If you look in almost any space on board the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) you will find something that has been made by the Sailors who work in the Sail Loft.

Unlike the Tailor Shop, which is where uniforms are sewn and mended, the Sail Loft sews and manufactures items for use on board Nimitz from scratch.

Everything from seat covers, to curtains, to covers for various equipment throughout the ship are made by the five Sailors who work in the Sail Loft.

“In the Sail Loft we provide for the ship, not for the people on the ship,” said Seaman Kyoko N. Washington, of Lancaster, Calif.

Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Ryan W. Barnard, a native of San Diego, was named Sailor of the Day July 3 on board the aircraft carrier USS

Nimitz (CVN 68).“It feels good to be named Sailor of the Day,”

said Barnard. “I wasn’t expecting it. It came out of nowhere and came as a complete surprise.”

According to Barnard, he joined the Navy in 2010 to continue his family’s military tradition.

IT3 displayed exceptional skills above his paygrade. He led three technicians in correcting the ship’s Automatic Identificiation System CASREP, giving the ship’s bridge team and maritime authorities the ability to track and monitor commercial vessel movements.

For those Sailors who are looking to be nominated by their departments as a future Sailor of the Day, Barnard offers some advice.

“Keep striving forward,” said Barnard. “Don’t stop working on your next goal.”

Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Jose L. Rodriguez, a native of New Orleans, was named Sailor of the Day, of Fighter Squadron One Four

Six (VFA-146), July 4 on board the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

“It feels good to be named Sailor of the Day,” said Rodriguez. “It feels good to know that all my hard work is paying off.”

Rodriguez has immensely contributed to Nimitz’ and VFA-146’s mission after being at his command for only a short period of time by ensuring the F/A 18’s are fully capable to execute combat operations.

He has been involved in the safe uploading and downloading evolutions of over 630,000 pounds of ordnance.

For those Sailors who are looking to be nominated by their department as a future Sailor the Day, Rodriguez offers some words of advice.

“Keep working even though it feels like no one is watching you, your hard work is noticed,” said Rodriguez.

Sail Loft, but that is not the only place they work.“Working in the Sail Loft is just a part of our

job,” said Seaman Apprentice Robert J. Nunez, of Suffolk, Va. “We also work doing unreps and sea and anchor detail among other things. Working in the Sail Loft is secondary.”

The Sail Loft is open from 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily underway as to allow the Sailors who work there time to stand watches elsewhere on the ship.

A typical working day for the Sailors in the Sail Loft consists of measuring pieces of fabric, cutting the pieces out and stitching them together. To some, making covers may seem like an easy task to complete, but it is very time consuming and requires a lot of concentration and precision.

“The most challenging part of working in the Sail Loft is making sure that the project we are working on fits the item it is made for,” said Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Ronesha M. Goodrun, of Wichita, Kan. “It’s critical to get the correct measurements for the jobs we take in because we don’t have a surplus of material if we make a mistake.”

Working in the Sail Loft can prove to be difficult at times according to Nunez.

“The most challenging part is not having all the correct measurements for the job we are working on and having to go to the space where the item is we are making a cover for to take measurements,” said Nunez. “In a way we are like carpenters and tailors.”

Despite the challenges, Nunez said working in the Sail Loft allowed him the opportunity to try another line of work that differed from working as an undesignated deck seaman.

“I wanted to learn about something else besides what I was doing every day in deck and to try something new,” said Nunez. “I like working in the Sail Loft because it’s like doing arts and crafts.”

Goodrun said the best part of working in the Sail Loft has been learning how to sew, and Washington enjoys meeting all the people who come in and out of their workspace.

Even though there are only five people who work in the Sail Loft, the fruits of their handiwork can be seen throughout the ship.
