They won the first prize and won kudos from audiences all over! Congratulations on their persistent efforts and meticulous training! Happy New Year 2014! May your new year be filled with joy!

The first edition of Vibrations 2014, brings you a flash back of the last semester.

As a team we have had opportunities to work with several great organizations in and out of Kerala. Big and small projects that helped our staff and students to col-laborate and work together.

For the first time we have a group of volunteers who have been involved with our students in tutoring and mentoring and this has created a wonderful experience for our students as well as for the volunteers.

Visitors from International Institute of Sign Languages and Deaf Studies, Uni-versity of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK

Dr Ulrike Zeshan, Director of ISLANDS and Mr Sibaji Panda, Lecturer at UCLAN visited NISH from November 3rd to 6th .The discussions focused on collaborations between UCLAN and NISH on deaf education and sign language projects They also addressed the students and staff and observed the classes.

Ms Jeena Mary Joy of ASLP department won the best oral poster award in the category of Habilitation of Children with Cochlear Implants at the “Asia Pacific Symposium on Coch-lear Implants (APSCI)” at Hy-derabad. The poster was on ”Measurement of Outcome Ef-fectiveness for Cochlear Im-plantation in Children Aged 1 to 3 Years in Kerala, India – An Interim Report of a Longitudi-nal Study”. Ms Neetha M.N., AVT expert of Early Interven-tion program accompanied Ms Jeena at the conference. The coauthors were Ms Sita S. Dr Suja Kunnath and Dr Samuel N. Mathew.

Congratulations for Best oral poster at APSCI!

NISH Day 2013

16th NISH institute day was celebrated with programs by students and staff, on 8th October 2013 at the Kerala University Senate Hall. NISH Honorary Director Shri. G. Vijaya Raghavan and the Executive Director Dr Samuel N. Mathew spoke at the function. Mr Ananthu, Chairman, Students Union presented the report. A time of enjoyment for the children and their families!

Ashik & team from NISH won “Surya Champions” a programme of Surya TV channel. “Surya Champions” is a competition for specially abled people on the lines of other popular reality shows. The team received a cash prize of Rs 3 lakhs. The winning team members are Ashik, Amal Dev, Bobin, Jafar, Rahul, Ajo, Balu, Sumesh, Renju, Harilal, Anil, Mathew and Appu from BFA(HI). Ms Chithra Prasad, Degree HI was the faculty mentor. Congratulations!

NISH Pace Setter program recognizes the staff who did something beyond their call of duty and thus set a positive example for others to follow. This prgram is just to say, “You set a good example. We salute you”.

New Leaders for the College unionCrowning Glory

The Students’ Union for 2013-14 took charge on November 13th , 2013. Ms Parvathy Pavithran, staff advi-sor, administered the oath of office. Dr B. Sandhya, Addl. DGP, was the chief guest. She promised support the deaf students in their efforts to ensure justice and acessibility in the society. Our Students Union compris-es of hearing and hard of hearing representatives.

Mr Prasanth R.L. and Ms Raji N.R. of Degree(HI) visited Gallaudet University and Rochester Institute of Technology in the USA as part of the Faculty Exchange program for three weeks in November.

Project with University of Michigan

Ms Kelly Kowatch and Dr Jiyojeet Pal from Universi-ty of Michigan visited NISH on November 25th , 2013 to kick-off the joint project with NISH.Dr Anne Varghese, Head, Department of Psychology, NISH and her team will work on a project, ‘Policy related matters on Disa-bility’ with University of Michigan. Three post-graduate students from University of Michigan will be working along with Dr Anne and team. They will be in India dur-ing the final phase of the project in May, 2014 and will be at NISH campus for 12 weeks.

Making a ‘Fruitful’ Cam-pus

Students Union and Bhoomitra Club joined hands with ‘We Plant”, an organization dedicated to plant fruit trees in public places all across Kerala, planting 50 fruit tree sap-lings on NISH campus. Prof. Joshua George, co-founder of ‘We Plant’ and Dr. Samuel N. Mathew, Executive Director partici-pated.

