TWO GROUP 1’s KILTY LAD landed the first Group 1 race of 2011 when he led throughout in the Silver Chief final at The Meadows.

And weren’t Kellie and Brett Bravo over the moon when they collected the trophy after their dog had run an express 29.66 for the 525 metres trip.

He looked to be a ‘monty’, and he didn’t let anyone down.

I refer to grand campaigner, Satanic Cash, who took out the West End Draught Distance Championship at Angle Park, running the 731 metres in 43.44 for Deb and Bob Isaacson.

Angela Jackson prepares Bobby Boucheau, who won by 20 lengths and lowered the Sandown track record to 33.67 in the process, pruning five and a half lengths from Bling It On’s previous standard.

DURING the horrific floods in south-east Queensland mid-month there was one trainer that hired a chopper to get a greyhound to Wentworth Park in NSW.

But it didn’t end in a dream come true, as Dwyer and Desley Lennon’s Dashing Corsair could only finish runner-up to the Anthony Azzopardi trained Seek And Destroy in a steady 43.00 in the Association Cup final.

TO demonstrate what a good year is has been for SA’s top stayer, Satanic Cash annexed the 2010

Greyhound Of The Year award, according to Paul Rehmann, our SA correspondent.

Maybe they stretched the truth a tad, but it was reported that the world’s only female racecaller, Sarina O’Day was set to ply her trade at Angle Park’s Summer Chasing Carnival.

Not too sure about the word “only” in the advertising fodder, but Sarina certainly did add variety to the Angle Park’s January 20 meeting. .

Pessimism surrounded the Man In The Tree, who regretfully performed the last rites on Victorian Coursing as we know it.

I think our MITT was looking for an olive branch when he mentioned the hours and hours of voluntary work afforded to those meetings, thus keeping the basic grass track sport a viable ongoing concern.

Racing in superb form, Kilty Lad notched his second Group 1 race for the month when he took out the Adelaide Cup from Perfect Fancy and Penthouse, running the 515 metres trip in a slick 29.39 at Angle Park.

Paul Dolan was still coming to terms with the enormity of the devastating Queensland floods earlier in the month, and the extensive damage repair bills for those worst affected.

The bearded bloke said, “Racing people band together in times of need, so those badly affected can take solace from the fact that everyone is trying to assist.”

At the end of December last year a couple of races missed getting a write-up due to early printing deadlines.

To give more owners and trainers the chance of a Group victory, Sandown Park ran a second Laurels series for the ladies.

Current The Great Chase champ, Up And Away led them out and gained a race-winning break along the back straight.

Far too good, the Ann Sinnot owned, Graeme Bate trained racer downed Kalden Athena and Tonneli Bale in a fast 29.59.

Sale’s flagship event, the 650 metres Sale Cup was run and won by Symmetry, who led the last half of the feature final to defeat Sitka and Bobby Boucheau in 37.06 for Helen Ivers and trainer, Rob Britton. Major players: Group 1 Silver Chief 525 metres KILTY LAD – 29.66 for Kellie & Brett Bravo Group 3 West End Distance Championship – 731 metres SATANIC CASH – 43.44 for Deb & Bob Isaacson Group 3 Birthday Cup 405 metres COUNTRY SHARK – 22.85 for John Iwanyk Group 2 Gosford Gold Cup 515 metres TUIAKI – 29.91 for Neville Brown

Group 2 Cranbourne Cup 520 metres GOLD HERITAGE – 30.53 for Des & Yvonne Downing Group 2 Cyril Rowe Gold Plate 472 metres GRETA BALE – 26.16 for the Wheeler/Bate team Group 1 Adelaide Cup 515 metres KILTY LAD – 29.39 for Kelly Bravo Group 1 Association Cup 720 metres SEEK AND DESTROY – 43.00 for Anthony Azzopardi Group 3 Devonport Cup 452 metres ST. PIERRE – 25.55 for Debbie Cannan Group 2 Warragul Cup 460 metres EL GRAND SENOR – 25.57 for Carolyn Jones

Symmetry earned a tag as one of the most honest and hardest chasers going around in Victoria and deserved his Sale Cup success.

Greta Bale after winning the Cyril Rowe Gold Plate at Bulli.

OLIVE BRANCH DR. DENIS NAPTHINE, the Racing Minister in Victoria, hatched a $100,000,000 plan to get both harness and greyhound racing back to Wangaratta.

To not have harness and greyhound racing at Avian Park was a logistical mistake by the former Racing Minister.

Money has been thrown at a consultative feasibility study into both codes returning to their former glory, but essentially it wouldn’t or couldn’t occur for 12 months.

Folks, not long to wait, as that’s at the end of February 2012!

CANCELLED race meetings everywhere as people came to terms with the extremes of weather.

In Queensland the ‘killer’ floods monstered the south-east and parts of Brisbane, whilst further south there were bushfires aplenty.

There were numerous appeals for those adversely affected by the abovementioned disasters, whilst the local authorities were run off their legs in assisting the unfortunate victims, including animals.

Yeah, my old man was right when he said – fire and water can be man’s best friend or his worst enemy!

Sporting stars again pitched-in to assist the “Go The Pink Dog” promotion.

Archie Thompson and Bianca Chatfield threw their (collective) weight behind the Glenn McGrath organised Breast Cancer fundraiser, that GRV proudly supports each year.

Big race time over in the West, and Laurence Torpy let us know that High Earner lived right up to his namesake by winning the Perth Cup

(again), which bolstered his bank account by $210,000 to $502,000.

Later in the month he went on to land The Temlee at The Meadows, boosting his stakes to a new Australian level - $553,795 - eclipsing the 10-year record of Rapid Journey.

On the same bumper card at Cannington, Blue Lorian took out the Galaxy for Peter Whye and Brendan Wheeler.

And it was Blue Lorian that landed The Zoom Top at The Meadows late in the month.

AT GRV Awards Night, the Ken Carr Medal went to the MGRA’s hard-working Chairman, Eddie Caruana, whilst the Victorian Greyhound Of The Year was El Grand Senor, who had the trophy safely in his keeping as far out as October.

Allan Britton, who has a wealth of knowledge in the sport - he even went to race dogs in Macau with Rod Deakin many years ago - was inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Andrea Dailly grabbed the etched plaque for being dubbed Trainer of the Year.

R e s p e c t e d p h o t o gr ap h e r , Anthony Jeffress, coordinator for the Queensland Flood Relief Program, kept us fully updated on the state of play.

Racecaller and big night MC, Rob Testa tied the knot with the lovely Brooke Edwards at The Meadows.

GRV announced an increase to the country cups, with those Group 2 events now carrying a $40,000 winner’s cheque to align itself with AGRA’s minimum prizemoney requirement.

In Peter Pearson’s ‘On The Line’, it was first mentioned that Rob Brittton and Graeme Bate were preparing for a tilt at the upcoming

Irish Derby. They would be taking quite an entourage of handlers, etc., to perform the day to day regime on probably six of our top chasers. Both based in Lara, Bate and Britton had already discussed the logistics of the exercise, deciding to pool their resources. AS announced earlier on by GRV, coursing as we know it, would be abbreviated to just three meetings per annum in Victoria. Well, in its wisdom, GRV spun the hard-working coursing clubs an ultimatum, saying they needed more participation (nominations), or their fate would be sealed.

The response from owners and trainers around Victoria for the rest of the month was overwhelming.

DOWN on the Island State, Peter Staples wrote that the Launceston Cup had been run and won by outsider, Fisherman, from Mark Sutcliffe’s kennels.

IN NSW, Ron Arnold attended their Awards Night, letting us know that Elite Blue Size was named Greyhound Of The Year, whilst Tweed Heads legend, Harry Pledger took home the Allen Wheeler Medal.

Also on the huge night of entertainment , the McGrath Foundation’s “Go The Pink Dog” coffers were enhanced via an impromptu auction. Major players: Group 1 Perth Cup 530 metres HIGH EARNER – 30.37 for Christine Robartson & Kel Greenough Group 1 Sky Racing Galaxy 715 metres BLUE LORIAN – 41.97 for Peter Whye & Brendan Wheeler

EGS STAYS HOME CAROLYN JONES let us know that El Grand Senor was running out of time if he was to contest the quarter of a million dollar Golden Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park. Much speculation was pointed towards the fact that she had been reluctant to leave Victoria with EGS in the past, so why would she change her mind now.

A life as a couch potato, who serves a few bitches each year, would be the likely outcome if he did run out of time.

With a wealth of Group racing during March, there were many racers starting to ramp-up their track work.

T R I C O D E D A Y a t Cranbourne was again successful, with many people flocking to the South Gippsland Highway venue to watch all three codes strut their stuff.

In the greyhounds, the time honoured Victoria Cup took centre stage, with the in-form Shimaguni snaring the rich pickings for Jim Redenbach and the SGC Syndicate.

Pedrosa, who arrived in WA from NSW with trainer, Paul Stuart, won the prestigious WA Greyhound Of The Year award.

Man In The Tree reported that the ink hadn’t dried in the book when Allen Elroy ran 29,19 to land a heat of the Top Cat Video Puppy Classic at Traralgon, eclipsing Radley Bale’s recently established record.

In his ‘On The Line’ page, Peter Pearson questioned the longevity of the relationship between the racing codes and the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Glenn McGrath, the up-front personality, initially embraced greyhound racing’s “Go The Pink Dog” promotion but then snubbed invitations to attend the functions and pick up the proceeds of an awareness campaign.

