From the Editor

Hi all,

Who would have thought it's been over 3 years since I started doing the magazine. How time fly's.

It's been a great privilege producing the magazine for the club (mistakes and all) and I am also proud of myself for learning many new things to get this important club role completed.

I would also like to thank everyone that helped me long the way. With your support it has made the role easier.

Now it's time for some new blood to inject new ideas into this great magazine we have.

CheersHeath Glass. Nissan 4x4 Club of Victoria Editor

The Club wish to sincerely thank the NOBLE PARK FOOTBALL CLUB for the use of their club rooms for committee meetings.

Trip Report Limestone Coast

Report By: Maddy Kris - Part 1

Day – 1: Welcoming, ice-breaking and arrival: ~ 460km

Most of us gathered and started our convoy from 7 Eleven Ardeer North. Oscar joined the convoy in Hamilton where we had lunch. Excitedly drove, stopped in Mount Gambier information centre and reached our first campsite “Cape Banks Campground by the Canunda National Park” just before it got dark.

Secluded campsite just on the foot of Cape bank Lighthouse and continuous soothing beach sound provided further more rhythm to our ears. Total of 6 campgrounds were pre-booked out of which we used 5. All prepared to open our tent, roof top and swag. Jorgen wanted to check where the entry point to the park was and went exploring after making camp. He came back 2 hours later with lot of sweat and gasping breath. Later, came to know that he got bogged and recovered himself with maxtrax and shovel. An ominous start to the trip! No campfire permitted as Parks South Australia does not permit that until start of May across most of their parks in this region, however we had a great chat and discussed about next day’s programme.

Day - 2: Excitement, thrilling and learning ~70 km

Took some drone shots of early stunning and vibrant sunrise with Cape bank lighthouse. Tyre pressure was down to 18 psi and others to 16 psi. Started by 9:30 and we all headed towards fun-filled Canunda beach drive.

Canunda National park (40 km) is the second largest coastal park in south east of South Australia stretching along limestone coast between sea and Lake Bonney. Park offers spectacular view on its shore and over the dunes. We are lucky that weather was on our side where the blue sky with tiny clouds added more depth to scene.

We all were playing with different gears in 4H drive and bit anxious and thrilled with soft sand. Great successful attempt to drive up to one of the high dunes in Canunda and bit of challenge to take 3 point turn on top to drive down. On top of dune, we a beautiful 360-degree unobstructed view of windmills, sand dunes, sea and the shore waited. Stopped for lunch in random shore spot “Number two rocks” in Canunda

2 of us got bogged on the first day and recovered the vehicles followed by great team work with shovel, maxtrax and snatch strap. Surprised and thrilled to look at upside down abandoned Ford Discovery on the shore with recovery ropes.

Challenging drive on the soft sand and successfully crossed complete stretch (40kms) of Canunda National Park beach drive from Cape bank lighthouse to Southend and further extended our drive to inland from Southend to Beachport (29 km). Noticed crowded and fully packed caravan park in Beachport and we were glad we were not going to be cramped in there.

Reached 2nd pre-booked campsite “3 Mile Bend Campground” in Beachport conservation park just outside Beachport and, though booked 6

NISSAN NEWS AUGUST 2019 11 www.nissan4x4vic.com.au

campsites which were widely spread out, so Ray came up with the great idea to use one of the bigger campsites. No campfire on the second day too.

Campsite: Total of 7 campsites nestled under paper bark tea-trees near the shore of Lake George, offering good shade and wind protection. Drizzled at night and distinctive birds sound through the night made us to feel and sense the nature and its life.

Day - 3: Fun-filled bumpy ride ~160kms

Packed and started by 9:45 after breakfast in campsite. We did not explore around campground as we are prepared for another long drive through the beach and inland. After few kilometres out of Beachport, exited from bitumen to a fun-filled beach drive. Hugged the coast wherever we could and made it through to Nora Creina, which is a quaint little seaside village. Traversed the little dip conservation park and reached Robe where we topped up fuel, stocked up on supplies and beverages to get ready for tonight’s campfire – which we were determined to have regardless (naughty!).

