Dear Reader

Everyone involved in rallying, whether as a team, spectator, organiser or support crew, has one common denominator – a deep passion for seeing cars being thrown around challenging and often difficult routes. For those of us lucky enough to be able to see the cars out on the rally, we rarely take note of the many that are just as passionate but never even get to see any of the action out on the stages. We cannot even begin to consider putting on the rally without the support of a great number of people from marshals, time keepers, stage commanders, rescue crews, medics, radio crews as well as a team who are back at HQ heads buried in computers, sorting out the paperwork, entries, the timings, safety, service-park and logistics. And all are volunteers who give up their free time for the love of rallying. In all we had over 500 people working on the Nicky Grist Stages last year and our heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every one of them. So we dedicate this year’s programme to the stalwarts of rallying who enable us to be a part of, what we think is, the best sport in the world.

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable day with us, watching the Nicky Grist Stages Rally. The championships with us are all having a fantastic battle for their titles and we are sure that you will be watching some epic and close fought action. This year all entrants have the opportunity to, not only compete in their championships, but also to enter the Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge, with the biggest prize in national rallying on offer! But more of that later.

The BTRDA has given us a very exciting season to date and with entries from the top crews into the Nicky Grist Stages, we have a feeling there will be some championship deciding action from them on our stages. A breakdown of who to watch out for can be found further in this programme. We also have the Pirelli MSA Welsh Forest Rally Championship joining us and we noted that Luke Francis and John Roberts, fresh from their win on the Severn Valley Stages were first to put their entries into the Nicky Grist Stages.

The Nicky Grist Stages would not be complete without the Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship, the ANWCC Forest Stage Championship and Historic Stage Championship and finally, the FMP Rally Challenge. We wish every entry in this year’s Nicky Grist Stages a safe and enjoyable days rallying. And for all spectators, please take note of what the marshals advise, and keep your brains in gear – this year we have been given a sharp reminder of how dangerous rallying can be and we understand that you want to find that perfect spot to watch from, but we work really hard to give you positions on stages that are great viewing places. Please enjoy your day and stay safe.

As always, the proceeds of the programme sales go, totally, to local charities and not to the rally organisers. It is important to us that we are able to offer something back to the local community and so, thank you for purchasing this programme.

Happy Rallying and Enjoy your Day.

!FIRE RISK

At this time of the year the forests and heath-lands are very dry and inevitably there is a considerable risk of fire. The rally organisers, Forestry Commission and Army would appeal to everyone to follow a few simple precautions:

• Do not smoke in areas of risk.• Do not discard cigarettes or matches without ensuring they are completely extinguished.• Do not light any fires or barbecues.• Be careful where you park your car – it is not unknown for hot exhausts to set fire to dry grass.• And please take your entire litter home with you, Thank you.

Please remember that if the Fire Services have to be called out it will almost certainly delay the rallies progress and could lead to the stage(s) being cancelled.

The event will be held under the General Regulations of the MSA Limited (incorporating the Provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA), the Supplementary Regulations, and any written instructions that the organisers issue.

THE ORGANISER’S WELCOME

Welcome to the 34th running of Quinton Motor Club’s forest stage rally. For the fourth year the event is titled the “Nicky Grist Stages” to acknowledge the involvement of our sponsor Nicky Grist, to whom we remain extremely grateful for his knowledge and great enthusiasm.

This year is the 27th consecutive year that the event has been a round of a BTRDA Championship.

The event still utilises the classic WRC stages on the Epynt Ranges together with the Monument, Crychan and Halfway Forest complexes. These stages are renowned as being some of the best stages in the country.

The Rally Headquarters remain at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, which will again be used for servicing similar to last year, giving competitors more room and to allow time to change the stage layouts.

Recent events in Scotland highlight the need for us all to remember that Motorsport can be dangerous and we encourage all spectators to carefully consider their vantage point and bear in mind the Safety advice within this programme and on display at the entrances to the stages. If the Safety Cars move you, take their advice and reconsider your vantage point. We ask that spectators respect the marshals, abuse will not be tolerated – We will cancel stages and name and shame if necessary.