GRV’s contribution to the cause was $120,500.

Notices and adverts galore appeared, with media outlets letting us know that after nearly 12 months off the scene, Geelong and its new Supercentre twin tracks was in trial mode.

And all was looking good until the staff had to test the facilities at one such trialling session.

There appeared a long list of “things to do”. Of course at this time of year the Australian Cup reaches its crescendo, and Tassie chaser, St.Pierre, prepared by Debbie Cannan for Chris Nutt, won the Group 1 feature final in 29.90 at The Meadows.

EACH YEAR at this time, Gold Guide guru, Peter Pearson picks on a personality who has let his hair run rampant.

This time it was Peter Riley, and his famous ‘ponytail’ was to be removed in the name of the charity, ‘Shave For A Cure’.

That ponytail never did recover from its traumatic ordeal.

MAN IN THE TREE was quite active in March, and his few pars on High Earner snaring Rapid Journey’s stake earning record was big news for the sport’s participants.

Trained by Kel Greenough for Christine Robartson, High Earner’s bank account rests at $604,675.

NO MEAN FEAT AT THE START of April, smart chaser, No Justice showed his wares with a 34.22 gallop around The Meadows.

So for the dog to break into the Top 10 over 600 metres at the Broadmeadows layout, it certainly is something special.

Peter Giles prepares the honest dog for the Team Montana Syndicate.

Fromelles wrote his name into the record books when he won the first race at the new Geelong complex, recording 26.20 over 450 metres.

NATIONAL AWARDS night in Sydney saw El Grand Senor snare the Australian Greyhound Of The Year award for Carolyn Jones, whilst SA stayer, Satanic Cash annexed the Stayer of the Year category for Bob Isaacson.

Right from the outset of the Golden Easter Egg series, those parochial NSW folk were chanting for Radley Bale, whilst south of the border it was all about Kilty Lad.

Following the heats, it was hard to disagree with the New South Welshmen, as Radley Bale went into the Group 1 final, while Kilty Lad was back at home in his kennel.

And at month’s end, Radley Bale had been crowned as our top greyhound by taking out the rich Easter Egg final in a slick 29.68 for Graeme Bate and Paul Wheeler.

SA journo, Paul Rehmann told us what a tough race the Anniversary Trophy turned out to be, as Dark Duo, Brahma Boy and Symmetry all ran fast times in the lead-up races.

In the final it was the Tung van Phan owned, Rob Harnas prepared Dark Duo that scored, clocking 29.67.

REVERED scribe, Michael

Fortune let NGF know that Charlie Lister had notched his sixth Scottish Derby when Taylors Cruise held on to score in 29.26 at Shawfield stadium.

AT Wentworth Park, Ron Arnold was singing the praises of the “Zipping” brothers, Zipping Malfoy, Zipping Lad, Zipping Man and Zipping Catra, who were contesting the Magic Maiden series.

Zipping Man took out the 520 metres final in 30.29, downing Miss Milkshake and Zipping Lad. GAP FUNDED HEADED by Racing Minister, Denis Napthine, Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program was given a million dollars spread over the next three years to maintain its operation at Seymour, 100 ‘clicks’ from Melbourne.

With many on the list for a pet, GAP takes ex-racing greyhounds and retrains them to be an adopted friend for life.

Larissa Darragh, who’s attended the needs of ex-racers since 1996,

said that a healthy proportion of the funding would be used to increase public awareness of the project.

WHEN Terry Penny bred the Collide and Ricky’s Angel litter, it was the start of a greyhound racing career for a relative newcomer to the sport.

We now know that the progeny of the pairing produced Miss Roman Nose, Strapper’s Angel and Strapper’s Boy, who have all won on city circuits.

AT LAST, GRNSW has seen the light, electing to have a registered vet in attendance at each meeting, according to the Man In The Tree.

EXCITING sprint prospect, Miata was burning up the tracks in WA. Laurence Torpy said that in three starts during the month, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird set two track records for Paul Stuart. CORSAIR STILL FLYING AS IF they expected something special, people flocked to Albion Park.

And what they saw didn’t disappoint, as Dashing Corsair established a record 33-win sequence at the Amy Street raceway.

On-course both Desley and Dwyer Lennon couldn’t contain their emotions after the red fawn star had taken out the Super Stayers.

NEXT CAME the news that sent the Victorian industry into a spin.

Racing Minister, Denis Napthine explained how the (previous) Labor government had hatched a plan to close some Victorian greyhound tracks, naming Horsham, Cranbourne, Traralgon and Warragul.

Dr. Napthine explained that the blueprint “would have allowed Labor to continue killing-off country racing by shutting down local greyhound tracks and removing the local administrators”.

He continued, “The report is not at all in line with the Coalition government’s policy direction for racing in Victoria”.

RESPECTED vet, Dr. Des Fegan had plenty of info on commercial dog foods, and the amount of iodine they contain.

He reasoned that continued use of these products would cause Sulphonamide poisoning in a greyhound.

VERY active in July, the honourable Denis Napthine said that Wangaratta’s Avian Park

Raceway would be upgraded for racing, as it’s an under-used parcel of land.

Tim McCurdy, sitting member for Murray Valley, said it would help the City of Wangaratta reach its proposed 40,000 population.

TOP Irish scribe, Michael Fortune told how plans made by Rob Britton and Graeme Bate to tackle the Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park had fallen through.

He reckoned that the Aussies had misunderstood the quarantine conditions, and they were waiting for the Irish to do the hard yards for them.

And why not, as they were to be considered as guests of the Irish, weren’t they?

Maybe both camps have issues regarding communication skills.

IN a shock announcement, GRV rubbed out several staff members at Shepparton for gambling when on duty.

Yeah, yeah, everyone knows it’s in the rules... but for what its worth, where had the “head hunters” been for the past 15 years?

Do you just let nature take its course, or police it?

Chances are if you police it, it will go underground.

A no-brainer, really! A N O T H E R s h o c k an no un ceme n t was t he resignation of GRV Chairman, Nick Caley. Nick was a people’s person; he loved a chat with the participants. SA correspondent, Paul Rehmann let us know that Pure Instinct landed the Champion Puppy final at Angle Park, with the Mick Giniotis trained chaser recording a new PB 30.03. WITH the thought of a new racing venue in Queensland gaining more momentum, Paul Dolan said the Queensland state government had backed the plan for Deagon to be developed. NGF mulled over heaps of fall-out from the Shepparton

betting fiasco, with interested folk mostly stating the amounts were insignificant and in any case, the result of a race couldn’t be changed without firstly passing the Steward In Charge, the other judge, the broadcaster, etc. etc. In fact, the photo finish from each race is posted on GRV’s “Results” page for all to see just a few minutes after each race is run. NEW CABINET IN THE ‘Sunshine State’, David Brasch said that Desley and Dwyer Lennon were out shopping for another trophy cabinet after their star boarder, Dashing Corsair landed the President’s Cup at Albion Park, running the 710 metres in 42.10.

GRSA CEO, Matt Corby said in a Press Release that racing in that neck of the woods had thrived in the first half of 2011.

He was worried about extensions of nominations, but to balance that, the shifting of Gawler to Friday was a real winner.

WHEN top trainers make a beeline for Darwin, you know it must be Cup time.

Several top trainers from around the nation trekked to the Top End, including Graeme Bate, who took out this year’s Darwin Cup with Tonneli Bale.

She ran the 537 metres in 30.70 to beat Velocity Regina and Cold Fusion.

With plenty of top class racing during the month, Ron Arnold kept us up to speed on ‘all things NSW’.

His first report centred on the star-studded Megastar at Dapto, and how the in-form Oaks Road, who is trained by Mark Gatt for Eddie Kingswell, ran 29.94 to score.

It was no surprise that El Grand Senor took out the Group 2 Shepparton Cup, picking up a $50,000 bonus for winning his third Victorian country cup during the year.

The superstar sprinter recorded 25.26 when winning the 450 metres event.

Meanwhile around Oz the action was hotting-up in the Nationals series… but it wasn’t always the favourites flying the flag, as Dimity Maher (subbing for Peter Staples) revealed.

In the National Sprint heats at Launceston both favourites failed to score, with Elite Lucy running 30.20 to beat Roo’s Blue and Damek, whilst Tadmore Dunoon defeated

Aussie Cup winner, St. Pierre and Miki Moto in 30.33.

The National Distance phase got punters back on course, as Ming Dynasty ($1.20 fav) won in 43.22 and the well supported Thirteen Black ran 43.57 to annex the other heat.

Bobby Boucheau was successful in his attempt to gain National glory as he packed his bags and headed to Queensland for the NDC Grand Final.

Angela Jackson’s star stayer landed a heat of the time honoured series at Sandown in 41.87.

In the other round it was Shimaguni that clocked 41.97.

In the NSC it was Radley Bale that won through to the final in 29.84, the fastest of the heats.

In Victoria we had problems at the highest level when a Press Release from Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commission told of four GRV employees had been issued “first and final warnings, whilst three others - ”a full-time steward, a part-time steward and a full-time grader – had their services terminated”.

That action came hot on the heels of the appointment of a new GRV Chairman.

Peter Caillard stepped into the top job following Nick Caley’s decision to resign his position.

