Looking about as calm as if he were on the practice green, young John Konsek of Buffalo, the reigning Big 10 Champion from Purdue University, expertly stroked a pressur-ized seven-foot putt on the 18th green to claim top honors in the Niagara Falls Country Club’s International Invitation Tournament.

With a huge gallery surrounding the well-trapped 18th green in approaching darkness, Konsek climaxed one of the most sensational comebacks in the history of Western New York Tournament play by sinking the putt that meant a stirring one-stroke victory over arch-rival Ward Wettlaufer, also of Buffalo.

Alex Porter, a Niagara Falls Country Club member, presented the Porter Cup. It was filled with champagne and the 40 players drank from it, a tradition that continuestoday.
