Based on the Strategic Planning initiative and previous member request, the Program Committee is pleased to present a new opportunity to include qualified
Distributor/Fabricators (D/F) in the Convention Expo. Traditionally, the Expo guidelines limited the ability to exhibit to only Belting Manufacturers and to Component Manufacturers as follows:
Display Guidelines
Per the description of your membership classification, only products manufactured by your company can be displayed. Products purchased from other manufacturers cannot be displayed.
Belting Manufacturer
A substantial portion of its business activity is the manufacture of conveyor and flat power transmission belting for sale primarily to distributor/fabricators.
Component Manufacturer
Is engaged in the manufacture of material, parts, machinery, or equipment that comes in enhances/changes belt, for sale primarily to distributor/fabricators.
The Program Committee was asked to consider adding qualified D/F as a third classification. After debate and review, the Committee approached the Board of Directors with a proposal to expand the guidelines. Included in this proposal is the definition for the new D/F classification and a structured evaluation process whereby D/Fs would validate that 65% of their products’ sales are to distribution. NIBA’s Association Management Firm (Svinicki Association Management, Inc.) will act as the third party which will review the confidential information submitted by each D/F wishing to exhibit. The new text to define the D/F category in the display guidelines would be as follows:
Distributor/Fabricator
Products which the majority of the total sales of that product is sold to distributors can be displayed.
In Indianapolis in 2016, we will begin a two-year trial period to include D/Fs in the Convention Expo. The exhibit area is large, and will provide adequate space to accommodate the expected additional demand. For reference, there were 87 booth spaces in 2015. Indy will provide room for 112 spaces.
More information and detailed instructions on how to qualify will be online in 2016, and Expo materials will be distributed in March instead of May to allow additional time to qualify.
This is a great opportunity for NIBA members, and we look forward to a record showing in 2016 in Indy!

Letter from the President
As 2015 winds down, it offers the opportunity to pause and reflect on the year and all which it offered to each of us. I live in Atlanta, Georgia where there was a sports writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Furman Bisher, who
passed away in 2012. Mr. Bisher would pen an article each Thanksgiving on what he was thankful for each year. This was something I looked forward to reading each Thanksgiving morning as the family was together preparing for a great feast and time together. I would like to share with you what I am thankful for.
• I’m thankful for having an organization which allows its members to congregate each year at beautiful locations and enjoy each other’s company.
• I’m thankful to be able to listen and learn from Keynote speakers each year at the Annual NIBA Convention, especially this year. Thanks Joe Thiesmann.
• I’m thankful to be working for a com-pany that allows me to volunteer my time and resources for NIBA.
• I’m thankful for the “Open Bar” at the opening night dinner.
• I’m thankful for the Members of NIBA al-lowing me to serve as President in 2015 and to participate within leading this fine organization.
• I’m thankful for Instagram, Twitter, Face-Book and the Social Media which allows us to stay in touch between conventions, committee meetings and board meetings.
• I’m thankful to the NIBA Board of Direc-tors who guide our organization with integrity and strength.
• I’m thankful to know so many people within the belting industry and for the friendships formed throughout the many years.
• I’m thankful for the Golf Chairperson who has to arrange the pairings for the tournament.
• I’m thankful for the many volunteers who devote their time and resources to see that the association is run properly.
• I’m thankful for the training opportunities offered within NIBA.
• I’m thankful for the photos taken each year at the convention and other events.
• I’m thankful that NIBA offers a scholar-ship program to allow others to advance their knowledge to serve others.
• I’m thankful for SAMI, Jennifer, Sandy, Haley and the others who support NIBA with their hard work and creative efforts.
• I’m thankful for my family, Ingrid, Clark and Patrick for supporting and loving me through out this journey as President of NIBA.
• I’m thankful Tom Pientok is President in 2016, all the best!
And most of all, I’m thankful for you, the members, who support and participate within NIBA to make it what it is today; a tremendous resource within the belting industry, worldwide. I wish each of you a safe, happy holiday season and a Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
John Shelton NIBA President 2015 Belt Power LLC