Over on the Emerald Isle the Irish Derby was in action, with Michael Fortune keeping NGF’s readers informed.

Man In The Tree now has another supporter of a National Rules Book.

Peter Pearson in his ‘On The Line’ column, went in to bat for MITT when several incidents, such as dogs contesting bitches events, dogs being dragged from the boxes when the lure is in motion, dogs wearing the wrong vest, etc, etc., were reported.

As yet there’s still no book that governs greyhound racing around the nation.

You’d wonder what would occur if we didn’t have ‘Hansard’ to

document parliamentary procedure and protocol.

Much the same as greyhound racing in Australia, I suppose! Major players: Group 1 National Sprint C/ship 520 metres METZ MAGIC – 30.04 for Bill Crooks and Ron Ball Group 1 National Distance C/ship 710 metres DASHING CORSAIR – 42.08 for Paddy Fitch, and Desley and Dwyer Lennon Group 3 Laurie Healion Memorial 515 metres FLAVOURS – 29.48 for the Redliner Syndicate and John Finn Group 3 Townsville Cup 498 metres VELOCITY REGINA – 28.57 for Velocity Lodge Partners Syndicate and Tony Brett

HUMAN INTEREST A STORY of unique importance was told by renowned journalist, David Brasch, and it was all about owner and breeder, Bill Crooks.

He told how it was a year since Bill had been to the track to watch one of his dogs race, owing to stints in hospital to treat his diabetes.

However, for the National Sprint Championship in which his chaser, Metz Magic had gained a run off the reserves bench into the five trap, both Bill and trainer, Ron Ball thought they were in with a chance.

Bill watched as his greyhound, having his eighth race start, won the Sprint title in 30.04, downing Cold Fusion and Allen Hertz.

Coincidentally, Ron Ball’s other National Sprint winner, the mighty Flying Amy, also won the event from box five.

Bill described Metz Magic as “delicate”, and “a bit shy”.

“He didn’t break-in too well, but when they get in Ron’s kennel they improve a second on the clock,” he continued.

EVERYBODY’S FAVOURITE, Dashing Corsair was making his

swansong in the National Distance Championship, and Desley and Dwyer Lennon wanted 85 year-old owner, Paddy Fitch to head to Albion Park for the big event.

But Paddy stayed at home and watched on Austar as her champ took the title from Lady Arko and Kalden Mayhem in 41.93.

After suffering a serious pre-race injury, Dashing Corsair retired with a CV showing 125 starts for 57 wins.

Peter Pearson in his ‘On The Line’ column summed-up the red fawn all-distance dog as being “simply the best”.

HAVING trialled well at Angle Park, WA star, Miata looked a near-certainty in a heat of the SA Oaks.

After breaking the Cannington record three times, the talented youngster did it the hard way but made it into the final in 29.78, whilst Mepunga Nicky made her debut outing at the Cardigan Road venue a memorable one, landing a heat in 29.77 after leading throughout.

Paul Rehmann was on hand when Mepunga Nicky led all the way in the SA Oaks final, recording 29.64 to beat Miata and Bralyn Ella.

SWABS in big races are the norm, but when Tonneli Bale returned a positive result after winning the Darwin Cup at Winnellie Park, it certainly shocked most fans.

TOWNSVILLE greyhounds suffered an indignity similar to that of all shared venues when speedway racing was held on their patch.

Racing is at the Showground each week and yet the city council, who manage the crown land facility, tend to ride rough-shod over the dishlickers.

If I remember correctly, the Shepparton meetings suffered a similar indignity whenever the Showgrounds arena was needed for other functions, such as the Show.

And the Royal Agricultural Society also took over and forced the trots to another venue whenever they needed the Ascot Vale Showgrounds premises for other events.

But as Derryn Hinch would say, “That’s life!”

AFTER the Nationals in Queensland, Man In The Tree went in to bat for a State of Origin style series, whereby all greyhounds contest the major feature event representing the state in which they were born.

Quickly Paul Dolan came out with both barrels blazing saying it was “impractical”, and “anyway, it’s almost State of Origin as it is”..

Then there was also an issue raised regarding the reserves in the National finals being from the host state.

“Doggsie” Dolan was again on the front foot when posing the question, “Could reserves from say Queensland and WA be in Hobart if there is a scratching at 8.30am on the day of the race?”

FROM IRELAND, Michael Fortune kept us updated on the Irish Derby final as it was at the semi-finals stage.

The following week the top scribe told us how Razldazl George won the famed feature final at Shelbourne Park.

Deb and Bob Isaacson sent a note to NGF telling how their champ, Satanic Cash fractured a hock when trialling and had run his last race.

The black stayer won 37 times with 23 placings from 74 starts for the Lewiston couple.

HEATHER VILLINGER made regular reports to NGF on the coursing action during the year.

Amidst the promise from GRV that coursing would be reduced to an abnormal level in 2012, the NCA was put on notice by the authority that they didn’t have the nomination numbers to substantiate i t s continuity.

But the last meeting for the year, which featured the Waterloo Cup, won by Cruise Away Lass, certainly had the “numbers” for both noms and patrons.

TOPGUN IN THE FIRST week of October the MGRA announced invitations had been despatched to the connections of 30 hand-picked greyhounds. The 525 metres Group 1 sprint is to be run at The Meadows later in the month. Meanwhile the second Adelaide Cup for the year was in full swing, with reports filtering through that several greyhounds had trialled exceptionally well in the lead-up to the October 13 final, whilst Cape Hawke and Mepunga Nicky had won their respective heats in fast times. OVER in the West, Laurence Torpy let us know that Kalden Aurora had won the Peter Thomas Mixed final at Cannington, with the feature race clocked at 30.60.

A F T E R a $ 1 . 5 m i l l i o n refurbishment that included a new racing surface, Healesville resumed on their Burrumbeet sand straight track, with now two distances, whilst their October 8 meeting featured heats of the Group 2 Cup. Down in Tassie, Peter Staples let us know that Penny’s Angel was burning up the tracks and should be included in all investments. INCREDIBLE as it may seem to many, some of our greyhounds are being shipped to Czechoslovakia. In an ‘On The Line’ item, Peter Pearson relayed the news that the Czechs are opening a brand new greyhound racing venue Presently a litter of Big Daddy Cool and Queen Smig pups has arrived at the Eastern Bloc raceway. Might be worth a look, as maybe it could be a retail outlet for your aspiring youngsters… for more details: www.cgdf,.cz/cs/sportstadium-prague-motol-26th-sep-2011.html Just when you thought there was too much racing on Sky Channel, it seems that the Goulburn GRC has improved its facilities and will race fully televised in 2012. A FEATURE EVENT on the Angle Park Cup night program was the Premiers Cup that had to be declared a ‘No Race’ when Honky Tonk Girl took a tumble and ran back towards the oncoming pack. Because of interference to the placegetters, including fourth, the 731 metres event was quickly declared null and void by GRSA stewards. IN an interview with David Brasch, a peeved Mick Patterson outlined why his dog, He Knows Uno should have made the TOPGUN field, whereas he stayed at home in his kennel that night. ACCORDING to an article in The Bendigo Advertiser that was sent to NGF, their reporter, Clare Quirk reckoned that George Arvanitis can thank his lucky stars for copping a $5,000 fine after driving to a meeting with only one tyre on the trailer, and sparks flying from the bare rim. A couple of months earlier, George had lost his driver’s licence for “reckless conduct endangering serious injury” in the same incident. With the Vic Peters Classic underway, Spring Gun, Cold Fusion and Mepunga Nicky were all fast heat w i n n e r s , a c c o r d i n g t o t h e knowledgeable Ron Arnold. SANDOWN announced the four runners in the hand-picked sprint race, the Shootout, including track record holder, Bekim Bale. With heavy scheduling in the warmer months of the year, there’s bound to be clashes. And Paul Dolan emphasised how important it is that the Ipswich Magical Puppy Auction doesn’t clash with local racing content across all three codes.

Man In The Tree pointed out that in some staying races, clubs are seeking the Best 32 to contest their big events.