We will make it clear that those representing the Media they have no right to stand in an area that we deem to be dangWerous, those Media accredited by the event will be clearly identified and again stages may be delayed or cancelled and we will name and shame! We wish you all an enjoyable, successful and safe day’s motor sport.

Neil, Clerk of the Course and the Organising Team

NICKY GRIST’S WELCOME

I hope you all have another great day watching the rallying on the Nicky Grist Stages. I have found that it is on this rally that the championships reach a turning point and the ones who win here go on to win their championships. This gives and added level of anticipation when watching.

I am also delighted to announce the inaugural Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge. There is no other challenge similar to this anywhere in the UK, and will be able to finally give us a definitive answer to who is the best national rally driver in the UK. My thanks to Ravenol UK for their support and partnership on this challenge and I look forward to many years with them.

And finally, we are all aware of the tragedy that occurred on the Jim Clark. Don’t let anything like that happen here on the Nicky Grist Stages – it is down to you and I know you will take care and select safe locations to view and take imagery from.

So, stay safe and have a great day’s rallying.

iNformatioN oN spectator areasWe welcome all spectators to the designated Spectator Areas on and around the Epynt Ranges. Admission is only by purchase of a spectator programme (all monies going to local charities via Brecon Rotary Club and Tirabad Village Hall), which will be available as you enter any of the areas.

Military activity will be taking place on the Epynt Ranges throughout the weekend when the rally is taking place. At this sensitive time for the military, it is imperative that all of us use the Ranges sensibly and keep to the areas we have been allowed to use. Spectators being inconsiderate, driving poorly or attempting to watch the rally at points other than those that have been published could seriously affect rallying on MOD land in the future. At all times, please heed any requests from the marshals.

ss1 &ss5 moNumeNt Please approach from Garth and follow the Spectator Arrows on to Mabians Way and park as directed. DO NOT SPECTATE BY THE JUMPS THIS IS A PROHIBITED AREA. Do not enter the Forest at any other location. The Car Park will take you to a downhill hairpin right.

the Nicky grist stages designated charity

Wales Air Ambulance is an all Wales charity providing emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries.

their missioN

It is their mission to aid the relief of sickness and injury, and the protection of human life, by the provision of an air ambulance service across Wales.

their VisioN

It is their vision to provide a 24-hour air ambulance operation, and continually strive for an outstanding air ambulance service available to everyone in Wales. Each helicopter can be launched within 3 minutes of receiving an emergency call and utilizing the 3 bases a helicopter can be with a person in under 20 minutes.

Why are they Needed?

The charity’s three helicopters are confronted with a diverse and challenging landscape. With over 8,000 sq. miles of remote countryside, bustling towns and cities, vast mountain ranges, and 800 miles of coastline as well as a widely scattered population there many in Wales who live or play in isolated locations, far from a major or specialist hospital. In urban areas, traffic congestion and collisions can significantly delay treatment when on a road ambulance. For these reasons, there is a recognised need for our three helicopters on active duty 365 days a year.

A service we hope to never use, but we cannot deny our sport is a dangerous one.

We all love to rally here in Wales. And it is partly the pitting ourselves against the adverse conditions that Epynt offers that brings us back year on year. Yet if the worst occurs and we need the support of medical specialists, it is those same adverse conditions that hamper us getting the help quickly - and each moment we wait becomes more critical and means a longer time in recovery. The Welsh Air Ambulance could then make all the difference to us. So rather than wait until we need them – they need £6 MILLION a year to keep running – so dig deep and ensure they are still running for many years to come.

THANK YOU.

Page 17

Page 18: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2014

Putting on an exciting and stimulating challenge for all the competitors’ is the priority for Nicky and the organising team of the Quinton Motor Club, with the aim to make each year better than the last. But without the support of hundreds of people there would not even be a rally.

Not only are the competitors attracted back year after year, but also many hundreds of spectators descend upon this rally and it is the responsibility of the Rally Team to make every assurance that all aspects of each stage are safe to allow the entrants to run.

