As our year moves forward, God calls us to a deeper and deeper relationship with Himself and with the community around us. It is our personal connections that are most inviting to new members. If you or someone you know is interested in joining or returning to the Catholic Faith, now is the time to call or email Sr. Maxine (pastoral minister and RCIA) at (614) 866- 1575 or [email protected]. Even if you would simply like to have a conversation around questions you have, your call is welcomed and important. Our RCIA class is forming now and will start in September. ST. PIUS X LENDING LIBRARY… SUMMER READING AT ITS BEST! Did you know that St. Pius X has a lending library? It’s located in the south exit of the church (the exit door that comes out on the side of church at the driveway). There is a large selection of books in which to choose from. Take a few home to read, bring them back and take a few more. Please visit the library to see what might spark your interest. We just received many new books to add to our growing collection. AND THE WINNER IS... Ella Anzelmo for her Key Lime pie entry in the SPX Pam Briggs Memorial Pie Baking Contest at this year’s Festival. Second place went to Kristen Carey, third place – Jane McKenney, and fourth place – Rick Shoemaker. The pie baking contest returned to the Festival as the “culinary competition” took place on Friday evening. Many, many thanks to the two dozen participants that shared their baking expertise – your efforts are much appreciated! All pie baking enthusiasts are invited to practice and prepare for the 2019 contest which will be an annual event of the Festival honoring its founder, Pam Briggs. Thanks also to the judges for their delectable decision making and not to be forgotten, thanks to the supportive SPX parishioners and surrounding community for purchasing the pie slices to benefit St. Pius X. ADOPT-A-STUDENT PROGRAM: St. Pius X parishioners again responded enthusiastically to the annual Adopt-A-Student program, sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 5253. A total of 413 school boxes were collected during the last two weekends of July. They were packed on Monday, July 30 and delivered to the St. Francis Center in McArthur on Tuesday, July 31, with 331 boxes filled with pens, crayons, glue sticks, pencils, scissors, and erasers, and the rest partly filled. Monetary donations totaled $2,166.00. The totals for both boxes and donations broke last year’s records. In addition, many additional items for classroom use, including facial tissues, hand sanitizers, wipes, food storage bags, filler paper, and spiral notebooks, were donated. The 242 packs of paper and 171 notebooks represented more than double the amount collected last year. Students receiving these items are exclusively from Vinton County, the smallest in Ohio in population and one of the poorest in terms of average family income. Site coordinator Ashley Riegel said the St. Francis Center is where most students in the county come if their parents have a hard time affording school supplies. She also said a significant amount of the donated cash will be used to purchase clear plastic backpacks for high school students from a wholesaler at a deep-discount price. The rest is set aside for use throughout the year as needed and is strictly for education-related requests. The center serves all faiths, and most students receiving the donated items are non-Catholic. The St. Francis Center’s staff sends a heartfelt “Thank- You” to St. Pius X parishioners for performing this corporal work of mercy. Please pray for the students, their families, and teachers. Special thanks also to Culver’s of Reynoldsburg, Walmart, our St. Vincent de Paul Society, and SPX Girl Scout troops for their donations of cash, gift cards, or school items.

Dream big and reach high, turning every day into an adventure your daughter will never forget!

Mark your calendars now to attend the Parent Information Meeting:

Wednesday, September 12, 7:00 p.m. in the PAC Room.

ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GIRL SCOUTS: Whether you are a parent, an empty nester, or a young professional looking to give back to the community, Girl Scouts has opportunities for you. Adult (over 18 years of age) volunteers, male and female, are needed. LEADERS FOR TROOPS at SPX are very much needed ESPECIALLY for KINDERGARTEN TROOPS! We cannot place girls in troops until leaders are available. Don't let a girl miss out on Scouting because of a lack of adult volunteers! It starts with one day, one meeting, and one role model that shows a girl she can accomplish more than she ever imagined. In Girl Scouts, we want every girl to feel so excited about her future that she can hardly wait for it, because she knows she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. To learn more or to apply to be a Girl Scout volunteer go to http://gsoh.org/volunteers/ or contact SPX Girl Scout Coordinator Marilyn Magin at [email protected] with any questions.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2018

God’s Unfathomable Mercy is opening the hearts, the minds and the eyes of people of Faith. Our Lady’s Clarion Call – the call once trumpeted at Quito, LaSalette, Fatima, Tre Fontane and Akita – is upon us. The time is now to call upon God, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, to heal our country and return it to holiness. Americans across the country are invited to pray Rosary Coast to Coast wherever they can gather: along the US coasts and borders; in front of state capitols; in other public areas; in parish Churches; or as families while viewing the live-stream of the National Rosary Rally. Rosary Coast to Coast will take place at 4 pm Eastern, 3 pm Central, 2 pm Mountain, 1 pm Pacific. The intentions echo those of the USCCB Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. Individual letters introducing Rosary Coast to Coast have been sent to all active Bishops across all US dioceses requesting their endorsement and support. As we read in Sacred Scripture: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Under the Mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe Everyone from around the nation is encouraged to join ranks as, united, we pray the very powerful 54 Day Rosary Novena from the Feast of the Assumption on August 15 to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. Rosary Coast to Coast will be anchored by the National Rosary Rally in front of the US Capitol in Washington DC on Oct 7 featuring nationally renowned Catholic speakers. Attend or view live stream: details coming soon on novenaforournation.com. We, in the United States, hear the clarion call of the Holy Spirit, through the Immaculata, and each of us sound the reply: “I’m Going In!” The United States shares the conviction, now seen and acted upon in the International community, to enter fully into the spiritual warfare we are facing and to pray for our respective nations at this watershed moment in history. Please watch the bulletin for further details of the event we will be holding at St. Pius X. We would like all parishioners to mark their calendars for this date and plan to attend.