However, in the same breath, he wonders if the powers-that-be don’t mean “any 32”

CUP OF CHEER HAVING RUN Best Of Night 25.52 to take out a heat, Dyna Tron was on a mission, with the first leg of that being the Geelong Cup… the first at the new Beckley Supercentre. And a week later the red brindle dog landed the Group 2 feature final in 25.61 for ‘Team Dailly’ and owner, Brendan Wheeler. Kennelmate of the winner, Dyna Bert finished second and Shereen Bale was next across the line. Six days after the Geelong Cup, the Shootout was run at Sandown, and we watched as track record holder, Bekim Bale breezed away with the event in 29.13 for Paul Wheeler and ‘Team Dailly’. The boys from Anakie were on a roll. In the Northern Rivers region of NSW at Casino, the Pop Northfield Maiden was run and won by Kidatee Addo, who completed the 411 metres in 23.26 for Brad Northfield, grandson

of the bloke whom the race takes its title. Following heats of the Gawler Cup at Princess Park, facts and figures pointed to Kalden Athena taking out the final, according to Paul Rehmann. And he was spot-on too, as the Troy Murray trained chaser landed the 531 metres race in 30.90, beating Aston Thomas and Aston Usain. ACROSS the Nullarbor, Laurence Torpy let us know that Vocal Enforcer took out the Schweppes All Stars in 30.34 at Cannington, downing Not In Kansas and Blue Goose. The night previous at Mandurah, the very much in-form Belarus broke his own record, running Mandurah’s 405 metres trip in 22.28 to snare a heat of the feature Chase. In Sydney town, Ron Arnold told how the final of the Vic Peters series drew together the best field he’s seen in the Group 1 event, and in a tough to pick race, he settled on Mr. Clydesdale who drew the inside alley. And whilst the on-course MC knows a good one when he sees it, it was Spring Gun that shot to the front and was never caught, clocking 29.75 when beating Mepunga Nicky and Zipping Catra at Wentworth Park. IN all likelihood, a deceased greyhound, Pedrosa will win the WA GOTY this year. But the star racer’s trainer, Paul Stuart has another one racing well, as Bautista took out a heat of the Young Stars. Improving by three lengths in the final, the solid sprinter registered 30.52 to beat Belarus and Star Keeping. CANNOT let it go unsaid that it was a terrific effort for Australia’s top owning team, the Wheelers, who had seven of the eight runners qualify into the Melbourne Cup final. Gary Ennis’ Enry Walt completed the line-up. It ended up in a first through seventh finish for ‘Team Wheeler’, with Dyna Tron winning in a new race record 29.21, defeating Shereen Bale and Allen Elroy. A roughie from NSW, the Anthony AzzopardI prepared Zipping Malfoy took out the Bold Trease Carnival Cup at Sandown on Melbourne Cup night, running the 715 metres journey in a new race record 41.79 to down Echelon and Slick Lee. POSITIVE STANCE SEEMS that all the good “goss” was about Queensland. and the way racing is conducted there.

Paul Dolan explained the problems that local residents expect to inherit when the complex at Deagon is built.

Quite a humorous one regards the

person who told the local council he reckoned on “thousands coming into our suburb at night time, creating chaos and urinating in the streets”.

“Doggsie” responded with, “Thousands of people attending harness and greyhound racing each week. I’d like to see that!” However, the reality is there won’t be any cars parked in the streets, other than those belonging to the residents, as there’s a park set aside for 400 vehicles. A PLETHORA of Group race action occurs at this time each year, with events such as the Brisbane Cup and Summer Cup in full swing.

Opening the month on a high was Glen Gallon that trainer, Tony Brett gave a real chance in a pre-race interview.

RYLEE’S ENFORCER won the

Capalaba Cup along the grassy straight track in 19.42, snipping a half length off his own standard.

A week later, Greg Stella’s speedster then returned to Capalaba and reduced the record even further to 19.40.

Then Chevez traversed Albion Park’s 395 metres in 22.51 and busted Shiokaze’s mark,

Again in Queensland, a press release told how the United Queensland Greyhound Association had a list of key issues that Racing Queensland should amend, consider and/or adopt.

According to UQGA President, John Falvey, “RQ knows we will hold it accountable for its actions, and the days of the industry blindly acceding to RQ proposals are over.”

OVER in SA, Paul Rehmann said that Angle Park will conduct races over 388 metres, thus continuing the “breed fort speed trend.”

If more tracks adopt a similar formula then pretty soon we’ll see the races such as the 388 metres Adelaide Cup being run!

FOUND the story in “On The Line” that really hit home.

Peter Pearson revealed an

incident at Warragul when the staff at Sky Channel had the race results on-screen prior to the said result being displayed at the track.

As a racecourse judge, I know only too well where the Club Manager’s boot stops after such occurrences.

And it hurts! THE Chris tmas Gift got

underway in NSW, and we saw Noble Pedro break the time barrier, running 29.43 to shave .01 from Queen Lauryn’s record time.

In Hobart, Dyna Tron continued his winning streak at the highest level by taking out the Hobart Thousand, downing Rewind by a nose.

And at The Meadows, Heston Bale asserted his authority on the Silver Chief series by clocking an amazing 29.45 in a heat, which decimated the previous 29.61 record set by Turanza Bale.

AS ALWAYS, newspapers rely on photographic content, and on behalf of NGF I’d like to thank the shutterbugs who supply those fantastic images of the action around the nation.

In Victoria there’s Paul Munt, Peter Bryce, Karen Giblin and Clint Anderson, whilst Craig Youll and his team work at Richmond and Wenty

Park in NSW, with Rob Sheeley, Lisa Vanderstok and Clarinda Campbell doing the country circuit.

In Queensland there’s none better than Corey Pearce and Rick O’Donnell, in SA its Wally Bulyga who snaps the action and across the Nullarbor, Joe Mulder is the Cannington photographer.

All the best for the New Year folks... party hard!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE from ...

MYSTIC APPLE had to really tough it out over the concluding stages to land the 650 metres Group 1 Gold 1242 Sale Cup at the traditional Boxing Day meet-ing.

After leading and being run down in a heat, most expected Mystic Apple to lead again in the $75,000 to the winner final.

Punters had opted for fastest qualifier, Zipping Lad, who drew the pink, as their choice, sending him to the traps on top at $2.60.

Granduer, who’d only quali-fied as a reserve, had gained a run due to the scratching of Shima-guni, and from box six was sec-ond elect at $4.40.

Local hope, Kinga Will from the inside trap at $5.20 was third in the betting, whilst Mystic Ap-ple from the three was the only other runner under double figure odds at $6.30.

The remaining four were Lek-tra Jay ($10.80), Lasting Effect ($21.70), Knocka Knows All ($23.10) and Kinga Zac ($23.10), although that didn’t reflect on the evenness of the field, with just over four lengths on the clock separating the eight contestants.

At boxrise it was a fairly even start before Mystic Apple put the foot down and broke clear, while Zipping Lad, Knocka Knows All and Kinga Will were handily placed.

Down to the first mark it was Mystic Apple in charge in 6.09 holding a two lengths break on Zipping Lad, with a length to Knocka Knows All.

Out of the straight and around to the back, Mystic Apple was in charge, attempting to run them off their legs and posted 16.10 for the second section with his lead nearly three lengths over Zipping Lad and there was a similar gap to Knocka Knows All, with the oth-ers strung out behind.

Mystic Apple went past the third marker in 25.31, but Zipping Lad was almost on his hammer and Knocka Knows All had closed, along with Lasting Effect and then there was a gap to the rest.

They were coming at Mystic Apple thick and fast on the home turn, with Zipping Lad issuing his claim, but the leader wasn’t pre-pared to surrender and helped his own cause by taking the shortest route through the bend, whilst his challengers went wider.

In the drive to the wire Mystic Apple showed a lot of grit when trying stave-off the late lunge from Zipping Lad.

After a short deliberation by the judge it was Mystic Apple’s number that went into the frame.

He’d hung on to score by a neck over Zipping Lad, with Granduer flying home late for third, just three quarters of a length adrift.

Next in was Lasting Effect, who was a length off third, while Knocka Knows All and Lektra Jay were fifth and sixth respec-tively, just a nose by a nose off fourth, making two and a quarter lengths between the first six home.

Litter brothers Kinga Will and Kinga Zac filled the last two plac-ings.

All accolades go to the winner though, as he carved out flying sections and had to withstand all strong finishes of the hardened stayers to score in 37.42, which ironically was the Best Of Night time from the heats, handed in by Zipping Lad.

Owned and trained by Val Awramenko, Mystic Apple, a son of Hallucinate and Spiral Siyan, has been around 54 times for 25 wins and 11 placings, earning prizemoney of $190,850.

We caught up with Val, who told us, “Last week he was a little bit underdone, as he’d only had the one ‘650’, I’d missed out on a gallop with him before the heats.”

“Circumstances decreed that I couldn’t run him; there was noth-ing I could do about it and I paid the penalty.”

“I thought he was the only dog in the race that would im-prove on his heat, as all the others had been running over the 700’s, I thought he’d go two or three lengths better.”

“I knew he’d lead again, and when he’s right and fit it takes a good dog to run him down.”

“Well really when he’s right, they don’t run him down.”

Val gave us an interesting insight into Mystic Apple: “I had a Mystic Apple years ago, and this bloke was identical to him, almost a clone, which is why I used to name again.”

We asked Val what was on the agenda for his racer.

“He’ll be having a ‘600’ at The Meadows next and then it’ll be back to sprinting.”

“I’ll have a go at the Horsham Cup with him, and the Australian Cup; I think 600 will be as far as I’ll run him from now on.”

Val added, “I registered him for stud duties a while ago, so if anyone is interested in a service to him, just give me a call.”

CAPE HAWKE is on target to go through the Silver Chief series un-beaten after returning equal Best Of Night 29.77 to annex a semi-final last Saturday

The Terry Wales owned chaser was all the rage at $1.70 favourite and flew the lids, clocking 5.04 to show the way over Wongawilli Bruno and Eurico Bale heading into the first turn.

Stepping on the gas, Cape Hawke set the race up along the back and completed the second phase in a slick 17.54, holding a five lengths break over Soda Boy and Wongawilli Simon. With a wing on each paw, the Jamie Ennis trained son of Where’s Pedro and Viva Odessa cleared out for a seven and a half lengths win over Soda Boy, while Hansli Bale avoided trouble in the roughly run race and finished third. “Hopefully he’ll fly the lids again in Sunday’s Silver Chief final,” said Jamie Ennis of his charge, Cape Hawke.

