Executive Report

Sumter Electric Membership Corporation held its 81st annual meeting of members on June 15 at South Georgia Technical College in Americus. Members and guests were entertained by country music artist Brandon Wheeler and special guest Mike English. Following the recognition of special guests, Congressman Sanford Bishop updated the members on federal legislative issues that affect the daily lives of rural Georgians.

President/CEO Ted McMillan focused on one of the strongest attributes of the electric cooperative system, the commitment of EMCs to help each other during storms. This attribute was on full display when over 400 additional linemen came to our rescue when Hurricane Michael left its mark on Southwest Georgia. It was the largest storm damage in the history of Sumter EMC. With 240 broken poles, 15 of the cooperative’s 23 substations were without power, thus resulting in 19,000 Sumter EMC members being without power. McMillan mentioned the continued diversification of the cooperative’s electric generation options, including additional utility scale solar resources purchased through Green Power EMC.

Sumter EMC mourns the loss of director and friend, Willie Green Cutts With profound sadness, Sumter EMC mourns the loss of Mr. Willie Green Cutts. Mr. Cutts was appointed to the Sumter EMC Board of Directors in May 1977 and served with honor and distinction for 41 years until his death on April 5, 2019. His strong leadership skills and solid reputation were displayed through his distinguished service on the Finance Committee and Policy and Rules Committee of Sumter EMC and the National Advisory Committee for Peanuts. Mr. Cutts was a native of Lee County and a lifelong farmer. In addition to farming, he was a small business owner and operator of what was known and loved by many as “Cutts Restaurant.” Mr. Cutts was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in DeSoto where he served as a faithful member for most of his Christian life. His greatest joy, though, was his devoted wife, Martha, and their loving family of four sons, five daughters, thirty-three grandchildren,

forty-eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. According to Section 4.12 of the By-Laws, the vacancy created on the Board of Directors upon Mr. Cutts’ death must be filled by the affirmative vote of a majority of the remaining Board members, and the Director so elected shall serve the remainder of Mr. Cutts’ term of office. The Board is in the process of considering qualified members of Sumter EMC to fill that vacancy. Members interested in obtaining further information regarding that process should contact Elaina Ethridge no later than Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the Sumter EMC main office in Americus.
