NGMS Intermediate Mandolin 8AI have been teaching mandolin for more

than 20 years all over Scotland and England in classes, workshops, festivals and residentials. I am passionate about

music and the mandolin and this, hopefully, comes across in my patient

method of teaching. The Intermediate class continues over

three terms from September to June. You should have at least a couple of years

on the mandolin, or at least that much experience on a related instrument.

The German composer Michael Praetorius worked as

an organist and choirmaster and was a prolific creator of

sacred music. But he also wrote a collection of 312

popular dances known as the Terpsichore. All the pieces were written for a “consort”

- small groups of instruments each playing a different part.

Dance de Roi (Michael Praetorius, 1571-1621) mandolin 1

This Renaissance piece was composed by the German composer Michael Praetoius and arranged by the American classical mandolinist Marilyn Mair. She says it “has a strong consistent beat, but the parts show an independence of rhythm that will make [it] challenging to put together. Good counting is necessary for all the players. And everyone has to learn to hear the composite rhythm of the piece. Play calmly, legato, but without tremolo. Keep your left-hand fingers down to

sustain each note for its full length. All 8th-notes should be considered pick-ups to the next quarter or half note, drawing the listeners’ attention to the gentle forward momentum central to the dance’s design. Contrasts in dynamics should occur naturally. You can repeat the piece several times, and you may want to vary tone color a bit between repetitions. Try having all players play near the bridge, for a sharper tone, or above the sound hole for a warmer “dolce” sound.”

This wonderful waltz was composed by the Georgia fiddler

Clayton McMichen (1900-1970). His first big success was when he

joined the legendary group Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers in

the mid-1920s. In 1931 he formed another popular band called The

Georgia Wildcats (along with guitarist Slim Bryant), as well as

performing and recording solo.