“He’s come through the past two weeks okay, and if he can replicate those splits, you must be a good chance (of winning).”

Jamie was referring to the (fast) 5.04 and 17.54 that Cape Hawke ran in his semi win last weekend.

“With what’s drawn around him, I don’t think that box seven is too bad for Cape Hawke.”

“Dogs (of this age) don’t like other dogs coming across them, and many take the ‘softer’ option. (let those coming across have their way).”

“He tends to race well at The Meadows, as he did all of his early education there and really likes the track.”

“I do think the box draw has evened-up the race, because obvi-ously if Heston Bale had the eight and him (Cape Hawke) in seven… well I think Heston Bale would be a certainty.”

“It’s a very good Silver Chief in that there are (at least) three dogs in it

that have the performed with distinc-tion during the past couple of months.”

“I’m going into the race hopeful, but also with the belief that wide draws at The Meadows aren’t ideal,” Jamie concluded.

RECENT Brisbane Cup winner, Glen Gallon ($1.60 fav) was in peak form at The Meadows last weekend and made it through to the Group 1 Silver Chief final.

From box five at the 525 metres start, the Tony Brett trained model of consistency began a bit sluggishly but cut to the rail and was third behind the pacesetting Why Not Happy and Whispering Wind in 5.06 a lap out.

The Queenslander took over along the back and was narrowly ahead of Whispering Wind at the next checkpoint in 17.81.

But the son of Flying Stanley and Incoherent whizzed away in the home straight and made it four consecutive wins for the Velocity Lodge Partners Syndicate when taking out the first semi.

Notching his 12th win from 22 starts, he downed Whispering Wind by almost nine lengths in equal Best Of Night 29.77, with Flip Bale rally-ing into third place, three quarters of a length adrift. IDEALLY BOXED in the two, Hutmaker ($2.80 fav) was a good 29.85 winner of a Silver Chief semi-final. Raced by Rob Britton, the son of Premier Fantasy and Beekeeper had landed a heat in 29.96 the previous week and showed there’s still plenty of improvement in him.

In front from the outset, Hut-maker was always going sweetly, and after recording splits of 5.08 and 17.72, he turned for the run-in with a race winning break. Securing his 10th career victory after 30 attempts, the July 2009 whelp coasted across the line nine and a half lengths clear of McCosker Speed, while Rockadore railed home for third. GODSEND, the other semi win-ner, put plenty of value into the multi-ple bet types. A $19.70 chance drawn the five trap, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Sensation Lee cut to the fence at boxrise to lead Joshua and Heston Bale around the initial corner, having posted 5.12. The Sergio Buccilli owned racer powered along the back and held a two lengths lead over Mepunga Geor-die in 17.82 nearing the final bend. Although the tens-on pop, Heston Bale extricated himself from the pack and flashed home for second, it was the Jason Thompson trained Godsend that greeted the judge a length and three quarters ahead in a new PB 30.02, while Mepunga Geordie wound up third. It was the third win from seven starts at The Meadows for Godsend, whilst his CV shows 14 starts for six wins and five placings. That time (30.02) should also see the Pearcedale based dog start an out-sider again in this weekend’s $75,000 to the winner final, whilst Flip Bale and Mepunga Geordie made the re-serves bench in the ‘black type’ clas-sic.

WITH THREE greyhounds registering Best Of Night 29.77 last weekend, and Hutmaker running the 525 me-tres in 29.85 to win a semi-final, will early pace determine the outcome of this year’s Silver Chief final at The Meadows on Sunday night?

And the box draw hasn’t done much to assist some of the better credentialled candidates, with record breaker, Heston Bale in the three and Brisbane Cup winner, Glen Gallon in the eight.

From my perspective, I believe that Cape Hawke can and will lead from box seven, with his danger be-ing the stronger Hutmaker, who is set to exit the two trap.

Hutmaker is an interesting run-ner, as his trainer, Rob Britton had an Irish campaign mapped-out for him in 2011.

“I’m just happy that Hutmaker is in the final of the Silver Chief,” said Rob Britton. “I’d probably have pre-ferred him a little further out, as he gets off the track a little.”

“But it’s such a good field and whatever greyhound wins is going to need a bit of luck.”

“With a couple of pacy dogs in it, if Heston Bale gets a crack at them he’ll win. He’s got lengths on them if he gets out cleanly.”

“But really, if you take him out of the equation it’s still a very good field.”

“If Hutmaker comes out smartly and is amongst the first four passing the post the first time then he’s in it with a good chance.”

“Hutmaker was one of those dogs that was going to Ireland for the Derby at Shelbourne Park, and we had him vaccinated for that trip.”

I did wonder if that variation to his training regime had a bearing on his preparation for racing in Victoria after the trip was abandoned.

“No, it was injury that interrupted his preparation here,” the Lara men-tor exclaimed.

“He’s still only two and a half and has had three serious injuries. Every time I’ve got five or six weeks into a campaign for him, he broke down, so consequently we haven’t seen the best of him yet.”

“He does prefer The Meadows to Sandown Park, and with his pace, you’d think he’d be suited to horse-shoe shaped tracks, but he hasn’t shown that as yet.”

“The box draw hasn’t favoured most of the better credentialled run-ners either, so it keeps him in conten-tion,“ Rob told us.

CAPE HAWKE, who been racing in the shadow of Heston Bale and Bekim Bale, has been consistently fast during this sapling series and has already run a track record at San-down, so should be a tough nut to crack.

Prepared by Jamie Ennis, his ability to begin quickly at The Mead-ows is a real asset, especially as Heston Bale is hit-and-miss when drawn near the rail, and box three could prove quite awkward again.

But don’t get me wrong, as when Heston Bale is on song he’s a very slippery customer, as his recent Meadows track record-breaking 29.45 performance clearly indicates.

GLEN GALLON came from the centre draw to win a semi in 29.77, but he’s been allocated the pink vest this time, and that’s not ideal for the sprint trip around the Broad-meadows layout.

Trained by Tony Brett, he recently landed the Brisbane Cup at Albion Park and will be attempting to make it back to back Group 1 victo-ries when he lines up on New Year’s Day.

GODSEND found

his best form to snare a semi in a new PB 30.02 after leading through-out from a centre alley.

And whilst the Jason Thompson prepared chaser has the prized inside trap in the final, he would need to improve by over four lengths on the clock to beat them home.

If there’s to be a shock result then maybe Soda Boy could be the one.

He’s won seven of his past nine starts and did pull ground from Cape Hawke before finishing second last weekend.

But most of all, he’s in the power-ful Peter Giles kennel at Tanjil South, so must be kept safe.

Realistically, the fawn dog needs to begin fast from the six alley then possie-up just off the speed to get the best possible chance of gaining Group 1 glory.

Like the trainers, I too found it a tough race to pick the winner, and that’s bound to translate into it be-coming a great on-course betting duel. SELECTIONS HUTMAKER Cape Hawke Heston Bale Soda Boy

GREYHOUND Racing Victo-ria (GRV) has primary respon-sibilities in regards not only the day to day greyhound racing product (racing integrity) but also the behaviour of industry participants, club and GRV employees (people integrity). Following the Judge Gordon Lewis report of 2009 and more specifically, forma-tion of the Racing Integrity Commission (RIC), contempo-rary GRV policies and/or rules were updated requiring em-

ployees to consider and ac-knowledge integrity responsi-bilities, at least annually. One such rule states that certain GRV employees are not permitted to be involved in any form of betting on any grey-hound racing event. As an extension of recent investigations from the Office of the RIC, the GRV Integrity Sub-Committee (ISC) has de-termined that two GRV em-ployees be disciplined for inap-propriate betting practises.

Accordingly, one fulltime GRV staff member has been dismissed and another part-time employee has received a First and Final warning. It is important to note that following this total investiga-tion, GRV is satisfied that there is no evidence or suggestion that any collusion or corrupt practices have taken place. There are no further matters being investigated by the ISC.

ONCE AGAIN Dapto staged a double header last week, with first cab off the rank being the Wednesday night fixture when a veteran chaser returned to the winner’s list. Just turning four years-old, Moonshine Caddie has recently had a change of kennel and is now prepared by George Mi-callefn who put the polish on No Rules League when a recent win-ner of the Winnebago Classic at the course. Stepping out over the middle distance, Moonshine Caddie had been out of the major end of prizemoney for quite a few starts but this time was well served at the start.

Exiting box five, Moonshine Caddie jumped fast, as too did Go Wild Annie, who had drawn right alongside.

In the straight the first time Moonshine Caddie took up the front runner’s role and was enjoy-ing being on his own as they left the one lap mark astern. Moonshine Caddie took them to the back, while Go Cyril Go worked into second place and Hottie Dos was next.

A veteran of 87 career starts, she turned for home in front, with Go Cyril Go gradually cutting back the margin. But Moonshine Caddie ‘lifted’ sufficiently, holding out Go Cyril Go to score by three quarters of a length, completing the 600 metres excursion in 35.04, with Georgie Lyn occupying third place, a fur-ther one and three quarter lengths away. Moonshine Caddie, by Hallu-

cinate from Liana Bella, has a CV that reveals 14 wins and 29 plac-ings.

Go Cyril Go (Most Awesome x Cyclone Mini), another four year-old veteran, has notched six wins and 37 placings from on 120 starts for trainer, Sheila Lewis, whilst Georgie Lyn (Kadichia Lad x Sovereign City), prepared by Lyn Tsohalis, after 33 career starts has collected four wins and eight placings.

