news of TOHOKU
RURAL
EVANGELISM in
northern Honshu
Japan
January 195@
The
New
Year
is
underway and
wo
have much to be thankful
for .
Four boxes from
I l l inoi .
New Mexico
and California added
special
treats to
our Holiday season.
They
contained
just
the
right
little things (as
some
of you called
them)
like
cake
mixes,
real
cake
frosting, Christmas candy and caramel corn, I guess you can
te l l
from this we miss
American
type sweets in our
diet
here. Most of all
we
are thankful for you
who
prayed
and
sent
gifts when we were
greatly
in need. Our October
news
letter stated our
needs.
November
came
and
went
with
receipts
covering
less
than
half of
our
regular
monthly budget.^ Then
in
December
offerings
be^an
to
come
in. Not
very imny
of
them
were marked
Crisis
Fund but we
believe God worked through you
who
sent
those
gifts.
By
year end Russell s and Martha s school tuitions and the rent
were all
paid up to
date. So we face the new year with thankful hearts and,
though
the second term school
tuitions are
due now and
the rent
must
continue to
bo
paid,
wc have seen
again
God's
leading hand
of
blessing.
There
was the usual
year end
cancelation
of
the
jrukawa Bible class because
the room
where
we meet
was used
for
other
activities.
We wish so
much we
could find another
place for the class to meet so there would not be so many interuptions. Brother
Takafuji has been very discouraged
o-ver
a problem in the Sendai church.
After we had
discussed i t together and had come to a decision, I remarked that I
admired
his
attitude in the matter.
He
replied
i t
was
not his attitude, for
he
was
tempted
to
become
very angry over i t but
i t was the Scr iptures that
had shown him what he must
do.
Ho spent
2
days
searching the
Bible
to learn what he should do
and
he
came
up
with
a
Scriptural
answer. t

These
windy

Russell and I worked at least part of

us.
There
have
been
2 sets of reporters out to take pictures of foreigners
building their own house . We received 5 fan letters from Japanese as a result^of th..
iticles besides comments from several of
our
own missionaries and
many
folk here in
the
Sendai
area.
Workmen
from
other
nearby houses
stop
by to
watch
progress. Much of
the construction in unusual to Japanese, such as 2x9 floor joists and 2x4 skeleton
walls and rafters. They
say
it
is SUBARASHI (magnificent and amazing) to see the
foreigner and his wife working together with their hands. In Japanese thinking, we
are making a mark in the community.

For
some time we have debated whether to come
home
for furlough this year, which is
our regular time, or to wait a year. After consulting and receiving the
encouragement
of some of
you

at

i t
seems best to us to

they were placing a loan

We

for
ever.
The
zeal
of the
Lord
of
hosts will
perform
this,
There are many people a ll over the world today who are indifferent
and unconcerned about this wonderful Oounsellor, this mighty God
this
Prince
of
Peace, which
God
has given
a ll
mar.k:ind,
Isaiah assures
us
that
of the increase of Christ's government and of His peace,
there
shall be
no end, The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this, declares
Isaiah, I t
is
a
blessing
and a
comfort to think of these
words a t
this
time. I t is a season of joy, of happiness, of giving. As the new year
comes upon us , le t us determine
to
give ourselves more fully
to
this Son
that
has so
freely
been
given
to
us.
Thus,
the
indifference
and unconcern
seen in
this past
year will be
gradually replaced
with the zeal
of
the
Lord and then the v/orld can know peace in Chris t.
