lynchpin of the 70s and 80s,

and arguably one of the

greatest opening batsmen of

all time, and certainly one of

the most successful. He held the record of 34 Test

centuries for almost two decades before it

was broken by Sachin Tendulkar in December

2005. He earned respect for Indian cricket

and he taught his team-mates the virtue of

professionalism. Since retiring, Gavaskar has

served as a television commentator, analyst

and columnist, as well as taken on various

responsibilities with the BCCI, and served as

chairman of the ICC cricket committee.

captain, and current cricket

commentator. He was a

genuine all-rounder with 14

centuries and 383 wickets in

Test cricket, and remains well-known by his

nickname "Beefy". He is generally regarded as

being England's greatest ever all-rounder,

particularly in Test cricket and still holds the

record for the highest number of wickets taken by

an England bowler. His award of a knighthood was

ostensibly in recognition of his services to charity.

Botham was also a talented footballer, and made

11 appearances in the Football League. On 8

August 2009, Botham was inducted into the ICC

Cricket Hall of Fame.