Another winner on the card that had been off the winner’s list for some time was Certify, who rectified that via a strong win in the Lakeline Butchery Stake over 520 metres. When the lids rose the best away was the rail’s runner, Junior Dossantos, while Rybenbrook Britt from six and Certify from two were also quickly into stride. Going to the back Junior Dos-santos held the front, however, Certify had the leader in his sights and by the top bend had assumed control. Certify turned for home in front, and despite Junior Dossan-tos still in close proximity, he pulled out plenty.

Clinging on, he scored by three quarters of a length in a smart 29.91, with third placed Rybenbrook Britt a further one and a quarter lengths away.

Certify is by Bombastic Shiraz out of Crafty Witch, trained by Neil Staines, has had 22 career starts for four wins and 10 placings.

Carol Walker’s Junior Dos-santos (Prue Octane x Dos San-tos) has raced 18 times, produc-ing seven wins and one placings, whilst the Andy Lord trained Ry-benbrook Britt (Bombastic Shiraz x Flick The Switch) from 21 career starts has yielded six wins and 12 placings.

Ray Steele was a relieved man when Bit Sassy won her first race in the Dapto Dining Maiden over 520 metres. From box eight, Bit Sassy was away well, with Plastic Cac-tus from the inside alley railing through to be prominent at the first corner, along with Porcelain Steel, who made it a line of three. Porcelain Steel and Bit Sassy broke away into the back before Bit Sassy worked to the front, although Porcelain Steel was not dropping off too far. Turning for home Bit Sassy held a slight advantage, and de-spite Porcelain Steel continuing to ‘lift’, she held on to score by a half length to Porcelain Steel in 30.46, with Plastic Cactus third, a further two and three quarter lengths away. Bit Sassy, by Bit Chili from Meredith Grey, scored at her third start.

Porcelain Steel (Pure Octane x Hidden Assets), trained by Neil Staines, has raced just twice to date, whilst the Gary Adams trained Plastic Cactus (Laurie Banner x Gazsha) has had just 2 starts with a win and a placing.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, December 29th, 2011 – Page 69NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

ON A NIGHT that featured four semi-finals of the Silver Chief series, there were three chasers that registered 29.77 Best Of Night honours at The Meadows last Saturday.

Glen Gallon and Cape Hawke were two of those, whilst the other was Dyna Morris, a $5.00 chance who was a big winner, and one of four greyhounds with the “Dyna” prefix to sample success on the night. Kick-starting the run of the Brendan Wheeler owned chasers was Dyna Mor-ris, who donned the stripe vest and showed more pace than his rivals to lead from go to whoa in the 525 metres Sea-sons Greetings Grade 5. After recording splits of 5.14 and 17.73, the ‘Team Dailly’ trained son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale scored a runaway nine lengths victory over Aleta

Allen, who chased the leader throughout, with third placed McDoom rallying home after bungling the jump.

Dyna Morris, who clocked 29.77, has raced 52 times, yielding 12 wins and 12 placings for $55,400 in stakes.

IT WAS JUST 22 minutes later that Dyna Digger kept the flag flying for ‘Team Dailly’ and Brendan Wheeler by taking out the Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

After a tardy beginning from the rails draw, Dyna Digger ($5.60) settled down beyond midfield, with the front running

Boggy Spitfire recording 5.13 to lead Chief Bambury around the initial bend.

The red fawn son of Where’s Pedro and Dyna Panama then improved along the rail, then after Chief Bambury and Boggy Spitfire knocked each other over, he found the lead, running 17.92 coming off the back.

Proving far too good in the run to the judge, Dyna Digger scored by two and a half lengths to Disraeli in 30.12, while kennelmate of the winner, Dyna Steal wound up third.

From 40 raceday appearances, Dyna Digger has notched 10 wins, 11 placings and $28,385 in prizemoney.

ANOTHER 23 minutes elapsed be-fore Brendan Wheeler teamed with Graeme Bate to make it a treble.

Exiting the five gate at pace in the 600 metres Macro Meats Mixed 4th/5th Grade, Dyna Kate highballed along in front, registering sections of 8.98 and 22.07 to demoralise her rivals.

Having led by over four lengths over Sheza Weetbix rounding the final bend, the sister of Dyna Morris charged past the post five and a half lengths clear of the luckless Echelon in 34.77, with Proven Mayhem third.

It was the first middle distance win at The Meadows for Dyna Kate, whose career stats reveal 14 wins and nine plac-ings from 41 outings, collecting $43,905 along the way.

AS ANTICIPATED by most, the very much in-form Dyna Tron was a class above them in the 525 metres MTD Free For All, making it six wins from 13 at-tempts at the Broadmeadows layout.

A pleasantly surprisingly aspect for punters was that the Geelong Cup, Bris-bane Cup and Hobart Thousand winner returned $1.50 on SuperTAB.

After spearing to the rail in the blue singlet, Dyna Tron was relentless in his pursuit of excellence, running out an all the way five and a half lengths winner over Star Diamond in 29.96, with a cou-

ple of lengths to Select Breaker grabbing the skinny end of the prize.

Trained at Anakie by ‘Team Dailly’, Brendan Wheeler owned brother of both Dyna Morris and Dyna Kate racked-up his 25th career victory to go with 10 plac-ings in 47 starts, whilst his bank balance now stands at $422,088.

ALSO during the 11-race meeting,

Paul Wheeler netted a double, with his first winner being Garett Bale (Return The King - Spiral Bale), who snared the opener, a 525 metres Grade 5, after working home nicely to clock 30.24 for ‘Team Dailly’.

Then the Graeme Bate trained Fot-oula Bale (Velocette - Saffron Bale) won the ‘lucky’ last, a Grade 5, in 30.23.

Owner, Sergio Buccilli with the Thompson boys, Jason and “Frosty” after $19 chance, Godsend scored the upset of the four Silver Chief semis at The Meadows on Saturday night, downing “boom dog” Heston Bale in 30.02.

Caretaker trainer and handler, Ronnie Hood poses with the brilliant Queenslander, Glen Gallon after the Group 1 winner scored a sizzling 29.77 in his semi-final win.

OZZ MAGIC collected the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the Bring Your Club To Sandown Maiden Final over 515 metres.

Drawn in box two at $3.50 after win-ning a heat on debut in 29.72, the Neville King trained youngster came out running and led them down to the first mark in a slick 5.04.

Ozz Magic was in charge at the back corner in 18.84 and travelling like a win-ner, with Five Paws doing the chasing ahead of Benny Be Good.

Ozz Magic wasn’t in any real danger over the final stages and made it to the line three and three quarter lengths ahead of Five Paws ($7.50), with Benny Be Good ($6.30) collecting third money, three quarters of a length in arrears.

Ozz Magic, a daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Tizz Magic, owned by Rodney Dunn, stopped the clock at 29.73.

Bale the best ADELLE BALE, a litter sister of Bekim Bale and Heston Bale, ran the BON time of 41.96 when successful in heat two of the Rapidvite Vite Amino GB Grade 5 over 715 metres.

Coming from box three at $4.30, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale was out smartly to be second at the first mark, with Kuusou Rumba on her outside holding a narrow lead in 6.09, and Atelier third.

Adelle Bale took over coming into the straight the first time and went past the post with a lap to travel in 15.84, with

Kuusou Rumba three quarters of a length second and three lengths to Atelier in third spot.

Adelle Bale was still the pilot at the far turn, passing through in 30.68, holding sway by three lengths over Atelier, with a length to Kuusou Rumba third.

Adelle Bale did it comfortably to the line, scoring by two lengths over Atelier ($4.40), with Pink Bandanna ($3.00 fav) six lengths further astern.

Trained by Andrea Dailly, this was the black stayer’s first win at her second try at the trip, as part of her three wins in 18 runs overall.

She was the first leg of a winning treble for her trainer, the first leg of a winning double for her litter and the first of four winners for owner, Paul Wheeler.

ANDREA won the final two races with Dyna Lowell, giving owner, Brendan Wheeler a double, and the Philip Lene-han owned Lektra Express, whilst Paul also scored with the Mark Delbridge trained Elmira Bale in the third semi-final of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres. Five on the trot STETSON DONNA made it five wins on the trot to land the second semi-final of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres.

Sent to box one at $4.60, the Peter Dundon owned and trained youngster was out reasonably and was in third spot at the first peg, where Witch’s Potion led in 5.06, with Ruby Jet second and Leeli-cious out wide fourth.

Witch’s Potion was in control around to the far turn, getting there in 18.85, but she had Stetson Donna hugging the rails a length behind, with another length to Ruby Jet.

Stetson Donna made her move around the side and railed to the lead on the final bend before coming away down the running.

She scored by three lengths over Witch’s Potion ($11.70), with Ruby Jet ($12.10) a length and a half further afield.

Stetson Donna, daughter of Premier Style and Silent Flower, recorded the new PB of 29.56 to make it two wins in six tries at the trip, whilst overall the black chaser has scored in five of her 13 out-ings. Irma on course IRMA BALE, who’s another member of the Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale litter, clocked the new PB and BON time of 29.44 to score in the fourth semi-final of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres. Rated on top at $2.50 from box two, the black galloper came out running and led them down to the first mark in 5.04, with By Starlight down the outside second and Chilly Babe over on the fence third.