Followed by last night rain, shore seems bit harder and compact which made it easy to drive along with lot more stability and control. However, it was much fun with bumpy rides across dunes. Most of our cars started to get stripes on the sides when we went through bush (battle scars!!). Plenty of time to capture some pics through our lens.

Noticeable increase in confidence amongst all parties in the group and started to enjoy the ride. Crossed through Kingston and surprised to see the big lobster on the roadside – photo time!. Based on Oscar’s recommendation, searched for Cray fish restaurant, however we couldn’t find any.

None of us got bogged today and Oscar tried his level best to voluntarily to get bogged where he couldn’t succeed. Reached campsite in the dark and this time we all camped in one big campsite and best part is today’s campfire and the obligatory discussions on the day’s events and escapades!

Campsite: “28-mile crossing” in southern end of Coorong National park. All the campsites

were levelled grass ground. Bright Full Moon complemented and pleasantly lightened our campsite.

Started to warm up with campfire and beverages. Few of our photographers tried to capture moon and milky way. Great discussion about today’s bumpy ride and upcoming Coorong national park drive which could further challenge our fun.

Part 2 of report in next edition........

GVM UPGRADES for

Y61 Patrol GU and Land Cruiser 200 Series

Engineer Certified

South Belgrave (03) 9754 2751 [email protected] www.atocauto.com.au

Call us now and discuss how our GVM upgrade

can work for you.(03) 9754 2751

What is GVM ?

GVM (gross vehicle mass) is the factory and legal maximum weight of the vehicle when loaded with people and cargo. Fitting accessories such as bull bars, winches, rear bars, roof racks and storage systems etc, can quickly use up the available payload allowance before the car is filled with passengers, food, camping equipment or tow ball weight.

Why do a GVM upgrade?

A GVM upgrade should be done for safety and legal reasons to protect yourself from traffic infringements, to maintain insurance cover, but most of all to maintain a safe and stable vehicle while touring.

ATOC

ATOC has over 30 years experience in the 4WD industry, servicing, repairs, accessories and modifications. As with all our work, we have selected the very best products from industry leading manufacturers to give you the best reliability and long service life, for this reason our GVM upgrade kits use KONI shock absorbers and King Springs. Do the job once and do it right. We are continually adding other vehicle models to our GVM upgrade range.

So please give us a call or drop in to discuss your car’s specific GVM requirements. We look forward to your call to see what we can do for you.

All trips MUST be accepted by the Trip Coordinator before being advertised in the Club Magazine or forum. Send an email to the Trip Coordinator which details your trip.

Once the Trip Coordinator has approved the trip it is posted in the Trips section of the Club Forum. Once posted on the Club Forum, please ensure that you keep the trip entry up to date with attendees and review it regularly for comments or questions from members.

To comply with our insurance requirements it is essential to complete the required paperwork. Members can use the online digital trip participant form to quickly and easily submit the required details. Alternatively a printable version of the form can be downloaded from the club website (http://www.nissan4x4vic.com.au) or Four Wheel Drive Vic. website (http://www.fwdvictoria.org.au).

All other forms for trip leaders and guests can be downloaded from the club website (http://www.nissan4x4vic.com.au) or FWDV website (http://www.fwdvictoria.org.au).

If you have any ideas about a trip and/or questions speak with the Trip Coordinator ([email protected]) or any of the committee members.

I have recently had members ask me how to write a trip report. As trip reports are a fundamental part of the magazine, it’s great when members want to share their interesting experiences with the club community.

The general rule of thumb when submitting a report is to provide as much relevant infvormation as possible. For example:

When I receive your details I will create a proof of your report and send it to you for changes or approval.

When you write your report, do it from your perspective, how you experienced the trip from start to finish. I find it helpful to look at the map or GPS file as well as photos to jog those memories.

When I receive your draft I will create a proof and send it to back to you to make changes if necessary.

Hope this helps to get those reports in.

Cheers. Heath.

Addendum 1

The Presidents Report: It is my duty as the president of the club to present an end of year report of the committee for the 2017-2018 Financial year.

