RMA mirrors
3 Mirrors showed chips and risk for crack propagation
Manufacturing of 2 sets of new mirrors is ongoing, repair to remove chips on mirrors is successfully finished; rework of existing flight mirrors will be started immediately
RMA actuator
4 Motor and gear has not successfully passed the extended life test
Alternative gear motor design is developed and confirmed, manufacturing of gear motor units (Actuator) is startedAn additional test setup will be manufactured to do the qualification testing and acceptance testing in parallel
Subsystem Schedule Slippage
5 FWA, GWA, RMA, DS, CAA and MSS are on the critical path in the overall schedule
ESA & Astrium exercise for identification of alternative integration and test scenarios completed Mitigation measures e.g. to procure additional hardware for work-around identified and agreed

TOP Risks & Issues (3/3)
Area # Details Status & Mitigation
Detector Subsystem
6 ASIC fracture problemTotal noiseDQE drop
All current ASICs declared as not flight worthy New production agreed between NASA and Teledyne Pathfinder DS will be provided as surrogate
8 electrons (vs. 6) due to unstable/noisy bias voltage from ASIC
Tuning of ASIC has shown that the 6 electron requirement can be achieved, however the power requirements have not been achieved at the required noise requirement
Noise performance to be demonstrated in end-to-end subsystem
DQE drop on FM detectors has eroded the margin on sensitivity in certain wavelength areas. However, this drop may be due to test configurations and recent testing on two flight spare detectors show that they both meet DQE requirements at all wave lengths.

DS Status Teledyne has completed all testing of the final four SCAs in the NIRSpec
inventory. Two devices failed testing and are clearly non-flight detectors
S058 and S060 exhibited good total noise and dark current performance and are candidate flight spare detectors
Preliminary Results (as analyzed by GSFC personnel): Total Noise for S058 & S060 is 6.8e- rms and 6.4e- rms (Spec is 6e- rms) Dark Current for S058 & S060 is 0.013e-/s and 0.012e-/s (Spec is 0.01e-/s) DQE performance meets spec

The final results will be used to determine whether either or both devices meet the NIRSpec sensitivity requirement (S053 & S044 will also be included in this analysis).
The best two detectors will be used for the Flight Spare FPA Build.

DS Status
FPE to ASIC communication issues
Teledyne has determined that the issue can be solved by raising the common mode voltage to the ASIC
Working to change the common mode voltage (from 1.1 V to 1.8 V) supplied to the ASIC by the FPE
Meeting system noise/power requirements
The Detector Subsystem has not met both noise and power requirements during testing on the ETU and Pathfinder systems.
Noise requirements (<6e-) have been met, but at increased power dissipation from the ASIC. The ASICs being used on the Pathfinder Detector Subsystem have power dissipations of 14-17mW versus a requirement of 10.5mW

Key points FM calibration Most extensive campaign prior the commissioning phase ! Build the set of calibration files necessary to prepare the NIRSpec
data processing software. Deliverable to NASA/STScI. As far as possible, allow an early validation of some key NIRSpec
operation and calibration concepts / schemes. Wavelength calibration, target acquisition…
Major NIRSpec-level calibration items Calibration of the “coordinate transforms” between the OTE
focal plane and the detector plane (for TA !) Calibration of the MOS spectrographic modes
Extensive and time-consuming calibration! Classical spectrographic calibration steps
Calibration of the SLIT and IFU spectrographic modes. Characterization of NIRSpec radiometric response
