE COMMUNITY HALL DETAILED DESIGN REPORT

members of the truss are designed to resist tensile and compressive forces accordingly.

Furthermore, the individual members are checked for slenderness adequacy, so that they do

not buckle under the applied loads.

Bracing members have been provided to provide lateral stability of the structure.

Sag rods have been provided to provide stability to the purlins by preventing twisting of such

members

3.4.2 Columns Columns have generally been designed as unbraced non-slender columns. The columns are

generally 254x146x23 I - sections. These columns are built within brickwork.

The columns are connected to the footings with a base plate and holding down bolts. Holding

down bolts will be cast within the concrete.

3.4.3 Walls

230mm brickwalls, as shown on the drawings will be built as facade. Most of this brickwork is non-load bearing brickwork. The brickwork for the external structures and the guard house are load-bearing brickwork. All 110mm thick brickwork is non-load bearing brickwork Expansion joints in brickwork to be provided at every third steel column 3.4.4 Foundations

From the geotechnical report, the area is not within dolomitic area. The specific area is

underlain with gravely soil with some few rock outcrops. The foundation recommended is Pad

footings for columns and strip footings for brickwalls. The minimum soil bearing capacity of

200 MPa has been specified.

3.5 Design Documentation

Design documentation consists of drawings and engineering calculations.

The drawings, contained in Appendix B, consists of the following:

a) Architectural Layouts

b) Setting out drawings

c) Concrete Layouts and details

d) Steel layouts and details.

The calculations of the structural elements have been included in Appendix C.