So, if you have ever wondered what all those cars are doing travelling along each stage before and after each stage is run here is a quick breakdown…

the duty of orgaNiser’s safety cars

To begin, a stage needs to be set up prior to its running and this involves a number of things - the start controls, the barriers to all open road sections, the arrows for the competitors to follow the route at all areas where there could be confusion, barriers to prevent users of the forest who may have no idea a rally is being held, selection of the best marshal points, position of the safety crews and radio officer are just a few of the decisions that need to be made and implemented. And all this needs to be in place and ready well ahead of the arrival of the spectators and crews. Without this preparation, chaos would reign for both the positioning of the spectators in safe and exciting locations as well as for the cars about to set off on the stage.

The planning for the running of the stages starts with identifying the best time for the Stage Commander (SC) to venture through the stage and check that everything has been prepared and, if necessary, inform any Post Marshal of further requirements. For example, all the tracks for walkers through the forest sections need to be closed and clearly marked – the last thing any rally needs is for the unwary to accidently enter the stage. A safety plan for every stage is written long before the rally date and the SC uses this to check everything has been completed. Then the MSA official and Forestry Commission representative sign off the route as having been checked and is ready.

At the time of the SC checking the stage many spectators will have already arrived and chosen their spot for the day, and this will give the SC an opportunity to review that everyone is in a safe viewing position. If you have been requested to move, it is because the SC is aware that the chosen location is one of high risk of an out of control car landing there. For many it is quite a shock to see how far an out of control vehicle can travel and in an incredibly short time, faster than a spectator could move out of the way!

Page 18

Page 19: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2014

Operation Nicky Grist Stages

safety cars

The MSA through its general regulations lays down the requirements for route management including the requirement to comply with the laws of the land.

This involves Safety Cars traveling the route prior to the competing cars attempting the special stages. These vehicles are clearly marked and are equipped with flashing lights, sirens and PA systems (except “0” Car) and are in radio contact with Radio Control, via the MSA Safety Frequency, as well as each other via a secondary frequency with the Clerk of the Course car able to hear and respond to both frequencies.

The safety cars drive through the special stages before the first competitor car can set off as a final sign off that everything is ready and all the bullet points laid out in the safety plan are still in place – it has been known for random walkers to take down the route barriers or have opened gates the SC car has seen as closed, and given all clear.

the cc 3. safety car The Safety Inspection Cars then run each special stage following a planned timetable approximately 2 hours before the first competing car’s scheduled time at the start TC (Time Control). Their role is to track possible route problems, so the closing of all junctions and the correct signposting in all prohibited areas. Again they are equipped with radio and mobile phone for immediate contact to the Clerk of the Course in the event of any problem they have spotted.

chief timekeeperApproximately 90 minutes before the first competing car the Chief Timekeeper will visit each stage and stage control to deliver the timing equipment and ensure it is set up correctly.

cc 2. chief marshalThe CC2 Chief Marshal then drives through each special stage approximately 1 hour before the first rally car is due. Its role is to check whether all warning signs, radio point marshals and safety marshals are in place. When all is confirmed as prepared they inform Rally Control of the stage’s readiness.

clerk of the courseAs the one in overall command and with final responsibility for opening the rally on his shoulders, he enters the stage approximately 30 minutes before the first car is due, according to the length and particulars of each special stage. If any changes have occurred since the last car travelled the route, he is the one who is responsible in ensuring the course is safe for both spectators and cars. Ultimately, if anything does go wrong after he has given the all clear and opened the stage and so he is the one that has to take full responsibility and it is the crews, the organisers, the MSA, Forestry Commission and MOD who look to him to give account and prove that he did everything possible to make the stage safe. In a worse-case scenario, if it is seen that he was lacking in any way there is always the potential he could be arrested and prosecuted, if it can be proved he did not carry out his job correctly.

Page 19

Page 20: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2014

Page 20

safety officerHe enters the stage up to 30 minutes

before the first car is due and often follows the C.of C. car to check the stage condition as well as the

location of Rescue/Recovery/Medical Crews.

cc 1 spectator safetyApproximately 20 minutes before the first car is due the Spectator Safety Officer will traverse the stage, ensuring that spectators are still in suitable viewing places and move and advise where necessary.

cc 0 car The 0 car, driven by an experienced rally crew, often one of Britain’s rally celebrities, will run each special stage following a scheduled timetable approximately 10 minutes before the first car is due to start, according to the length and particulars of each special stage. This crew prepare marshals and spectators for the first official competitor. Driven at competitive speed, it is not competing in the Rally as such, but is the last safety car before the first car to arrive.

