By: Amira Bakir "On Saturday, January 8th of 2014, NJ HOSA held the 2013-2014 Northern Regional Leadership Conference at Passaic County Technical Institute. Our organization made history this year by maxing out our facilities capacities; with over 588 members in attendance, this year's NRLC has made the books as NJ HOSA's largest conference to date. This year's NRLC also pro-vided the opportunity to celebrate NJ HOSA's continuing growth and suc-cess, as 20 chapters attended this conference. I am most proud to commend NJ HOSA's membership on upholding its traditional courtesy and honor throughout the evening's program. One-hundred seventy-four medals were awarded across twenty-three competitive events! A huge congratulations to all our competitors, whom regardless of placing, each demonstrated the diligence, commitment, and drive through which they pursued their competitions. This conference's downtime activities featured both the inspiration and energy characteristic of NJ HOSA. Ms. Sandy Vicale from the Icla da Silva foundation joined us to share the touching story of a leukemia survivor who benefitted from match made through the organization, and informed the membership on ways to become involved with and contribute to the noble cause. As always, NJ HOSA members showed their utmost support of healthcare initiatives such as these, and a handful of students meeting eligibility criteria joined the national bone marrow donor registry soon after the presentation. And as always, our favorite downtime activities, "Question Game" and "Don't Forget the Lyrics," showcased the enthusiasm and creativity which inspire our organization to adapt with our membership's dynamic interests. On behalf of NJ HOSA, I would like to thank everyone who made this conference a tremendous suc-cess. A wholehearted thank you goes out to the warm hosts and wonderful courtesy corps team at PCTI, to the "shoe-maker's elves" at NJ HOSA headquarters, to our phenomenal judges, chapter advisors, and members who maintain the purpose of these conferences, and to the wonderful team I have the honor of working with, NJ HOSA's executive council. Best wishes to our continuing competitors at states! Looking forward to bringing together yet another unforgettable experience with such memorable personalities.

By: Sarah Mae Medalla The NJ HOSA Southern Regional Leadership Conference was held on Saturday, February 1st, 2014 at Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, New Jersey. Nervous members from all over southern New Jersey arrived, hoping to do their best in order to place in the top five. The top five winners in each event would then move on to compete at the State Leadership Confer-ence, and grow as future health professionals. The day started as over three hundred members entered the building. HOSA members en-joyed breakfast and lunch provided by the GCIT culinary department. In the afternoon, as they be-gan to finish their competitions, members had the opportunity to enjoy many of our different speakers. During lunch, an informative “How to Run a Successful State Officer Campaign” lecture was held by NJ HOSA Vice President Aditya Vinjamuri and Region III Vice President Sunakshi Puri. A greeting from National HOSA was also given by Sunakshi Puri, Region III Vice President. Our lovely guest speaker, Ms. Sandy Vicale, is a Donor Recruitment Specialist for The Icla da Silva Foundation – A Recruitment Center for the Be The Match Registry. Her presentation touched the hearts of the membership. To open up her presentation, she asked the simple ques-tion of, “If you could save someone’s life, would you do it?” A sea of hands went up because, as fu-ture health professionals, we dedicate our lives to help and serve others to the best of our ability. The informative presentation ended with the opportunity for students to sign up to become a bone marrow donor themselves, or to offer their services at any local bone marrow drives. The day concluded with anxious students waiting to hear if their name would be called

during the awards ceremony. February 1st was filled with nerves, friendship, spirit, and commit-

ment for a better future, and it all starts right now.

Page 12: NJ HOSA Winter Newsletter

By: Piyush Puri This year National HOSA unveiled the theme, The Future Starts Now, but what exactly does that mean for a future health professional, for you? Medicine is as exciting as it has ever been right now – every day carries the potential to radically transform healthcare. Today, students are combining their interests, crafting resumes full of interdisciplinary education and eclectic experiences. Thus, creating dynamic skill-sets and unique perspectives to tackle pressing problems. Josh Nesbit, founder of Medic Mobile, epitomizes these trailblazers. An aspiring physician at Stanford University, Nesbit was volunteering abroad at a hospital in Malawi, a country in southeast Africa – an experience that changed his life, and the lives of countless indi-viduals around the world. In that hospital in rural Malawi, there was one doctor. 1 doctor for 250,000 people. In an attempt to compensate for this cripplingly understaffed hospital, a network of Community Health Workers was estab-lished. These workers were members of villages that would serve as liaisons between the hospital and the distant villages. Nesbit ran into Dixon, a Community Health Worker who would walk 35 miles every week to deliver updates about his patients and community. Looking down at his phone, Nesbit saw that he had 6 bars – better coverage than he did back home, and Medic Mobile was born. By tapping into the established network of passionate Community Health Workers and cell phone service, Josh Nesbit realized he could transform the coordination and distribution of basic healthcare services. According to Medic Mobile, in 10 countries, 1 of 4 kids won’t make it to age 5 and 1 million kids still die the day that they are born but 95% of the human population is covered by cell phone signal. By equipping Community Health Workers with tools, such as cell phones with modified SIM cards to allow for text-messaging networks, Medic Mobile is working to enact sustainable change by bridging the communication gap between rural villagers and medical profes-sionals. Communities can now track infectious disease outbreaks 4 times cheaper and 134 times faster than before – and this is just the beginning. Serving NJ HOSA, I have had the opportunity to interact with amazing HOSA members who have the potential to become trailblazers in medicine. I encourage you all to follow your craziest dreams, think out-side of the box and harness the power of your determination. Each of us can make a difference, and the Fu-ture Starts Now – so what are we waiting for?

