Welcome
Welcome to the NITTTR Library. The primary goal of the library staff is to
provide the best possible service to the students and faculty of the institute
and others using the library. We encourage you to ask for assistance or
information from any library employee to help us achieve that goal. We also
ask that you make suggestions that will assist us in improving our services or
collection
The Library Guide is intended to serve as an introduction to the NITTTR
Library. It offers brief descriptions of the services, resources, and facilities of
the library. Finally, the Guide recites some of the rules of library conduct,
which users are asked to observe to maintain an atmosphere conducive to
study and research. Additional information about the library can be found at
www.nitttrchd.ac.in
Even in the ever-expanding world of online information, the NITTTR library
remains the laboratory of the faculty, students and researchers. The Library
provides the members with an impressive array of resources and in many
formats to meet their needs. More than 50,000 volumes form the core of
collection. In addition, the library provides access to a variety of science and
engineering related online journals to enhance research capabilities. Library
patrons can use these many resources to pursue their academic goals and
research. Particular emphasis has been placed on collecting materials that
support the major programs of NITTTR, Chandigarh.
We hope that your time spent in the NITTTR Library is productive,
informative, and rewarding Please let us know if there are ways in which we

Access Policy Persons Admitted Access to the NITTTRLibrary is exclusively reserved for the following
persons:
• Library patrons, including faculty, students both regular and modular,
alumni, and staff of the institute and special members.
• Current students and faculty collaborating institutions.
During reading and exam periods, access is limited to students, faculty and
staff.
Identification Required The following types of identification are required to access the NITTTR
Library:
• The institute faculty, students, and staff should present a Library
membership card. The students without membership card must obtain a
temporary pass from the Circulation Desk to enter the library
• Thealumni must present a NITTTRAlumni Association card and photo
identification for admission.Alumni identification cards are non-
transferable and admit the alumnus only
• Upon showing a current and valid photo identification card from
collaboratinginstitution, students and faculty may gain admission to the
library to conduct research for academic purposes

NITTTR Library Rules Please help us maintain an atmosphere conducive to study and research by
complying with the following rules:
• All library materials must be checked out at the Circulation Desk before
being removed from the library.
• Theft of library materials is a crime that will be prosecuted by the institute
Any mutilation of materials, including marking, tearing, underlining, and
highlighting are also criminal offenses that will be prosecuted
• To minimize damage to library collections, furniture, and equipment and to
maintain a clean environment for study, food is not permitted in the library.
• Smoking is prohibited in the library
• A current identification card or Library membership card must be
presented to the door monitor/attendant upon each entry to the library.
Non-member patrons must present the appropriate identification as
requested by the door monitor, who will refer them to the Circulation Desk.
For security purposes, and for purposes of preserving resources for those
patrons entitled to use the library, the rules governing access are strictly
enforced. Noncompliance will result in a denial of access.
• Library materials left on tables will be re-shelved
• Notebooks and other portable computers may be used in all areas of the
library
• Library staff phones are not available for public use.
• Talking on cell phones is not permitted in the reading room/areas. Cell
phones may be used in other areas of the library; in those areas, however,
patrons are requested to show consideration for others who may be
studying or conducting research in surrounding areas
• No entry to the library is permitted when the library is closed
• Patrons are required to leave the library premises at the close of business,
during fire alarms and other emergency procedures, or when otherwise
requested by library staff. The Institute security will be summoned if
patrons fail to comply
• Emergency exit may not be used except in the event of an emergency
Circulation General The NITTTR Library has special collection of engineering and technology,
sciences, education and management-related materials to be used within the
library and borrowed. Certain categories materials do not circulate.
Reference materials that do not circulate include encyclopedias, dictionaries,
statutes, handbooks, yearbooks. Other materials that do not circulate outside
the library include periodical volumes, parts of multi-volume treatises.
Library materials circulate via an online circulation system All library patrons
must be registered with the NITTTR Library in order to check out items from
the collection. Registration forms and circulation guidelines are available at
the Circulation Desk. Students with overdue materials may be blocked from
registering for the next semester or payment for lost or damaged items. It is
not advisable for a student to lend a issued item to others since the person to
whom the item is checked out remains ultimately responsible for the item until
it is returned. After an item has been checked out for 14 days, it is eligible for
recall by another patron. Items needed for reserve may be recalled
immediately. Failure to return recalled items in a timely manner may result in
suspension of library privileges
The library’s online catalog, LIBERTY, is available at www.nitttrchd.ac.in
LIBERTY may be used to search the collection, locate an item, or determine
the status of an item. If an item is not on the shelf, and LIBERTY does not
indicate that the item is checked out, please inquire at the Reference Desk
for assistance. Such items may be out on loan, on reserve, or recorded as
missing and reordered. Hold requests may be placed on materials out on

loan and searches arranged for missing.Unless a hold has been placed on an
item or the item is overdue.