This may seem to be an excessive number of cars all checking the route, but it is surprising how many times a barrier is removed, a spectator moves back to the location they have just been removed from, or the condition of the stage has changed, as happened on the Wydean Rally earlier this year, when a number of trees came down due to the weather conditions between the time the first safety car travelled the stage and the ‘0’ car travelled through . As an added verification that the safety on the stage has been carried out many of

our course cars carry video cameras, recording each 10

ccc sWeeper car

“Sweeping” vehicles are seen at the end of the stage after the last competing car has travelled through, checking that there are no immobilised cars still within the stage. I am sure Sara Williams and Tad Evans would not have been pleased if they had been left in the ditch and the stage closed, when they came off the road on the Severn Valley Stages! The Sweeper car then reports to the Chief Safety Officer at Rally Control and any necessary actions are then taken over by Rally Control. The Sweeper Car also collects all lists and check sheets from controls and radio point marshals.

No stage controls close unless informed to do so by the sweeping vehicle who radio’s through to the Clerk of the Course that they see no area that needs action. It is then the Clerk of the Course who then gives the authorisation to close the stage.

All course cars report by radio the moment they start and finish each Special Stage so that all are aware of their location on the stage.

Vehicles in reserve are available at each specival stage start to function as a road closing car should a stage be delayed or stopped for any reason whatsoever.

The cars make a good marker to keep you in touch with the status of the stage and how long it will be before a stage is opened and closed. So give them a wave as they go by.

Since retiring from professional rallying, Nicky Grist has spent his time dedicated to improving the rally experience for competitors, organisers and spectators across all levels of the sport. Apart from mentoring a number of very talented young rally drivers and co-drivers, Nicky has spent time with the MSA and FIA t as an advisor, and now looks at ways he can use his experience at the top of the sport to enhance all aspects of rallying.

After sponsoring the Nicky Grist Stages for a number of years now Nicky came to realise that there was no one day shoot out that decided who was the best rally driver in the UK. The question was how to work out how to put together the one day shoot out so that everyone was eligible and had a chance of proving themselves as the best.

Nicky started by partnering with the premier lubricant company Ravenol, and together they set out the plan that has become the Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge, which the Nicky Grist Stages organisers are delighted to have as part of their rally.

So, what is the Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge?

It is a one day event which is open to all classes. The Clerk of the Course for the Nicky Grist Stages has worked out the mean average time penalty for each class based on a number of previous year’s events. This average time penalty is known as the ATP. The winner will be decided on the biggest percentage decrease in their class ATP. We are aware that there will be some times when the ATP will be slower than the average, perhaps due to inclement weather conditions, so then the smallest percentage difference to their class ATP will be deemed the winner.

Nicky “There is nothing else like this in Britain at the moment for rally drivers and will be an intensely exciting one day, all in, shoot out over some of the best stages on offer in Britain. And Ravenol coming forward as the prize givers has been immense giving all drivers a really fantastic prize to aim for. But most of all we will be able to name the Best National Rally Driver in the UK”

Brian Chase, Managing Director of Ravenol UK, is very enthusiastic. “We are delighted to be working together with Nicky on this project. The Challenge is all about supporting British Motorsport at club level, something we at Ravenol are very keen to be involved in.”

And the prize on offer – well, we have already intimated that it is the largest on offer at national level rallying. Ravenol UK are putting forward up to 8 paid entries in to the 2015 BTRDA Rally Series and up to £3000 of Ravenol products to use through the year. In addition, P1 Racewear has designed bespoke suits for the driver and co-driver to wear next season, as the Best National Rally Driver in the UK.

This means that you are all in for a treat watching not only the championship battles, but also the battle for the Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge to be crowned the Best national Rally Driver in the UK.

Enjoy!

1400CHAMPIONSHIP

One Ten

ONE BTRDA RALLY - SEVERAL WINNERS

The British Trial & Rally Drivers Associations BTRDA Rally series sees the competition reach the two thirds point of the championship season on this sixth round, the Nicky Grist Stages. Intriguingly the Nicky Grist Stages incorporates another prize to spice up this already ultra-competitive rally in the form of the Ravenol Nicky Grist Challenge which is by far the best prize ever in national rallying

One additional question is now being asked of the competitors on this rally, namely -

Who is the Best National Rally Driver in the UK?

