Welcome to the Parish of Manuka, South CanberraFrom the Rector:For Australians, to describe someone as ‘down to earth’ is quite an accolade. Our collective intolerance for so-called ‘tall poppies’ is well-noted. We prefer our leaders not to lord it over us, but to mirror soemthing of ourselves back to us. The down to earthiness of God is indeed one of the distinctive features of our faith, proclaimed at Christmas and celebrated throughout the Epiphany Season. Jesus reveals to us the nature of the down to earth God. The Baptism of Christ, the festival we celebrate today, reminds us of the deep humiliation of Christ’s coming ‘down to earth’ - he came and identified himself with sinners. Jesus healed the sick, taught people to love God and each other, challenged injustice and corrupt structures in society, reached across barriers of race and religious belief, fed the physically and spiritually hungry, comforted the bereaved, embraced the untouchable and befriended the outcast, resisted the temptations of worldly power, violence and greed, and stood alongside those in need of love, forgiveness and mercy. He also gave of himself without limitation, even unto death, and in doing so overcame the dark power of death to destroy life and love. This is God’s manifestation to us of who God is and what God is like. Loving, healing, creative, merciful and forgiving. This is the God who came ‘down to earth’ so that we might be anything but down to earth.

Pax,

Benjamin Edwards, Rector of Manuka