Please contact the circulation supervisor at 571 with any questions
regarding circulation.
Reserve Materials are placed on Reserve for two reasons: (1) Faculty ask to place
certain materials on Reserve to assure their availability to all students in a
given course; (2) Certain heavily used materials are placed on Reserve,
again, to assure availability. Such materials include current editions of books,
rare books.
To borrow materials from reserve, patrons must be registered in the library’s
circulation system.In general, reserve books may be checked out for two
hours. They may be renewed for an additional two hours unless there is a
demand for them.
Two hours before closing, some reserve items may be checked out for
overnight use. These items must be returned to the Circulation Desk within
an hour of the library’s opening the next day. Restrictions on overnight
checkout may apply to some titles.
Instructional Technology The Instructional Technology learning materials is located at the Circulation
desk.The learning materials consist of CD-ROM DVD and other
instructional technology support services to students, faculty, and staff. For
in-class presentations, the CD-ROMs and DVDs in the library’s collection
may be issued at the Circulation Desk. CD-ROM and DVD viewing stations
are located in the e-library.
Computing Services The NITTTR Library features computer workstations provided for the use of
all library patrons. All library patrons may use the public NITTTR OPAC
terminals located near the catalogue of the library. OPAC can be accessed
from anywhere over the Internet.
A limited number of computer workstations dedicated for student use are
available in thee-library.
Use of notebooks or other personal computers is permitted in all areas.
Access to the Internet is available to students via the NITTTR wireless
network. More information is available from the Computer Science
department.

Special Collection Special Collectionincludes a collectionof dissertations/theses submitted by
the ME and PhD scholars enrolled in the institute.

Photocopier The photocopier is located in the library. Request for the photocopy is to be
made to the operator.The hours of operation are Monday–Friday, 3:00pm–
4:00pm. The photocopying section accepts copy requests from students,
faculty, and staff. Please note that the section is unable to reproduce material
when doing so violates copyright law. Only limited pages are to be
photocopied.
Copyright Notice The copyright law of India. The Copyright(Amendment)Act 2012 governs the
making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. The
person making the request for photocopying is responsible for any
infringement.
Reference and Research Services Librarians offer reference assistance and research consultations primarily to
NITTTR faculty, students, and alumni. Assistance may be requested:
• by appointment;
• at the Reference Desk located in the library;
• by phone at extension number587;
• by email at [email protected];
Library staff is available to conduct instructional sessions on technical
education research for student, faculty, and other groups. Other services
provided by the reference librarian includes library orientations and
instruction on the use of LIBERTY, the Internet, and other online resources.
The library provides access to many online resources through computers
located in the e-library and through other on-site computers, or remotely
through the IP connectivity.
ONLINE e-Resources The library provides online access to the following e-
resources and databases through Inflibnet Consortia. WORLDCAT DISCOVERY is an online catalog that can be used to locate
books and other materials at more than 60,000 libraries.
Interlibrary Loan Books and periodicals that the NITTTR Library does not own may be
borrowed through interlibrary loan (ILL), a service offered to students, faculty,
and staff. Search in INDCat, an online union catalogue catalog of Inflibnet, to
locate materials in libraries in India; once the record for the work is located,
submit a request to the library for procuring the books on IIL.
OPAC, The Online Catalog WebOPAC, the online catalog of the NITTTR Library, provides bibliographic
information about materials found in the Library collection, their locations and
availability.
LIBERTY Web OPAC can be accessed via dedicated terminals located in the
library near the physical catalogue. It can be accessed from anywhere over
the Internet.
WebOPAC utilizes a single search box. Searchers may enter an exact title or
descriptive keywords Results may be refined by format, collection, location,
language, topic, or publication.
It can also be searched by keyword, title, author, subject, or call number, bar
code, accession number and so on.Onscreen instructions make WebOPAC
easy to use.

At the Reference Desk, librarian is available to guide students in using print
or electronic resources. Computers in the e-library provide quick access to
online databases and the Internet Print editions of general reference
materials, including directories, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks etc.,
are shelved in the Reference section.
We welcome suggestions, recommendations, and comments about the
Library Students are also encouraged to recommend books considered to be
useful additions to the library’s collection Suggestions and recommended
acquisitions may be submitted to the Chief Librarian or by placing a
suggestion card in the suggestion box near the entrance.
The general collection stacks follow the reference collection; theses
collection and bound periodicals collections. The collections are arranged
according to DDC.
The Library occupies is located in the first floor of the JCBOSE building. It
houses: Circulation area, Reference, Reading Room, stacks areas,
pamphlets, and current, unbound periodicals; OPAC and physical catalogue
Library administrative Office, Technical Services staff offices; photocopier; e-
library with reading room; classroom for short term training programs
participants in library and information science.
Stack Level—The treatise collection, call numbers 000-999. These books
are arranged according to the classification system of the Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) scheme.
HAPPY READING
Library Security There is oneentrance to the NITTTR Library.A door monitor attends the main
entrance during all times when the building is open Monday–Friday, 9:00am–
11:00pm; Saturday, 10:00am–11:00pm; & Sunday, 2:00–11:00pm. This
entrance may be used only by persons with a current Library membership
card. Door monitors at the entrances may ask to check the identification of all
persons entering the NITTTR Library. In addition to the security gates, Library
has installed surveillance cameras at the entrance. Patrons are advised to
keep their personal belongings with them at all times while in the Library Any
unusual or suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the
Circulation Desk.
Fire Alarms When the fire alarm sounds, Library users must immediately evacuate the
building through the nearest exit.
Lost and Found Inquiries about lost possessions may be made at the Circulation Desk at
0712-2759571.
Messages The Library can neither accept phone messages for library patrons.
Recent Acquisitions Lists of new materials acquired by the library are available in the library or at
library OPAC page.
