The population in India on 1st March 2001 stood at 1,027,015,247 persons
Almost 40% of Indians are younger than 15 years of age
In the period between 1996-2016, population in the:
– age group 15-59 will increase from 519 to 800 million
– age group < 15 yrs will decline from 353-350 million
– age group > 60 yrs will increase from 62.3 to 112.9 million
