MOTHER OF ROCKFor my brother, my sister, and me, Guitar Hero was a competition of who could score the most
points on the hardest level. Mom, on the other hand, would play the ten-minute “Freebird” on the easiest level while we kids prepared for our next showdown. When Mom restarted the song after missing a note, we all shouted our disapproval. “Rock stars do what they want,” she said, and we laughed because we agreed: Mom was a rock star. That’s why, later, her funeral felt more like the
last stop on a farewell tour, with “Freebird” as the perfect send-off.
TWO SIMPLE WORDS On the first day of first grade, I stood by the front door with butterflies in my stomach. I voiced
my biggest concern to my mother: “How will I make friends?” Crouching in front of me, she handed me advice I carry with me to this day: “Be Switzerland.” Be friends with everyone. Treat
everyone equally and fairly. For all of my 20 years, I have lived by these words. Soon I will gradu-ate and become a part of the real world. And on that first day, nervously facing new responsibili-
ties, I know I will whisper two words to myself: “Be Switzerland.”
MY LITTLE ST. NICKMy six-year-old son, Nicholas, sat in the grocery cart as I perused the canned vegetables. “How
about this one, Mommy?” he asked, and handed me a can of asparagus. “I love asparagus!” I told him. “Asparagus is my favorite vegetable, but it’s just too expensive.” I put the can back on the
shelf. Three months later, I opened a crudely wrapped present from under the Christmas tree. It was a can of asparagus. Nicholas beamed in delight as he explained how he had saved his pennies
to buy me the best Christmas gift I’d ever received.

June & JulyCrazy Weeks of Summer
CWS IS BACK!!!There are 9 Weeks of Crazy Fun!Hopefully everything will be back to normal But if we are still staying at home, we will annouce of what we will be doing

So much of what we do has been postponed, canceled, or just changed dramatically due to the current pandemic. Karate practice is no exception. So many of you have shown wonderful steadfastness in training with us via Zoom, and your dedication is nothing short of amazing.
Make no mistake -- there is no substitute for the sweat and smiles you get training with your friends at the Dojo. But you can still make meaningful progress towards becoming a great
black belt. We’re going to offer some ideas on how, even with self-quarantining, you can actu-ally improve your karate skills.
Just a quick historical note: Whether it was China, Japan, Okinawa or Korea, getting togeth-er at the dojo was subject to many disruptions. Wars, sadly, erupted from time-to-time, but extreme weather and earthquakes could also make life complicated. But, the truly dedicated
found ways to not let their training stop.
Kata was made exactly for situations like this. The founders of the various Asian martial arts invented fighting forms precisely because it provided practitioners good hard training, even
in times far worse than ours right now.
That you can practice all of your kicks, punches, stances and blocks is obvious. But kata also improves your timing and maybe most importantly, your footwork. Not being in school right now, or working from home can get to be a drag, but this is a golden opportunity to perfect this indispensable part of your karate training. Best of all, kata can be done in the tightest of
spaces. Not a lot of space in your home? No problem. Just break up the kata into sequences of two, three or four moves.
For higher ranks, nihanchi kata is tailor-made for this situation. The legendary Okinawan master Choki Motobu preached that nihanchi kata was really all you needed to keep your
karate sharp, and it was said he practiced it eight hours a day. While few of us will take it that far, there’s no doubt it is the ideal form when space is tight.
Maybe kata’s just not your thing. No probs. A practice that many accomplished karateka have used is to simply stake out a space, find a technique on which they need to improve, and prac-tice it over and over again. Over time, that weak technique will become one of your strongest.
Here’s one thing we do not recommend. If you have a brother or sister who is in karate, abso-lutely do NOT practice anything involving contact with your brother or sister or neighbor or cousin or your dog or your cat or your goldfish without adult supervision. For many of you, sparring is one of your favorite things to do, but with a partner in this situation is not safe so
please don’t do it.
8
But here’s what you can do. You have been taught many sparring combinations by black belts whom, between all of them, have experience at least two dozen different systems.
No doubt, you have picked up at least one combination or series of techniques you really like. Perfect it. Or, find one at which you wish you were better, and focus on that one. And, there are also Yaka-Suke kumites, excellent practice, which can be done solo, both for spar-
ring and self-defense.
All of us are looking forward to the day, hopefully soon, that we can safely move about. But, as tedious as all the self-quarantining and social distancing is, we don’t have to let it
stop us from improving the things at which we want to excel.
Stay healthy and stay safe!Renshi Kreutzer

Shihans Though on ShoshinShoshin is a concept in Zen Buddhism meaning, “beginner’s mind”
The Character”sho” is the same one used u the martial arts ranking system, “Shodan”or “Beginning Level”. To have Shoshin, one must have an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack
of preconceptions, just as a beginner would.
Looking at it this way gives a new meaning to “Be Quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to an-ger.” Remember listening has become a forgotten art, so don’t focus on your reply, but on what is
being saidShoshin is the empty cup. As long as your cup is full, nothing else can put into it. You must first
empty your cup
Bertand Russel is quoted “ the whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves and wiser people are so full of doubts.”
In the martial arts the “Master” must ask this important question, “is this person capable of learning?” If “no”, then nothing may come of the relationship. However, when the right studetn meets the right student “master” amazing things can happen. True Shoshin focues on each step,
not just the final goal. Be less concerned with with the destination and pay more to the process of the journey. Bruce Lee wrote that “ a goal is not alway meant to be reached. it often serves to be
simply as something to aim at.” The true teacher will not hold back or be jealous of any of success-es. Your success will be the legacy that they leave behind, a form of immortality if you wish. This cannot happen if the student or teach is intent upon the legacy. Both have to be focused on the
process of learning. Legacy is by- product, not the end in itself both. Do not let concentration on expectations cloud your thinking. Just do it and it will lead you naturally.
See pg 11 for the rest...
Don’t be afraid to fail! the difference between “Master” and students is that “Master” has failed more times than the student has tired! When make a mistake, don’t give up learn from it. Re-
gardless of the “expertise” you think you process, always think like beginning student. This is the concept of the “beginners mind” Shoshin does mean forgetting everything you have learned in
the past, just set it aside for a time as you lean something nw. Step out of you comfort zone!
Learning a new art or skill should/will always take back to the “beginners mind” so that can share your knowledge with your students and enjoy seeing their success as i have enjoyed seeing your
success.Yours in Budo,Shihan Burnett
WIth all that we are facing with quarantine & confidenment due to COVID 19I wanted to reprint this paper on beginners mind, Shoshin
We are faced with fear and unknown and must relearn, rethink, or reset our thoughts & actions. This I feel is a good thing. Every day is a new learning experience to of we
have the attitude of Shoshin we will find better ways with dealing with our lives Be Well, be blessed - Shihan