By: Akshar Patel Outside her door, there was a sign. A strange sign, one I saw until that very moment. I paused for a second, glanced at it, and then hastily entered the room because I was already late for class. When I entered, I saw a different rendering of the sign in all four corners of the room. Little did I know then, I had just entered Ms. Larsen’s HOSA Zone for the first time. It would be the first of many visits to her room, each of which increases my love for HOSA more and more. In Ms. Larsen’s room, I participate in a gamut of activities such as attending meetings to studying for competitions. My love for this organization has blossomed from a seed to a fully grown flower over the last three years. As a sophomore, I attended the 2013 State Leadership Conference. Being surrounded by the wonderful membership enlightened me that HOSA HOSA does not just preach character and leadership, but instills these virtuous traits in its active members. After the conference, I resolved to further imbibe these virtues into my life as I progressed in my HOSA journey. An entire year has passed since the SLC. However, with each passing day, HOSA Has become a bigger part of my life. HOSA developed me from a naïve freshman to the mature junior I am today. With the continued support of my HOSA advisor, Ms. Larsen, I was able to develop the high levels of character and leadership that I found in the membership at SLC. Nowadays, I spend most of my free time working on tasks ranging from planning AAHS HOSA’s first 5K Run/Walk to preparing teams for States. But I do not perform these tasks because they are my responsibility, however, because I enjoy seeing HOSA prosper before my eyes. HOSA is able to benefit people in many ways whether it be grooming their leadership qualities or apply the skills taught in the classroom to the outside world. I am proud to say HOSA helps me in this regard. To me, HOSA is not just a club, but a lifestyle.

Medicine defines teamwork, collaboration, and unity. Similarly, HOSA members

work as a team to give back to the community. Several chapters across New Jersey have

been working together to put together enjoyable social events, and collaborate to prepare

fundraisers. Hudson County Schools of Technology: County Prep High School has worked

dedicatedly along those lines too. They have held fundraisers during each holiday season.

These fundraisers have varied amazingly with creativity and unique ideas from all four

corners. They have also hosted and helped the blood drive at their school. Being able to

put up something for a good cause, and working hand in hand with the on-hand nurses

and technicians is a remarkable experience.

We could not be more proud of all local chapters across the state! It is a pleasure to watch

members grow as future health professionals. Keep up the good work, County Prep!

Hello ladies and gentlemen of NJ HOSA. This is your 2013-2014 Member-At-Large, Saverio Zipeto. I would like to introduce you to a brand new segment of the NJ HOSA Pulse, the “Member-At-Large Mail”.

We, as your Executive Council, believe that the members of NJ HOSA should have every opportunity which can be given to them to create their own success, and to insure the success of their chap-ters.

This section will also be used to help keep the membership well versed in the decisions of the Executive Council and their ac-tivities. In addition, this segment will showcase the extraordinary actions of NJ HOSA’s outstanding members.

*If you would like to nominate someone to be featured in a showcase, or you feel that you have information about an exciting opportunity for the members of NJ HOSA, I ask that you send an email to [email protected] the words “Member-At-Large Mail” in the subject line. In the body please include as much information about the person or activity as you feel pertinent.*

This inaugural issuing of the “Member-At-Large Mail” will be all about fundraising. The linked PDF has pages of useful fund-raising ideas. The link can be found at the bottom, left corner of the page, in the electronic version.

It is important to fundraise for multiple reasons. The big-gest of those reasons is the fact that it costs money to send those who qualify to go, to the HOSA National Leadership Conference,. Fundraising can help to offset the cost to the individual. That may be several months away, but, remember, those who prepare early, af-ford themselves the opportunity to fail and then succeed. (Just know that it is never too early to begin to fundraise.)

Another purpose of fundraising is to give back to your local chapter, or a charity whose mission the chapter agrees with. This can be the more rewarding of the two main reasons to fundraise, as it can touch more members. (Not all chapter members will make it to nationals, but, by virtue of fact, all members of the chapter which bought the materials for the school or gave the money to the charity, are members of the chapter.)

As a final note, I hope you all enjoy this new section, and give thought to early fundraising.

Best of luck in all that you do,

Saverio Zipeto, State Member-At-Large
