Ni-Cr-Mo alloys such as Alloy C276 are extremely corrosion resistant in bulk form. However, they were not designed for thermal spray processes. The conventional spray alloys available do not often meet the expected performance of Ni-Cr. Mo alloys. Nicko-Shield 200 was designed specifically to function in the twin wire arc spray process, and thus provides the true corrosive benefits of Ni-Cr-Mo materials in thermal spray coating form.

WHY NICKO-SHIELD 200 OUTPERFORMS ALLOY C276 Nicko-Shield 200 produces the most reliable corrosion resistant arc spray coating which replicates or outperforms Alloy C276 plate in applicable environments.

1. Coating Integrity: The Nicko-Shield 200 forms a lower oxide, higher bond strength coating in comparison to oth-er thermal spray materials. Notice the increase level of oxide content in the alloy C276 coating in comparison to the Nicko-Shield coating. This clean coating structure enables the Nicko-Shield 200 to have high bond strength of 10,000+ psi (70+ MPa). Also notice how the oxide content of Nicko-Shield 200 is stable over a variety of spray angles. The true benefit of Nicko-Shield 200 is the consistency in quality over a large application window.

2. Consistency: The functional performance of a thermal spray coating is less related to the coating quality when sprayed in a controlled laboratory, and more related to the coating quality when sprayed in the field. Especially when sprayed by hand, the spray parameters (including spray angle, spray distance, and traverse rate) can vary widely. A coating which varies in quality over the application window will not perform. The coating quality of Nicko-Shield 200 remains high over a wide application window. Nicko-Shield 200 is “applicator friendly”.

Notice how the Nicko-Shield 200 coating retains exceptionally high bond strength, 10,000+ psi well after the perfor-mance of Alloy C276 drops off.

3. Self-Sealing: The porosity of every thermal spray coatings are the weakest link despite the corrosion material in the coating itself. Minor defects which are present in every coating are pathways for corrosion which allow the coating to be effectively bypassed. The result is typically coating failure in the form of spalling. Nicko-Shield 200 is unique in that it possesses the ability to self seal in highly corrosive environments and clog any micro-pores. Self sealing is the most effective way to form an impermeable corrosion resitant barrier between the substrate and the environment.

SUGGESTED APPLICATIONS

Nicko-Shield 200 coatings are suggested for use in any applications where corrosion resistance is required. The revolutionary im-provement in consistent coating quality will typically result in increased corrosion performance and coating lifetime over Alloy C276 and other conventional Ni-Cr-Mo alloys. Specific applications include: Refinery Vessels Chemical Processing Vessels Boiler Tubes

Nicko-Shield 200 forms a much more metallic coating than Alloy C276. Alloy C276 is a highly corrosive material in the metallic form, however it quickly forms oxides when thermally sprayed. The oxidation resistance of Nicko-Shield 200 enables the de-sired fully metallic C276 coating, and therefore performs properly as a corrosion resistant coating.

The difference is clear with the naked eye, as the coating color of Nicko-Shield 200 is light grey, the color of metal, and the coating color of Alloy C273 is darker and blacker, the color of oxides.

HOW NICKO-SHIELD OUTPERFORMS ALLOY C276

Notice in the micrographs below how the Nicko-Shield 200 forms much less oxide content, the splat interfaces are less contaminated with oxide layers, and the coating splats themselves are generally larger and more interconnected.
