NIAGARA UNIVERSITY offers a distinctive education of the mind, body, heart and soul. Founded in the Catholic and Vincentian tradition, ours is a high-quality, rigorous education, but it is an experience that goes much deeper. In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of charities, ours is a whole education – distinguished by academic excellence and grounded in ethics, values and service to others. At Niagara, we are about success but, even more, we are about meaningful success. We make a difference in the lives of our students. And they go on to make a difference in the lives of others.
This is an education that touches the deepest and part of you.

Advanced Learning
Hands-on experience is a hallmark of a Niagara education. Here, a communication studies faculty member works with students on The Ridge Report, a university news program that is 100 percent student created and produced. Niagara students have access to the latest equipment and technologies, such as state-of-the-art TV production studios, model pre-K through 12 classrooms, a high-tech financial services lab and more.
At Niagara University, active, hands -on learning is and well.
Opportunities for experiential learning abound in every major, giving our students an invaluable practical perspective as they learn by doing.
From collaborative projects to internships, from service learning to study abroad, you’ll be immersed in real-world learning at Niagara.

Undergraduate Research
Niagara students work side by side with their professors on a variety of collaborative research projects. Research, such as the genetic exploration and tracking of the local salamander population, is an excellent way for undergraduate students to gain practical, high-level research experience, further setting them apart as they prepare to enter graduate schools and careers.

Niagara’s emphasis on a total education helps students to become individuals who are ready and able to handle life’s changes and decisions.
An Experiential Approach
Using the Castellani Art Museum as an on-campus resource, elementary education student Tracey Bayer is taking a hands-on approach to her learning. Starting freshman year, Niagara students are actively immersed in their areas of study. Whether it’s designing a colorful elementary-age lesson plan or working on other projects within their curriculum, opportunities abound in every major.
Learning is intentionally integrated across the whole day – not just in the classroom, but outside it as well.24/7
Valuable learning goes on inside our walls and outside as well.
Niagara students collaborate on research supported by grants, ranging from the Great Lakes Protection Fund and the National Park Service to Niagara’s own fund for student research.
Our leadership program equips students with the attitudes, skills and experiences needed to lead and excel in life.
Students plan and lead more than 100 campus events each semester, which helps them to develop organization, team-building and other leadership skills.
Valuable learning goes on inside our walls and outside as well.
Learning by Doing
Niagara’s unique location, just steps from the Niagara River Gorge, provides both a scenic setting and natural classroom forbiology and environmental studies students. Here, biology professor Bill Edwards, Ph.D., works with students in one of Niagara’s many natural, living laboratories, where students are able to learn science by going out and doing science.
The Vincentian spirit is a regard for the dignity and worth of all human beings, and it is a compassion that is displayed each day at Niagara.
Our Vincentian tradition is evidenced in our active service to others, but also in a caring, inclusive attitude within our own campus community.
Here, becomes ingrained in your soul; it becomes a part of you.
Serving Others
Helping out in the community is an essential part of the Niagara experience. Whether it’s preparing income taxes for the elderly, serving food at a local soup kitchen, or building a house as part of Habitat for Humanity, as seen here with criminal justice major Skylar Fairchild, Niagara students are actively engaged inreaching out to those less fortunate.

primary research. They pack their bags and study abroad. They pursue internships and co-op
experiences. They participate in service-learning projects. It’s no fluke that our graduates
are so highly sought after by graduate schools and employers. Niagara graduates are ready for
the real world because they’ve experienced the real world.

A Vincentian tradition of service, responsibility and leadership
St. Vincent de Paul was a 17th century Catholic priest dedicated to serving
the poor and oppressed. The patron saint of charities, St. Vincent was the first
great community organizer, as he inspired and organized his contemporaries to
respond compassionately to society’s basic needs. It is in this Vincentian tradition that
Niagara University seeks to inspire its students to serve others, especially the poor, in
local communities and across the world. Our mission is to shape not just servants, but
servant-leaders, who will then, in the spirit of St. Vincent, go out and make a difference
in their own communities, inspiring others to lead lives of compassion and service.
34The number of years that students from the College of Busi- ness Administration have helped members of the Niagara Falls community file their state and federal income tax.
The faculty, staff and administration of Niagara are also deeply connected to the community, providing count-less hours of service to over 300 organiz-ations in Western New York.
The concept of service is popular across universities today, but Niagara has been a national leader in service learning since the 1950s.
With their service experiences, Niagara graduates leave as whole persons, making them distinctive and attractive to future employers.
Serving Others
During the past academic year, Niagara students provided over 1,000 hours of
community service per week. They serve as tutors in local school districts, as volunteers
in more than 60 social service organizations, and as part of ReNU Niagara, a
community outreach partnership that coordinates service programs in Niagara Falls.
LEARN AND SERVE NIAGARALearn and Serve Niagara focuses on service learning – service activities that are built into course curricula to help students experience how concepts they are learning in the classroom can be applied to the actual needs of a community. More than 70 classes have a service requirement, and education majors routinely log thousands of hours of volunteer teaching in local schools.
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM (NUCAP)NUCAP organizes a wide variety of activities to aid the local
community. Students invite city youths to skating and swim-ming parties; others volunteer in local nursing homes and soup kitchens. NUCAP is a great resource for student clubs, especially because each one is responsible for conducting a certain number of service hours each semester.
BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST (BASIC)BASIC sends busloads of students and campus ministers every semester break to spend a week immersed in fulfilling the university’s Vincentian mission by serving disadvantaged people in poor neighborhoods. They have traveled from Panama to
Philadelphia to New Orleans, working in local schools, at homeless shelters and nursing homes, and anywhere else there is a need.
REV. JOSEPH L. LEVESQUE, C.M. INSTITUTE FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT This institute reinforces Niagara’s commitment to the region by strengthening and forming new town and gown relationships. The institute oversees Border Community SERVICE and ReNU Niagara, two of NU’s flagship com-munity-minded programs, and collaborates with Learn and Serve Niagara to create meaningful service-learning opportunities for students.