Before I begin with this, I would just like to take a moment to reflect on the sad passing of one of our members Andrew J Rodrick. Andrew passed away on 25/7/18 after a long battle with kidney and liver disease. Andrew has been a member of the club since 05/10/09 and as member number 100 he demonstrated this by giving 100%. Andrew has been presented with the Club man award in both 2012 and 2013 and with the President’s award in 2014 and has been a staunch supporter of our store point track maintenance work and our photography competition. I am sure we all hold memories of Andrew close to our hearts and he will be remembered in the club.

Andrews’s family are holding a thanksgiving service at 1:30 on 3 August at the Mt Evelyn Christian Reformed Church in Birmingham Rd Mt Evelyn. Anyone from the club who would like to attend would be most welcome.

***********************************************************

I have held the role of President of the Nissan Club with pride over my period and I am pleased to provide you with information about the great activities that have occurred.

Over the past year we have called our attention to several areas of the business plans that we have had endorsed over previous years and have been able to see some of these activities completed.

Over the past year we have not been able to fill all of our committee positions and in some circumstances have had a single membership filling a number of positions. This is not a positive way to ensure that the committee is able to best meet the needs of the membership. However, we have tried our best to make certain that key roles are filled to ensure that member access to the club is maintained in the most appropriate way.

In this instance I would like to personally thank all of those members of the 2017-2018 committee for your work and support of the club. Without these members taking on these roles, we would not have been able to undertake the key activities

Social Events and Trips

Over the past year we have held a total of 48 trips and events with over 330 people participating in these.

These have included day trips of varying locations, activities and skill requirements.

o Weekend Trips where members have been able to have a base at Wandarrah and participate in short drives from the property.

o Weekend trips that have seen us travel to locations that were opened again for use such as haunted stream

o And longer trips where members have the capacity to travel to other states to see the wonderful tracks we have open to us.

o All of our volunteer work has totalled 88 hours with 1820 km’s travelled using $395 worth of fuel,

Our Social events held over the past 12 months have included Xmas in July, our awards day bbq and presentations which sees the awards go out to our outstanding club man, club women and our most outstanding new member, our annual Xmas event which sees Santa’s attendance, Puffing Billy and the support that we receive each and every general meeting for the provision of supper for the members and guests.

Driver Training.

Over the past year we have held a total of 6 Driver training weekends along with a trip leader course. During this time we have had a total of 66 members including both new associate and full members attending the courses to improvement their skills, knowledge and confidence.

Wandarrah

Over the past year we have held 4 full working bees and 2 mini working bees prior to a Wandarrah weekend social event. It is at these times where members provide support, time and energy to ensure that we are able to get all of those activities completed that make sure we keep Wandarrah in a state that is as usable as possible for our membership.

Of note during this period have been the activities to maintain our tracks within the property for the use of the members, the support of the driver trainer tracks to ensure that we can provide a good driver training experience, we have repaired those areas of the property that have been identified as requiring attention such as our cooking area table, the children’s playground and our campsite areas.

We continue to be cognisant of the water storage and usage at the property and encourage members attending the property to be a conservative with water usage as possible.

We also continue to be cognisant of the ongoing collection, storage and usage of firewood at the property and again remind all members to replace wood that has been used over the weekend through the use of the property trailer and the identified wood stores around the tracks.

Page 22: NISSAN NEWS · 4 AUGUST 2019 NISSAN NEWS Below is a list of trips and events for club members to attend. For full details look on the Club Forum. If you wish to attend a trip then

20 AUGUST 2019 NISSAN NEWS www.nissan4x4vic.com.au

In line with comments made by our previous president in the 2017 AGM minutes, we have continued to enact aspects of the business plan. We have been able to complete the arborist's report, an item on the business plan for several years, which will allow us to maintain the property and the safety of the members in fully supportive and professionally educated manner.

Our biggest expense has been for the maintenance of our tracks that allow entrance into the property for all members regardless of vehicle and accommodation type. The improvements on the main and chicken tracks have allowed easier access for all and a significantly easier access into the property by another of our other emergency services partners.