Whilst ALL drivers in any class are eligible to win this additional award, their focus will also be upon their own championship class battles and when, in finishing, they can add to their existing points total in the BTRDA championship table.

As intriguing a question as ever, who is likely to be crowned REIS - BTRDA Gold Star Champion at the end of the season? Proving that consistency works, Russell Thompson has continued to win high scoring points in finishing all of the previous 5 rounds and now leads the championship standings overall. His 5th place on the opening round, the Wyedean, from a starting seeded position of 19, indicates his high levels of skill and endeavour. There will be many twists and turns in this top class battle still before the season ends, particularly with 3rd placed Stephen Petch, now gathering momentum after his failure on SS1 of the Wyedean, and Steve Perez in 6th having joined the battle on round three, both of whom are in more purposeful WRC type cars. The star of the show however at this moment must surely be Matthew Robinson who has piloted his 2 wheel drive historic class Ford Escort Mk 2 into 2nd place overall, just 2 points off the overall joint lead.

It is therefore no surprise to see Robinson leading, the BTRDA Silver Star Championship by the considerable margin of 47 points from Jon

Ballinger (99 points), Nick Dobson (95 points) and Sacha Kaked (82 points).

The Morris Lubricants BTRDA 1400 Championship emphasises the need for

continuous high scoring reliable finishes with both Marcel Freling (118 points) and Ryan Weston (111 points) having each finished the previous five rounds. Lying in 3rd place, and playing catch up, is Clive Anstey on 92 points following his retirement on SS4 of the Malcom Wilson. Anstey will now be on a charge to recover those lost points.

Robinson (100 points) obviously leads the overall BTRDA Historic Cup, again by a considerable margin. The battle for 2nd place in this class is however a tight and severely contested one with Rex Ireland (49 points) narrowly leading Sean Edwards by 2 points, both drivers again competing in the ubiquitous Ford Escorts.

The BTRDA Rally First Championship has been running successfully for six years and continues to provide the most affordable option for competitors who want to compete on the best one day forest stage rallies in the UK. It is open to the most commonly available vehicles in the UK that require muwch reduced preparation and running costs and therefore attractive to those needing an affordable option with a limited budget. Competitors confirm using a minimal number of tyres in a season and just a tank of pump fuel on some events. These characteristics do not make it anymore less competitive and three drivers, Carl Davies, Neil Andrew and Rory Jones are now only separated by 5 points in the top 1-2-3 overall classification of this class after 5 rounds.

Adding to the large variety of marques seen in this championship is the attraction

of the competition between identical machinery. The MG ZR Rally Challenge 2014 is therefore a true test of the drivers’ ability when compared to his/her peers. Marcel Freling is the man to catch in this class having only dropped 2 points from the previous 5 rounds. Jayne Auden is however chasing hard, awaiting a slip up by Freling and she is just 16 points further back in 2nd place.

Page 22

Page 23: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2014

The Nicky Grist Stages is also the 5th round of the Pirelli MSA Welsh Forest Rally Championship which currently sees Luke Francis leading on 87 points with Alex Allingham a further 9 points behind. Francis is also lying in 7th place overall in the REIS - BTRDA Gold Star Championship having scored points on three previous rounds and is more than likely to finish on the leader board today.

Such is the attraction of the BTRDA Series that competitors will be able to score points in other championships including the Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship, the ANWCC Forest Stage Championship, the ANWCC Historic Stage Rally Championship and the FMP Rally Challenge 2014.

Many clubmen will be looking to gain points from this rally towards their individual in house club championships and the sub classes within the major classes are of appeal to them. The organising club, Quinton MC, have several of their own club members also competing. One such competitor is Steve Deeley who, in his first season of driving on stage rallies, finds himself in first position in the Gold Star Class B10 for over 1400cc up to and including 1600cc rally cars.

For those of you who are interested in keeping a check of the different class of vehicles that pass by, here is the relevant section from the regulations for the Nicky Grist Stages that specifies all of the classes –
