d design travel  is a series of travel guides that introduces Japanese prefectures from the perspective of long-lasting design. The editorial team spends two months  living and traveling in the prefecture covered to find places that are unique to it. The guides are written honestly and only feature places and things the editorial team found moving.

About the Author“D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT” was established in 2000 by the designer Kenmei Nagaoka. Based on the concept of “long-lasting design,” our long-term goal is to establish retail outlets in each of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Each outlet will discover long-lasting designs produced in the local region, and introduce them to its customers. D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT operates stores and restaurants, and publishes travel guides to reexamine the uniqueness of the 47prefectures of Japan.

OKAKURA Tenshin (1863-1913), a well-

known government official and an artistic

leader, left the great legacy of having devel-

oped modern Japanese art in the Meiji era, a

period during which dramatic westernization

took place. His major achievements include

revolutionizing Japanese art, preserving

ancient art, and establishing the Tokyo Fine

Arts School and the Nihon Bijutsuin (the

Japan Art Institute). He was also a curator of

the Departement of Chinese and Japanese

Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Tenshin was a man of international per-

spective; he published “The Book of Tea” in

English and introduced Japanese and other

East Asian cultures and art to westerners. In

his later years, he moved to Izura, Ibaraki

Prefecture, a place he regarded as suitable

for developing an ideal art community. He

relocated the Nihon Bijutsuin to Izura and

recruited his pupils, including YOKOYAMA

Taikan, SHIMOMURA Kanzan, HISHIDA

Shunso and KIMURA Buzan, in order to

develop new era of Japanese art. In the

Okakura Tenshin Memorial Room, his achieve-

ments in various fields are honored. We also

introduce the historial importance of Izura, an

area where Tenshin and other artists worked

to create a new form of Japanese art.─ Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Ibaraki

people in various forms on a routine basis. This is

how the festival successfully continues taking place.

If it is the event that is just held once every 3 years,

things wouldn’t be this way.

Well, can you please tell me the highlights of this

time’s Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale?─

A lot of artists from foreign countries are joining,

too, but as a whole, everyone seems to be putting in

much more effort than ever before and working very

carefully. And, as I mentioned above, a lot of perfor-

mance style artists are participating. A greater vari-

ety of people than ever before are getting involved in

the festival in various forms. Also, what is really

important as a concept, is that the artists who have

participated in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale

haven’t only insisted “This is my artwork” but also

established something like a gimmick that revealed

the place, something that could show the local place

and the background. Or I should say, that they have

made it with the local people. This time, in addition

to this, we are presenting things that the local

people have achieved, for example, making rice

fields, or about how they built roads, or made tun-

nels, or changed the flow of a river etc.

We present such construction works as a form of

art in such a place where it has been difficult to live

since the olden days (Tsumari is one of the most

eminent areas of heavy snowfall in Japan.) Another

thing is this, because we are putting in so much

effort for Asian artists, a lot of artists from Asia are

coming. So, various Asian foundations are added to

it and Tsumari is becoming a place for many Asian

artists to meet each other. Art is quite difficult to

understand and is laborious, but I feel that art can

bring various people together. I think such things are

the specific aspect this time.

I see, it is also getting much attention from over-

seas, isn’t it?─

It’s been attracting so much attention. I was sur-

prised know the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale came

up in a discussion in the parliament house the other

“Remember to be proud of”

Have you had any feedback from young partici-

pants where they had found attractiveness in the

country town or took actions?─

A supporter’s group of mainly young women named

Kohebi-tai (meaning: Team Small Snakes) has been

carrying out some activities, and quite a few of them

are getting married with local men (who live in

Echigo Tsumari), as if wedding season has arrived

over there. I must wonder “are we doing a marriage

arrangement business or something,” and I have no

choice but to participate in their weddings quite a

few times. The Setouchi Triennale is the same story.

The population in the festival-related regions (depop-

ulated region) isn’t decreasing. It is actually increas-

ing. Four families actually moved to the island (of

Setouchi) because the villagers who left the island

once before visited their home again with their chil-

dren. Then their children said “I want to live in a

place like this” This was the first time in Japan that

a closed-down school actually reopened. I know

Setouchi is a much easier place to live. Speaking of

Tsumari, it isn’t really easy to live there unless you

are used to snow. Even so, three couples had a wed-

ding together a little while ago.

It is a wonderful story, isn’t it? You stated in your

book “Art no chikaku hendo (meaning: The Diastro-

phism of Art)”-“I’ve gotten to know how much the

elderly people in Echigo Tsumari know about the

soil through the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale.

Such people’s techniques are the foundations of

various artworks and craftworks, and this is proba-

bly a story that links to the Tigris-Euphrates, Huang

He and Yangtze.” So, I think, having such a view-

point and imagination power allows us to feel and

experience various things, for example, the time

that flows in Echigo Tsumari, the feelings of

respect for the ancestors, and new

ways of understanding the world which

is created by the fusion between the

exhibited artworks and the place. ─

Speaking of the land of Japan, warm

and cold currents crush in both sides of

Japan and seasonal winds blow, and

such a country of an island chain, which

has a lot of rain and four seasons, is

very rare. Having lots of rain means that

the stones and rocks get broken and

crushed by the growth of organic sub-

stances and turn into soil. That is how

the soil is very rich in Japan. Japanese

made effective use of the soil and devel-

oped rice fields, and then rice became

the basis of life. “How we utilize the soil

and water,” this has something to do

with using the brain and hands for

humans. This created the power of the

Japanese culture. In this sense, because

Tsumari is Japan’s greatest rice-produc-

ing region, through the Echigo-Tsumari

Art Triennale, everyone of Tsumari

started understanding the fact that they

have been engaged in agriculture for

generations is actually their pride. Tokyo

doesn’t mean it is advanced, and the old

men and ladies remember such pride

especially in the times when the global

environment has become harsh.

In Japan, speaking of if people who

live in urban area take their pride in their

culture or not, I hardly think they do.─

People who live in urban area don’t,

do they? But young people who live in

urban area are gradually understanding,

and thinking “We thought country towns

were left behind but actually there are

more things that we can get in return

over there” That is why, about 1,000

people are coming to Tsumari to help.

day, someone stated “The Echigo-Tsumari is the

best successful example for community

development.”