What You Need to Know About Thermoplastic CleatsBy Gregg Hanson, 2015 Education/Technical Committee, Apache Inc
Flights, paddles, and pushers are all different names for cleats on a conveyor belt. Cleats are upright profiles attached to the top surface of belts to increase load
capacity on incline systems.
Belt cleats come in different sizes, shapes, colors, and compounds. Generally, the cleat must be made of the same compound as the belt in order to achieve a good bond for long service life. There are two broad categories of compounds — rubber and thermoplastic. In this article we are talking about thermoplastic cleats.
In the belting world, PVCs, RMVs, and urethanes comprise the majority of thermoplastics used. These compounds, when precisely heated, will “melt” and then fuse together as they cool. When properly done, these two heated surfaces will become as one. This is how cleats on most lightweight belts are bonded.
Types of Bonding
Thermal Welding: With this method hot air is forced against the cleat and belt, and pressure is applied to ensure 100% bonding — a simple procedure performed on very sophisticated machinery. This method is the fastest, most economical bonding technique, and is used whenever feasible.
HF Welding: High Frequency (HF) welding is also known as Radio Frequency (RF) welding. This method also fuses the cleats to the belt by heating them, however the heat is
generated internally as the HF excites/heats the molecules in the cleat and belt. Stronger bonds and intricate cleat patterns are possible using this method. Special, custom tooling is often required for HF welding.
Cold Bond: This is simply cementing the cleat to the belt. While a tried and true method, cold bonding is the last option we recommend. It’s used only when the cleat layout pattern cannot be produced using either welding method.
Cleat StylesT-Cleats: These have a broad base, and are at a 90 degree to the belt surface. Heights range from 1/2” to 4” tall. Usually these are a PVC compound.
C-Cleats: Also known as a “scoop cleat,” this is the same as a T-cleat except the cleat is “bent” over to 65 degrees from belt surface. This cleat is available up to 3” high.
Lug Cleats: A lug cleat is a common term to describe a square cross section or when using a V-guide as a cleat. Most sizes are available in PVC and urethane.
Thin Line and Footless Cleats: Designed for small pulley conveyors, these cleats are generally only available in urethane and use the HF welding method. Although thinner than PVC T-cleats, these cleats are very durable and cut resistant. Thin line and foot less cleats are available in white, black, blue, beige, green, and clear depending on style/size of cleat required.
ModificationsCleats can be modified by indenting, making cutouts/notches, or tapering the ends. There is no “standard” cleat pattern. Every cleated belt is a custom design driven by the requirements of the conveyor system.

As part of the early planning steps in organizing the NIBA/PTDA Joint Industry
Summit in 2017, members of each association who will be on the planning taskforce have been invited to observe and participate in the other’s annual event to get a feel for how the style and conduct both differ and parallel.
The NIBA delegation was comprised of Vernon Smith of Universal Belting Resource who will be President of NIBA in 2017, Brian Schachner who will be the key planning contact since he would be Program Chair and Tom Wujek of Flexco who will be one of the four additional appointed NIBA representatives. Tom brings the perspective of being a recent NIBA Past President who was involved since the time the decision was made to hold a joint event, and unique perspectives on the mutual benefits of both NIBA and PTDA as Flexco is a member of both organizations.
NIBA and PTDA are committed to putting together an outstanding program pulling the best and most valued elements from both events with the end result being to provide new business opportunities for all attendees.
While the majority of events are planned together, the need to conduct separate association business was recognized. Only two events will be held separately. Each association utilizes their first timer session to greet their new members, first time attendees and other guests and orient them to the association and the event. The lunch and business meetings on Friday will be held in separate rooms so each association has the opportunity to review their committee and Board activities, present awards and discuss association specific matters. (Naturally, the committee meetings on Wednesday and the closing Board meetings on Sunday will be conducted separately as well.)
In addition to the immense value members report receiving from participation in the annual Convention, the taskforce is hopeful that members will experience even more in this experimental year. Providing this out-of-the box event experience is intended to open the door to many new business connections as opportunities can exist in unexpected connections.

Interested in Hosting a Technical Seminar at Your Facility?
NIBA currently holds 3-5 Technical Seminars annually, and each host company is given two (2) complimentary admissions for that event. The Education/Technical Committee is seeking member company sites interested in hosting future events within and outside of the US. A detailed outline of the ideal location has been developed. Please download and review to determine if your company may be a viable host.
niba.org/index.php?cID=1350
If you would like to submit your company for consideration as a host, please send an e-mail to [email protected] detailing the information requested in the document and including photos of the training/meal areas of your company and links to recommended hotels along with input on evening dining and entertainment ideas. The Education/Technical Committee will review submissions to find the best fit for each seminar’s needs.
The 2015 edition of 3T was held at the Crowne Plaza-Airport in Indianapolis. This year we had 26
people register, with a range of Industry experience of 3 months to 28 years.
Day one was our classroom session, that covered all the traditional topics, industry standards, belt construction, transition distances, load points, housekeeping, and splice considerations.
Our Quarry visit was on day two, that allowed all participants to see firsthand the difference between Industry Standards, and the “real” world. The site visit always gives us talking points to wrap up our training session.
We enjoyed having all NIBA member classifications in attendance this year. A special thanks to the following for investing in our association, and their employees.
Accurate Industrial, All State Belting, Applied Industrial, Bi-State Rubber, ContiTech-NAFTA, Flexco, LewisGoetz, Nashville Rubber & Gasket, Price Rubber, RGA-Rubber & Gasket Co., Rapat Corporation, Transco Industries, and Van Gorp Corporation.
This training session received high marks, and would be recommended to others from all in attendance.
The Staff at SAMI, always does a great job handling all the details (food, lodging, transportation) to make this so smooth.
On behalf of NIBA , and the Edu/Tech Committee, I would like to thank Mike Cremeens, Shaw-Almex, and Dick McConnell, Flexco for being Instructors. It has been my privilege to assist these industry experts the last few years.