Irma Bale was making every post a winner as she sped around to the back in 18.84 with a two lengths break on By Starlight and a similar margin to Chilly Babe third. Irma Bale was untroubled when scor-ing by six and three quarter lengths over By Starlight ($8.00), with a neck to third placed Chilly Babe ($8.80). Irma Bale, who’s won two of three on the track and 10 of 20 overall, was the middle pin of a winning treble for trainer, Graeme Bate.

Earlier in the night, Graeme scored with Dyna Dara in the first semi-final of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres, with that chaser being the first leg of a winning double for owner, Brendan Wheeler, who also won with David Bale in the CGC Staff Party Free For All over 515 metres.

Dyna Dara finally broke through at Sandown Park last week after six previous attempts when a strong 29.91 semi-final winner for Brendan Wheeler and Graeme Bate. Handled by Aidan Andrews, the daughter of Hallucinate and Denise Bale gets to the line hard in her races and now has a dozen wins from 48 career starts.

Two awkward draws in both heat and semi of the Laurels hasn’t fazed Elmira Bale. The daughter of Bartrim Bale and Serene Bale has saluted from the six and five traps so far, and last week worked home hard to register an impressive 29.74 semi-final win for leading owner, Paul Wheeler and trainer, Mark Delbridge.

Stetson Donna and owner trainer, Peter Dundon of Finley have spent plenty of time on the road lately. The hard chasing daughter of Premier Style and Silent Flower racked-up another city win, her fifth on the trot, when successful in a new 29.56 PB in her respective Laurels semi last week.

Irma Bale has been disappointing for favourite followers of late, but last Thursday night she came out running and was unstoppable, recording a sizzling 29.44 semi win for the Wheeler and Bate combination. Handled by Amy Cole, the Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale 26 months-old bitch clocked splits of 5.04 and 18.84 and looks the one to beat in Thursday night’s rich historic classic.

LEIGH WOOD recognises a promis-ing pup when it surfaces, and he has no qualms about predicting a bright future for one that he owns and bred.

Ukulele Lad has emerged as one of the state’s brightest prospects fol-lowing his win in the Christmas Gift final over 452 metres at Devonport last week.

The well bred dog made it three wins in succession when he demol-ished a handy field in the Gift final.

He began brilliantly from box four and had a two lengths break at the top turn then extended that advan-tage in the home straight.

‘The son of Baywatch Boy and Touch And Go hit the line about six lengths clear of his nearest rival, King’s View, with Premier Magic a close third, well clear of Irish Guard who grabbed fourth, just in ahead of Brindle Bolta.

Ukulele Lad has won half of his eight starts and has placed in the other four outings.

His time of 25.83 was only .01 outside his personal best, set in win-ning his Christmas Gift heat a week earlier.

“I’m very pleased with what this dog has shown so far and hopefully he can go to the next level,” Wood said.

Ukulele Lad is not what profes-s iona l b reed ers wou ld ca l l ‘fashionably bred’, being by a dog that Wood used to train.

“This dog is home-grown because the sire, Baywatch Boy was trained by me some time ago and the brood bitch is one of mine.”

“We got a few from the litter that

can run, but Ukulele Lads is clearly one out of the box.”

Ukulele Lad was a late bloomer, but Wood says that was by design.

“I never looked at this dog to race until he was two years old.”

“He ticks a lot of the good boxes, does this dog.”

“He is very sensible, is a good beginner and has good early speed, plus he’s got good mid-race pace and he’s strong at the finish.”

“There’s not much more you would want from a dog,” he said.

Wood was always confident that Ukulele Lad would make a name for himself.

“From the first day I took him to the racetrack I knew he’d make the grade.”

And whilst Ukulele Lad has had only eight starts for four wins and as many minor placings, Wood has tar-geted the Group 3 Devonport Cup as his main mission.

“This dog does all the right things in his races, so it would be foolish not to have a crack at the Devonport Cup,” he said.

“If a dog can lead and run time, you don’t have to have a lot of ex-perience, and that’s what I’m banking on with this dog,” he said.

The Devonport Cup heats will be run on January 10, with the final a week later.

Sherriff’s doing time TASMANIAN greyhound trainer, Mick Sherriff has been disqualified over two of his greyhounds producing positive swabs to Caffeine.

Racing Services Tasmania stew-ards yesterday concluded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding urine samples taken from the grey-hounds Cradoc Hill and Dee Nine Dozer, both prepared by Sherriff.

The dogs tested positive after they contested races at the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club on October 13, 2011.

Analysis of the urine samples showed the presence of Caffeine and its metabolites, Theophylline, Parax-anthine and Theobromine.

After hearing submissions from Sherriff, who trains at Latrobe on the north-west coast, and considering evidence presented by Dr. John Vine of Racing Analytical Services, stew-ards charged Mr Sherriff with two offences under GAR 83(2)(a) which states: “The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound nominated to compete in an event; shall present the greyhound free of any drug.”

Sherriff entered a plea of not guilty to both charges.

After giving due consideration to Sherriff’s pleas, stewards found the trainer guilty on both charges.

Sherriff made a further submission regarding penalty, upon which stew-ards handed down these decisions:

Charge 1 – Swab sample taken from “Cradoc Hill” – Sherriff disqualified for a period of three (3) months effec-tive at the conclusion of the inquiry (December 19, 2011) and expiring at midnight on March 19, 2012. Charge 2 – Swab sample taken from “Dee Nine Dozer” – Sherriff was disqualified for a period of three (3)

months, wholly suspended for a 12 month period from the date of any subsequent licence being granted, on the condition that he does not re-offend under the prohibited sub-stances rule.

Sherriff has appealed the stew-ards’ decision and has been granted a stay of proceedings.

CRAZY HEART put up another giant-killing performance when the Bruce Lell-mann trained chaser took out the 515 metres Christmas Sprint against a very talented field at Angle Park last Thursday night. Drawn in box six and starting at the good odds of $10.00 behind race favour-ite, Kalden Mayhem ($3.00), Crazy Heart began well then showed good pace out wide to settle down behind the paceset-ting Where’s Pancho through the first turn

Racing past Where’s Pancho to take a very clear lead into the back, Crazy Heart slipped away to reach the top turn

with a three lengths break. Rounding the final bend well clear of Point Two Over getting through to sec-ond, Crazy Heart finished the race off well. The daughter of Black Enforcer and Bar Crusher crossed the line four lengths ahead of Point Two Over in Best Of Night 29.99, with Goosebumps making good ground in third place. An underrated performer who made the Adelaide Cup field earlier this year, Crazy Heart took her record to 19 wins and 17 placings from 46 career starts. Stove is hot STOVE ROCKS maintained his good strike rate at Angle Park last Thursday night when he won the Outside Ideas Mixed 3rd/4th Grade event for trainer, Rob Harnas. Starting as a $7.00 chance from box four behind popular elect, Hannah McLaren ($1.70), Stove Rocks was checked soon after the start and drifted wide to be last through the first turn, where Evacuation showed the way. Making good ground out deep on the track to be fourth in the back straight, Stove Rocks was working his way into the race and was third behind Evacuation and Brahma Boy at the top turn. Closing in on the leaders through the final bend and straightening for home still out deep on the track, Stove Rocks fin-ished strongly to overhaul Evacuation in the run to the judge. A son of Surf Lorian and Spiral Tears, he scored by a half length to Evacuation in 30.35, while Dyna Erka made late ground for third. in the event, Hannah McLaren missed the start from box one and never got going.

Known to be impatient behind the boxes, a 5 minute delay for a harness event did nothing to help her chances.

TRIPPING COWBOY was rewarded for his strong form of late when the Charles Irwin trained chaser won the

grsa.com.au Grade 4 at Angle Park last Thursday night. A $5.00 chance from box two, Trip-ping Cowboy jumped fast but was beaten for early pace and settled third through the first turn behind early leader, Full Embargo. Just two lengths off the pace heading down the back, Tripping Cowboy looked to be blocked for a run and reached the top turn still third behind new leader, Fly-ing Magpie. After switching wide through the final bend and dropping back to fourth, with Lektra Train, Full Embargo and Flying Magpie battling it out up front, Tripping Cowboy flashed home.

The son of Hallucinate and Modday Cowgirl snatched the lead in the shadows of the post and passed the post a length in advance of Lektra Train, recording 30.37, with Full Embargo a close third. SA GOTY THE 2011 SA Greyhound Of The Year Awards Night has a change of date next year and will be held on Saturday, March 17 at Chasers Restaurant. Troy Murray’s chaser, Kalden May-hem looks the likely favourite to snare the prestigious award, but the Rob Harnas trained Dark Duo also had a big year before succumbing to injury and could make things interesting. Terrific Troy VICTA TROY helped make up for his recent luckless fourth in the Group 3 Brian Johnstone Memorial when he an-nexed the final of the Gawler Classic last Tuesday for trainer, Ron Schadow. A 30.79 Best Of Day heat winner a week earlier, Victa Troy was all the rage and he went to the boxes as a $1.30 chance. Donning the red vest, Victa Troy was away only fairly but mustered speed on the rail to settle down second through the first turn behind early leader and kennel-mate, Victa Tina.

Tracking Victa Tina down the back straight, Victa Troy was just warming up when he strode to the front at the top turn. Rounding the final bend three lengths clear of Victa Tina, Victa Troy seemed to sense the occasion and kicked away in the home straight.