Sales

Over the past year we have been able to manage the upkeep of our merchandise sales for our members, both associate and full, to purchase items of clothing, and safety equipment. This has allowed members to show their membership through the wearing of branded clothing and other items.

Sergeant at Arms

Over the past year, our Sergeant at Arms has made sure that when we attend the meetings at the great central location, our setup is ready to go for members and guests and that we have clear guidelines about how to take down and pack away the chairs to make certain we are meeting the requirements of the venue. They have also managed our monthly raffles and fines and made certain that all of our mistakes one trips are brought to the attention of all. In a fun way of course.

Key Master

Over the past year, our key master has made certain that all financial full members have the appropriate key to access the property and that all keys are returned when they are no longer a financial member. This is to ensure the ongoing safety of the property as only financial members are covered by our insurance at the property and on trips.

Publicity Officer

Over the past year, our publicity officer has brought us several educational and informative presenters and has made certain we have a key presence at the key four wheel drive shows,

Editor

Over the past year, our monthly magazine has been completed and provided to our membership, both Associate and Full, information on publicised trips, our community supporters and any items we have for sale as a member. I think we would all agree that this is a key part to keeping those of our members that are unable to attend club meetings, informed about what is happening.

Webmaster and Membership Secretary

Over the past year both of these positions have been vacant and as a result of no interest, these positions have been held in a caretaker mode by our editor. Our website is our key front face to the public and our membership and more recently we have been able to allow those interested in the club, to apply for membership from this location. The ongoing attraction and enrolment of new members and the provision of information to members via the website has been demonstrated over recent months. The membership position is key in making certain that all new applications are presented to the committee at the earliest possible time, and that those members accepted by the committee are identified and updated with FWDV to ensure they are covered by our insurance.

Without the support of our caretaker in these two se activities were would not have been able to recruit the 32 new members this past financial year and the current membership we maintain during the process of the new year membership payments.

I would also like to thank those people behind the scenes that make certain that all members of the club are aware of the business. For many years, this has been held by Mike and Jane Carbis and I would like to thank them for their dedication to this role.

The post mistress role and front desk host has been handed over to Wanda McLaughlin with the support in the host role by Brian, and again would like to pay thanks to these two people who support the introduction of new members to the meeting and the provision of the magazine to those members unable to attend.

Executive Committee

I would also like to pay thanks to the executive committee who have supported me in this role. A female president of the club has been a first for the club and has posed significant challenges and cultural changes. The support I have been provided by our secretary, treasurer and vice president has been outstanding and I thank you for this.

However, it has become apparent over recent meetings that the membership does not fully support the committee and as President, I have to take responsibility for this. It is as a result of this position of the membership that I see no other option than to stand down and not nominate for re-election, but to allow the club to select a committee that better suits their needs and that will allow the membership to again build up a level of trust in its elected committee with how the club is managed.

I wish the new committee the best of luck and hope that 2018-2019 is a positive year for both the committee and the membership.

Thank You and have a wonderful and safe 2018-19 Sarah Bounden President 2017-2018

Etiquette at Wandarrah - the Storage of Vehicles (Cars, Campers and Vans, as well as camp site setup). There are some unwritten rules/etiquette governing this.

There are occasions where members might wish to stay at Wandarrah for consecutive weekends and would rather not pack up camp, tow vehicles home and return the following weekend. Or where Anzac day weekend might be close to Easter for instance.

It is quite acceptable for members to do this at their own risk – remember the property is unattended during the week most of the time.

If doing this, you should make a note in the Sign in book to this effect, noting when you will return.

If it is likely to be longer than a couple of weeks, particularly in the event of a vehicle breakdown, where possible the vehicle/camper etc should be moved away from ‘Prime Sites’, typically those close to the hut/fire area.

On another matter – their has been a Kayak left at Wandarrah for a long time now. Could the owner of this please contact the Land Coordinator.

Treasurer: Brian Rollins F19 Income $37876 exp $35000k, an apparent gain of $2871, but be aware there was a change from an accrual accounting method to cash method so these figures are not directly comparable.
