Digital Radiography in Statoil
CR/DR Standards: CEN committees CEN/TC
138/WG 1 & CEN/TC 121/SC 5/WG 1
• Recent progress from published HOIS CR RP towards standards
• Considered briefly at May CEN meeting.
• Further AFNOR/French comments recently received on part 1 (tangential
technique).
• To be incorporate by end of Nov at latest
• Should then lead to the "CEN Enquiry" stage
–Will get prEN numbers
–Issued for public comment throughout EU (3 languages)
• Next CEN meeting may be late May/early June 2012
Classification: Internal 2011-09-05
Current position on prEN ISO 17636-1 & -2
• Issued for public comment in autumn 2010
• Large number of comments (hundreds) received – more on Part 2
• Considered by May 2011 CEN committee meeting
–Time issues
• Final draft circulated to CEN committee members in September
• Due to time schedule imposed by AFNOR, no time for final version of these
standards to be discussed again by CEN committees TC121/SC5/WG1 &
TC138/WG1
• Versions now being prepared for final adoption vote
• If a positive vote, these standards will then be adopted in near future

X-ray inspections are used in connection with:
• On-site weld inspections of modifications
• In-service inspections for detection of corrosion damages
Major goals with dig. X-ray are:
• Increase quality in the process
• Remove the use of chemicals
• Remove offshore darkrooms
• Make it possible to centralize
expert review and examination

The Project scope: • To develop a unified process for enabling, capturing, QC, storing, sharing, examination
and reporting of images from radiographic inspections within Statoil.
This includes:
- Settle for a Statoil recommendation for HW and SW for use in digital radiography.
Only BAM certified equipment will be acquired.
- Establish a global storage for the image files (which is covered by corporate
backup/restore procedures)
- Negotiate an agreement for the equipment (HW & SW).
- Place access to Digital Radiography under AccessIT
- Establish and develop guidelines and training documentation for the process
• To test and run a pilot which follows this new unified process on one onshore and one
offshore facility
Note:
The project will not provide the plants with the needed equipment, but the unified
process which describes what to use and how to do it when it comes to handling
of digital radiography. Access to the SW and HW is ordered from GBS.

Components in the solution:
• Hardware: Scanners HR and SK, image plates, cassettes, envelopes,
cameras, high definition monitors, barcode readers…
• Software: DynaView Software for controlling the scanners, images viewing
and analysing of the x-ray images (in DICOM file format)
• Image storage on Statoil file servers to assure standard backup routines etc.
• See next page for a overview of an inspector field package – Toolkit setup.

Amount and type of data
• The number of X-ray images taken today at Statoil’s 46 plants is ~50000 /year
• Each image varies in size, but a full plate image can be >150Mb.
Note: Only lossless compression can be used. We can not allow to lose a crack in
a weld due to the compression method of the image!
• A XML files containing the thickness measurements will be exported to SAP for
storing as Measuring point documents.
• The PDF reports from the studies will be stored in SAP as documents linked to
the inspected equipment. Number of reports will be < 50000 /year because it is
common with multiple images in each report.

Important requirements from Statoil in the
RFP:1
• Adequate hardware (scanners) and software (BAM certified)
• New data structure.
–The structure must be able to cover work orders which can containing multiple inspections of several components (functional locations/equipment's)
–It must be possible to describe (by text and photo) how each x-ray image was captured
–It must be possible to predefine sets of setups. A setup will describe and guide the field engineer in the process of acquiring the image and making sure that all needed data is stored from the field work.
Important requirements from Statoil in the
RFP:2
• Have built in functionality to assure quality in the image capturing process e.g.:
–In accordance with ISO/DIS 17636- 2 Non-destructive testing of welds.
–In accordance with Recommended Practice for the in-service inspection of wall
loss in pipes by computed radiography (CR) HOIS(06)R3 Issue 3
• Give warning if the setup is done in a way that will give unacceptable geometrical unsharpness
• Unacceptable S/N ratio
• Coverage of weld or area
• Image quality indicator
11/14/2011
Important requirements from Statoil in the
RFP:3
• Network based file and data storage
–The images files must be stored on a fileserver
–All data about the acquiring process must be stored in real database tools. Eg. MS-SQL, Oracle, …
• Reporting and export tool:
–Possible to produce a complete report for each work order just handled (doc or pdf)
–Possible to produce lists containing the measurements points taken on the images (XML or XLS)
• Import tool:
–There must be a possibility to import work order data from SAP to the CR application (XML, Web services)
