Introduction• Research health‐related topics and present to the community
• Goal of the project is to:
– Showcase knowledge of health related topics
– Develop valuable skills such as
• Research
• Professionalism
• Teamwork
• Public speaking
Origins• Piloted at Garden City High School in April 2012
– More than 100 students from GCHS Health Sciences Academy participated
– Participants called the event a valuable experience

Overview• Each school will be represented by one group of three students– Each group will research a different topic relating to health care
– Each group will present research during the regional Night @ The Lab competition
• Winners from each regional competition will advance to the statewide competition

Getting Started• Teachers must complete and return the registration form to Seth Nutt via:– Email: [email protected]
– Fax: (620) 235‐4041, Attn: Seth Nutt
• The AHEC will provide the team’s topic to the teacher no more than 4 weeks prior to the regional competition– Topic will be provided on the Team Summary Page
– Each topic will relate to either cardiovascular or respiratory health.

Research • All team members must participate
• Topics must be researched using evidence‐based material– List of acceptable online resources is available on the Team Summary Page
• List is not exclusive• Consult teacher to determine if other resources are acceptable
• Classroom teachers will serve as advisors– Teachers may contact Seth Nutt with questions
Presentation• Teams will present research to the community at the regional Night @ The Lab competition
• Oral Presentation– Each group will give 2‐3 minute presentation
– Explain the findings of the research
• Dress code– All students must dress in professional attire
• No jeans and no bling
Presentation• Presentation Display
– Encouraged to be creative
– Each display must include standard 36”x48” trifold corrugated display board
• Display board’s size and/or shape should not be altered

Presentation• Technology can be used if available
– Technology should be used to enhance the oral presentation, not replace it
• Examples include– PowerPoint
– Prezi
– Video
• If access to a power outlet is needed, please contact the AHEC prior to the night of the event
Judging• Panel of judges will be
made up of volunteers from the community
• Judging will be based on:‐ Presentation content‐ Group participation‐ Creativity of display‐ Professionalism
• Top team from each region will advance to the statewide event at KU Medical Center on November 19, 2013
Statewide Competition• The top group from each regional competition will earn a trip to the KU Medical Center– Trip will include:
• Overnight accommodations
• Meals
• Tour of the KU Medical Center campus
• Presentations will bejudged by KU Medical Center staff
