NHTSA Impaired Driving Update
June 2017
4th of July
Impaired Driving
Campaign
Materials
Americans love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks. But all too often the
festivities turn tragic on the nation's roads. This iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest
holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes. NHTSA’s Traffic Safety Marketing provides marketing
tools to fit local needs and objectives while partnering with other States, communities and organizations
to prevent drunk driving. Use the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign materials to remind people
that law enforcement will be looking for drunk drivers.
Additionally, the Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving
campaign reminds those celebrating the Fourth of
July to always plan ahead—designate a sober driver
or find another way to get home safely. Access
campaign materials here.

driving.

Traffic Safety Facts 2015 (DOT HS 812 384) The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Center for
Statistics & Analysis has published the 2015 Traffic Safety
Facts Annual Report, which presents data on fatal, injury,
and property-damage-only traffic crashes.
2015 Traffic Safety Factsheet Rural/Urban Comparison of Traffic
Fatalities (DOT HS 812 393) For this fact sheet, rural and urban
boundaries are determined by the State highway departments and
approved by the Federal Highway Administration. The State
highway departments use the U.S. Census Bureau’s rural and
urban boundaries. Of the 35,092 traffic fatalities, there were
17,114 (49%) that occurred in rural areas, 15,362 (44%) that
occurred in urban areas, and 2,616 (7%) that occurred in unknown
areas.
Evaluation of Responsible Beverage Service to Reduce Impaired
Driving by 21– to 34-Year-Old Drivers (DOT HS 812 398) Studies have
revealed that approximately half of intoxicated drivers had their last
drink at a licensed bar or restaurant. This study evaluated an
intervention that integrated outreach, responsible beverage service
(RBS) training, targeted enforcement and, as necessary, corrective
actions by law enforcement agencies. The immediate goal of the
intervention was to reduce the practice of over-serving alcohol and
serving alcohol to obviously intoxicated individuals in bars and
restaurants. The long-term goal was to reduce driving while
intoxicated (DWI) arrests and impaired driving crashes. A summary of
this report is available here through Traffic Tech.

Traffic Resource Center—Website Re-designed!
The National Center for State Courts team recently redesigned the Traffic Resource Center for Judges and
updated the content of the website. Among the updates is a new Constitutional Considerations page, which
lists and describes major cases from the Supreme Court that deal in some way with traffic, along with links to
the opinion in each case. The website's other resources, such as our collection of issue briefs and page about
Missouri v. McNeely and its progeny, remain on the site (though potentially in a different location than
before). We also still have physical copies of our issue brief compendium, which may be acquired by emailing
Greg Hurley at [email protected].

The Lifesavers Conference Planning Committee (LPC) is now accepting
speaker proposals for the 2018 Conference which will be held April 22-
24 in San Antonio, Texas. Proposals must be submitted via Lifesavers'
online portal and will be accepted until August 31, 2017. All speaker
proposals are carefully reviewed for their applicability to the Lifesavers
Conference audience with a particular focus on "research to practice"
and "vigorously evaluated programs."
Researchers, academicians, students, and practitioners are also welcome
to submit a poster via a separate application process in lieu of or in
addition to a speaker proposal; however, the same review process applies. The poster submission portal
will open this September.