Department of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology conducted CRE program from September 25th to 27th, entitled ‘Augmentative Alter-native Communication for Children with Cerebral Palsy & other Multiple Disabilities’.Thirty one participants attended. Dr Sharanya Anil Bajaj, Academic Coordinator, Grassroots school, Chennai conducted the ses-sion on the second day of the program. Other speakers were Ms S. Sita & Ms Swathi G. of ASLP Department.

Workshop on Auditory Verbal Therapy for Sruthitharangam Project

An intermediate level workshop on AVT was organized from 11th -15th November 2013 as part of Sruthitharamgam Cochlear Implant Scheme of Government of Kerala. Ms Jaspal Chaud-hary, Habilitation Manager, Cochlear Asia Pacific took the classes. The workshop focused on developing speech and languageskills through auditory modality in children with hearing loss. A research group is formed for conducting a research on innovative

corrective speech therapy techniques for congenitally deaf children. Ms Sushama and Ms Neetha of Early intervention department, Ms Arya and Ms Arya Chand of ASLP Department are collaborating to conduct the research.

Continuing Rehabilitation Education Program

ISHACON 2014

ISHACON, the annual conference of the Indian Speech & Hearing Association will be held in Kochi in February 2014. Six of NISH’s faculty will present papers.

Social Justice Day Celebrations

Staff and students of NISH attended the Social Justice Day Celebrations from 24th to 26th Oc-tober 2013 at Malappuram. Ms Sapna from Early Intervention Programme, Ms Maria, Social worker, Ms Arya and Ms Sreeba from ASLP department led a group of students at the event. Dr. Samuel N. Mathew was the speaker on Disability issues at the Seminar. NISH had an in-formation stall at the venue. NISH joined hands with AWH College, Calicut to conduct a hearing assessment camp.

‘Requirement Analysis & Coding standards - An industry approach’Training Session by Allianz Cornhill

A follow up training session on ‘Requirement Analysis & Coding standards - An industry approach’ was conducted by Allianz Cornhill, Technopark on 19th December at NISH. Students of B.Sc.Computer Science(HI) presented their projects before the visiting team. The first session was conducted on October 4th & 5th , 2013. The team also promised to guide 2 or 3 projects of the VI semester B.Sc.Computer Science(HI) students from January 2014.

LIFE OF PI – Seminar by Department of Computa-tional Biology and Bio informatics

Mr Umesh, Lecturer in Department of Computational Biology and Bio informatics conducted a seminar for the preparatory year students of NISH degree course. He explained the derivation Pi in Mathematics. A very interesting and enlightening session for the students!. Ms Roshni V N, faculty, Degree HI coordinated the programme.

Quiz Time at NISH

The winning team at the first ever Quiz competition for Deaf students at NISH: Ms Jini Joseph,Ms Theertha and Ms Anjaly.

Mr Joseph Paul, a volunteer mentoring our degree stu-dents and Ms Neeena, faculty, Degree HI were the brains behind this novel idea. Joseph Paul was the Quiz Master. The response was overwhelming!

Opening the World of Fashion Designing Mrs Salju Jose (wife of Former Chief Secretary, Shri. Jose Cyriac), a fashion designer and Ms Maya Keischgens from Pearl Institute,New Delhi,conducted a session for BFA(HI) stdents at NISH on November 6th, 2013. The aim of the programme was to create awar-ness about fashion designing and job opportunities in this field. Ms Sithara, faculty, BFA department coordinated the programme.

The following papers were presented at the two day National Seminar on Multidisciplinary Ap-proach to Childhood Disability Management or-ganised by Centre for Disability studies from De-cember 3rd to 4th, 2013.

• “Language used by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults for Thinking and Processing” - Ms Shirly G, Head , Degree HI. Co-author: Mr Shaji S.V., System Administrator.

