1) Start up
a) Turn on the computer and login. User name and password are “ftiruser” all lower case. b) The instrument itself is always left on. You do not need to touch any power switch on the
instrument! 2) Opening the Software
a) Double clicking on the OMNIC icon located on the desktop. b) A window called “smart accessory Change” will appear, click “okay”.
3) Set up the Instrument Parameters
a) Click the Expt Set Icon
b) Set the number of scans, resolution, and data spacing for your needs. Change background handling to “collect background after 100 minutes”
4) Collecting a Background
a) Leave sample chamber empty. Close and lock sample compartment.

b) Click on “Col Bkg”
c) Click “yes” when confirmation box appears. The instrument is now taking a background spectrum of the empty sample compartment.
5) Collecting a Spectrum of your Sample
a) FTIR is able to analyze solids, liquids, and gases. Prepare your sample according to your specific laboratory procedure.
b) Place sample in the instrument, close and lock sample compartment. c) Click Col Smp.
d) A window will appear asking you to name your spectrum. Name your spectrum and click “okay.”
e) The instrument is now collecting a spectrum. When it is finished, a confirmation window will appear, click “yes.”
6) Saving Your Spectrum
a) Go to file>save as b) Save your spectrum as a .CSV file. (Example: Chem212_hexane.csv). By saving it as a CSV
(comma separate value) you can easily open it in Microsoft Excel. c) Save your file on the desktop, a jump drive, or a specific class folde d) Be sure to close the software and log out when you are done. Leave the instrument itself
on!