WHAT IS THE 54 DAY ROSARY NOVENA? (www.novenaforournation.com/54-DAY-NOVENA/)

Whoever desires to obtain favors from Me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving. – Promise of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary On March 3, 1884 (in the same year Pope Leo XIII wrote the prayer to St. Michael, and exactly 33 years before the Fatima apparitions), a young girl named Fortuna Agrelli was graced with an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and given this special devotion, which she passed onto others. At the time, young Fortuna was ill with 3 separate incurable diseases and her doctors had given up on her case saying it was hopeless. In desperation, the young girl and her family began a novena of Rosaries. Our Lady appeared to the girl, sitting upon a high throne, surrounded by luminous figures, holding the Divine Child on Her lap, and in Her hand a Rosary. The sick girl greeted the Blessed Virgin with the following words: “Queen of the Holy Rosary, be gracious to me, restore me to health! I have already prayed to Thee in a novena, O Mary, but have not yet experienced Thy aid. I am so anxious to be cured!” “Child,” responded the Blessed Virgin, “you have invoked Me by various titles and have always obtained favors from Me. Now, since you have called Me by that title so pleasing to Me, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, I can no longer refuse the favor you petition; for this name is most precious and dear to Me. Make three novenas, and you shall obtain all.” Once more, the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to the young girl and said, “Whoever desires to obtain favors from Me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.” Obeying Our Lady’s instructions, the young girl was healed and restored to perfect health.

54-DAY ROSARY NOVENA Traditionally a novena is nine days. Thus, Our Lady’s words to young Fortuna, “make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary in petition, and three novenas in thanksgiving.” The novena consists of five decades of the Rosary (one set of mysteries) each day for twenty-seven days in petition; then immediately five decades each day for an additional twenty-seven days in thanksgiving, regardless of whether or not the request has been granted yet. So began six novenas of Rosaries, which became known as the 54-day Rosary Novena. To do the novena properly one must pray the Rosary for 54 consecutive days, without missing a day, and must pray the particular Mystery indicated for that day following the correct sequence. That is, the first day of the novena always begins with the Joyful Mysteries (regardless of what day of the week the novena is started); the second day, the Sorrowful Mysteries are prayed; and the third day of the novena, the Glorious Mysteries are prayed. The fourth day of the novena begins again with the Joyful Mysteries and continues on in that sequence throughout the 54 days of the novena. People have asked over time about the Luminous Mysteries — this novena was given by Our Lady as noted above in 1884 and only allows for the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries. THE MIRACULOUS ROSARY NOVENA It has been reported that the miracle of young Fortuna’s cure upon praying the 54-day Rosary Novena, made a deep impression on Pope Leo XIII. He wrote 17 encyclicals on the Rosary and urged all Christians to love the Rosary and pray it fervently. If you miss the start of the 54 day Rosary Novena join in whenever you found out about the novena and are able to pray it. Part of the power of the 54 day Novena is the number of people praying together.

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR AUGUST 18

Saint Louis of Toulouse(Ftebruary 9, 1274-August 19, 1297)

Saint Louis of Toulouse’s StoryWhen he died at the age of 23, Louis was already a Franciscan, a bishop and a saint! Louis’s parents were Charles II of Naples and Sicily, and Mary, daughter of the King of Hungary. Louis was related to Saint Louis IX on his father’s side and to Elizabeth of Hungary on his mother’s side.Louis showed early signs of attachment to prayer and to the corporal works of mercy. As a child, he used to take food from the castle to feed the poor. When he was 14, Louis and two of his brothers were taken as hostages to the king of Aragon’s court as part of a political deal involving Louis’s father. At the court, Louis was tutored by Franciscan friars under whom he made great progress, both in his studies and in the spiritual life. Like Saint Francis, he developed a special love for those afflicted with leprosy. While he was still a hostage, Louis decided to renounce his royal title and become a priest. When he was 20, he was allowed to leave the king of Aragon’s court. He renounced his title in favor of his brother Robert and was ordained the next year. Very shortly after, he was appointed bishop of Toulouse, but the pope agreed to Louis’s request to become a Franciscan first. The Franciscan spirit pervaded Louis. “Jesus Christ is all my riches; he alone is sufficient for me,” Louis kept repeating. Even as a bishop, he wore the Franciscan habit and sometimes begged. He assigned a friar to offer him correction—in public if necessary—and the friar did his job.Louis’s service to the Diocese of Toulouse was richly blessed. In no time, he was considered a saint. Louis set aside 75 percent of his income as bishop to feed the poor and maintain churches. Each day, he fed 25 poor people at his table.Louis was canonized in 1317 by Pope John XXII, one of his former teachers. When Cardinal Hugolino, the future Pope Gregory IX, suggested to Francis that some of the friars would make fine bishops, Francis protested that they might lose some of their humility and simplicity if appointed to those positions. Those two virtues are needed everywhere in the Church, and Louis shows us how they can be lived out by bishops.