• “Development of communication skill- A socio-cognitive- linguis-tic model of intervention for children with Autism Spectrum disorder “ - Ms Lakshmi S Mohan, Faculty, Dept. of ASLP. Co-authors: Dr Suja K.Kunnathu, Ms Sita S., Ms Rasmiya, Ms Sheeja B.

• “Using AVAZ-a speech generating device to enhance communica-tion abilities of a child with cerebral palsy”- Ms Sita, Faculty, Dept. of ASLP.

• “Early Auditory stimulation for preterm Infants” -Ms Saumya Sunda-ram, Faculty,Dept. of ASLP. Co-author- Ms Arya S, Faculty,Dept. of ASLP.

• Poster: “Awareness among mothers having high risk infants on speech and language developmental milestones.”- Ms Lavanya & Ms Anu Chandran, Interns, Dept. of ASLP. Guided by Ms Saumya Sundaram

Three Cheers to our Volunteers!!About 23 people from different walks of life (degree students, housewives, teach-ers, IT Professionals) joined NISH as volunteers to mentor and tutor our Degree HI students who need help with their studies. Organisations in Trivandrum such as SARSAS(Save a Rupee Spread a Smile), Rotract & MAD (Make a Difference) have come forward to partner with NISH in this wonderful initiative. An orientation pro-gram was arranged for the volunteers on 16th of November. The Executive Director, Dr Samuel N. Mathew expressed appreciation for the selfless efforts of these volun-teers who want to give back to the society. Basic training in Indian Sign Language followed. Ms Raji Gopal, faculty, Degree(HI) coordinates this programme.

World Disability Day Celebrations at NISH

Daily News Broadcast in Indian Sign Language (ISL) at NISH

NISH started a daily news broadcast in Indian Sign Language. It is broadcast on the big screen in the front lobby. The team include Mr Babloo Kumar, ISL instructor at NISH, Ms Silvy Maxi Mena, faculty, Degree HI, Mr Kannan T.R., Lab. Asst(CS), Mr Vijayakumar K.,System Admn. Asst and Maria M. Baby, Social worker.

The World Disability Day Celebrations was held at NISH on December 3rd, 2013. Dr Samuel N. Mathew, NISH Executive Director addressed the students and ex-plained the importance of self-protection. Shihan G. Jyothinath, Seventh Dan Black belt in the Goju Ryu Karate style conducted a demonstration in self-defense techniques along with his student Ms Silvy Maxi Mena, state champion in Kumite & faculty at NISH.

NISH conducted a camp for dis-tributing disability card and cer-tificate on 12th December 2013 in partnership with the Kerala Social Security Mission.

NISH students won prizes in the Special Sports or-ganized by Lion’s Club at Central stadium on No-vember 30th and Decem-ber1st. Mohammed Sha-meem of V semester B.Sc Computer Science won first prize in Long Jump. Junaid of Preparatory year won the first prize in 100 metres, Mansoor (Prep. Year) came second and Visruth of V Semester B. Sc. Computer Science came third. Mansoor came

first in the 200 mts race too. Special Sports was organized for the differently abled to showcase their talents.

“Empower to Enrich, Include to Integrate”

Christmas Celebration at NISH

The students and staff of NISH joined together for the Christmas celebration on December 20th, 2013. NISH Executive Director Dr Samuel N. Mathew gave the Christmas message that the spirit of all the festivals is the same – peace and happiness. Cakes were distributed and the students sang Christ-mas carols. Preschool kids sang and danced in a mood of celebration. Santa Claus presented gifts to the tiny-tots.

All India Tour 2013Forty one students from Degree(HI) and four teaching staff went for the All India Tour from October 22nd to November 3rd, 2013. The team visited plac-es at Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Ms Parvathy Pavithran, faculty, Degree(HI) was in charge coordinating the event.

Rejuvenation for NISHIANS

NISH staff had a very pleasing and soothing houseboat cruise at Kollam on 16th Novem-ber 2013. Mr Aadersh Chakrapani, Administration Assistant coordinated the event.