With Roadworthy now second and finishing fast, the son of Where’s Pedro and Teelah won by five and a half lengths in Best Of Day 30.98, with Emerley Max making late ground to be third. A talented chaser who is still improv-ing with every run, Victa Troy took his record to 13 wins and seven placings from 32 career starts. Petroni no phony KALDEN PETRONI brought up her fifth win from her past six starts at Angle Park last Thursday night when she took out the fundraising@chasers Mixed 4th/5th Grade event over 600 metres for trainer, Troy Murray. well supported into $1.50 favourite when sporting the pink singlet, Kalden Petroni jumped nicely and showed good pace early to settle in second place with a lap to run behind early leader, Ruarc Entity. Tracking wide passing the catching pen and about four lengths off the pace, Kalden Petroni made good ground down the back and was within two lengths of Ruarc Entity at the top turn. Switching to the outside and swoop-ing on the lead through the final bend, Kalden Petroni finished full of running.

Bounding away in the home straight, the daughter of Surf Lorian and Abbadale Gold ran 35,22 when scoring by seven and a quarter lengths over Ruarc Entity, who struggled over the extra distance, while Pattie’s Return held down third place. A winner of 10 races from 29 career starts, Kalden Petroni took her record over the middle distance trip to four wins and two placings from just seven starts.

Crazy Heart, pictured with trainer, Bruce Lellman and GRSA’s Hunnies, Lucy and Ellie. The black dog was still panting when Wally Bulyga took this snapshot of him, having just run Best Of Night 29.99 at Angle Park.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, December 29th, 2011 – Page 71NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

AN “out of the blue” phone call from Northern Rivers owner, Bruce Wood instigated a Christmas Stocking victory for Tough As at Albion Park last Thurs-day night.

Tough As used the rails draw to wear down early leader, Ability To Speed before winning the 520 metres Christmas Stocking final.

The son of Give Me Five and Go Puppa Go scored by a half head over Ability To Speed, with three quarters of a length to third placed Spindle.

Ron Ball trains Tough As for Wood, who bred the litter.

“Bruce rang out of the blue, ”said Ron. “I’d never trained a dog for him before.”

Tough As has always shown great ability but poor box draws have con-spired to set him a task as a young dog. He took his record to 29 starts for nine wins and seven placings, and the Christmas Stocking was his third straight victory since he returned from a long spell.

“The dog got a virus and that put him on the sidelines. Then he got ken-nel cough and then he got the virus again,” said Ron.

“He’s had bad boxes all his life.” Since his return from a spell, the

dog has been drawing better boxes. He had the two in a heat and won

in 30.34 then last Thursday night ran 30.42.

Ability To Speed lived up to his name with a 5.73 first section that opened a big lead into the back straight before Tough As, hugging the rail, set out after him.

On the home turn Tough As was looming quickly and Ability To Speed was shortening stride.

They battled each other along the straight, with Tough As living up to his name to grab the lead on the line.

“Bruce will be watching tonight, but he is in Western Australia visiting his son for Christmas,” said Ball.

Paul Robson of race sponsors Redcliffe-Oxley Meats, presented the trophy to Ball.

Ball had earlier landed Degas Ve-gas a winner of a Fifth Grade.

First for Bob FORMER Mount Isa trainer, Bob Higgs landed his first Albion Park Thursday night winner last week with his first ever runner on the track’s premier night of racing.

Lights On (Give Me Five - Double El) led throughout to score by four and a half lengths over Pocket The Penny, with a neck to Intervene third.

It was the second victory in three starts for Lights On, who had already won a Maiden at Ipswich in a slick 30.90.

Bob bred the dog from a give-away brood bitch that he got from Tasmania after she had whelped a couple of other litters, some of which are still racing.

“She was a nice bitch, winning at The Meadows and then in Tassie,” said Bob.

Higgs trained for a number of years while living in Mount Isa but moved to Coominya.

Two years ago, after he retired, he decided to get back into training grey-hounds.

“I was in dogs in Mount Isa from 1985,” he said.

Double El is the dam of Tasmanian Breeders Classic winner, Smokin’ Gon-zales, from a mating to Collide.

Her litter to Give Me Five has also produced Bundaberg Young Guns final-ist, Cambla Kid.

“My sons have a couple from the litter as well and they are all going well,” said Bob. Derby’s the aim SOHO MAX has earned himself a tilt at the upcoming Group 1 National Derby.

Soho Max (Bombastic Shiraz - Runya Beach) raced right away to win a 520 metres Mixed 3rd/4th Grade by five and a half lengths over Cousin Alfie, with four lengths to Alota Courage third.

It was his ninth win in 20 starts but

the quickest he has run to date, and the time of 30.06 is what impressed his connections most.

“That’s clinched it,” said John Dart after the win.

John’s wife, Glenda trains Soho Max for Mark Carius.

“He had to run that sort of time for us to contemplate a trip to The Gardens for the Derby,” said John. “We’ll take him there for a trial first.”

Soho Max has always shown great ability and has continued to improve with racing.

‘He’s very strong, but this is the first time he has begun that well,” said John. Soho Max came out of the seven box and was up on the outside of the leaders at the winning post the first time, then when he dashed clear into the back straight, none of those chasing him were going to run him down.

The fact that Soho Max led was an achievement, as the race was full of speed drawn inside him, which is why the dog started big odds, despite his outstanding form.

Soho Max is ready to tackle all comers in the National Derby after winning a Mixed 3rd/4th Grade in 30.06 at Albion Park, according to John Dart.

Pictured with Ron Ball and Santa at Albion Park last week, Tough As clocked 30.42 to take home the Christmas Stocking over 520 metres.

THE RACING WORLD lives in a changing land-scape.

I was chatting with friends recently about “the good old days” of greyhound racing at the Gabba track in Brisbane.

“Everyone says it was great going there, but why was it so special,” asked one guy, who had never been to a Gabba greyhound meeting.

The reply was: The place had atmos-phere.

Cram 7000 people into the venue and 44 bookmakers into one under-cover area, and there’s your atmosphere.

Of course, there was the fact that you could lean over the outside fence and almost touch the dogs as they paraded before they raced.

Everything wasn’t perfect, of course. There were five or six bookmakers in a

separate ring, fielding on Dapto, Sandown and Hobart greyhound meetings.

There was a radio broadcast only. My friends found it hard to believe that

you couldn’t watch the races on television. We take that for granted nowadays.

The Gabba club won some real friends when they introduced a service whereby you could get there early on a Thursday and watch a replay of the previous week’s San-down meeting.

A videotape was literally flown up from Melbourne each week.

We’re talking about the late 1970’s here. Yes, we regard them as the “good old

days”, but without many of the comforts we are accustomed to nowadays. Family ties PART of the changing landscape of grey-hound racing is that there aren’t many young trainers around nowadays.

In fact, many trainers who raced at the Gabba in the 1970’s are still preparing grey-hounds today, and have aged accordingly!

People at the Ipswich Tuesday meeting last week would have noticed a young fellow leading a greyhound out in Race 4 and may have thought he is a new trainer on the scene.

That’s not the case, but he is from a fam-ily steeped in greyhound racing history.

At 17 years of age, Nick Tzouvelis was handling El Fiddy Cent for his dad, Tom.

And the dog won! “Nick has had a catcher’s license for

about 12 months but only recently stepped up to the task of handling runners to the boxes,” said proud dad, Tom.

“He had handled some seconds, but this was his first winner.”

Tom says Nick has grown up with grey-hounds but doubts that his son will become a trainer.

“He loves the dogs and is a great help with them but his real passion is tennis,” Tom revealed.

“He coaches and teaches juniors, and travels around the state a fair bit.”

“It’s not very often that he has a free day, and I can’t see him giving away tennis to train greyhounds.”

Tom’s 15 year-old daughter, Jasmine is a licensed catcher and is seen regularly at the tracks in that role. Jackpot jackpots DAVE McCMILLAN was a happy chappy when his runner, Kath’s Rebel jumped to the front in Race 7 at Ipswich on Tuesday of last week. Kath’s Rebel was the Trainers Jackpot dog and McMillan stood to collect a whopping $2,150 if she could win.

Unfortunately, after leading clearly mid-race, Kath’s Rebel was run down in the home straight and finished fourth. The Trainers Jackpot has been won quite regularly at Albion Park in recent months.

But at Ipswich it’s proving to be some-thing of a hurdle for participants.

The Ipswich “Pick 7” competition contin-ues to jackpot, now being worth $7,300.

People are asked to pick the winners of Races 4 - 10 to claim that prize.

Now selecting seven winners is no easy task, that’s for sure.

But one of these days there will be a run of fancied runners and someone will have a very nice earn. Consider this If Santa Claus is out of money, is he Saint Nickle-less?

WITH SANTA heading for town, every-one was looking for their own special gift.

But trainer, Chris Arletos received the coolest gift of all when his 30kg black chaser, Cool Gift led most of the way in the Pages Event Hire Equipment Stake at Wentworth Park last Friday night. Sitting up in the eight alley at the 520 metres start, Cool Gift began on terms with the others and in the run to the first turn was alongside Kyl’s Me Girl, who had exited box three. Leaving the straight Cool Gift rolled to the front and broke clear of Kyl’s Me Girl, with Gazmick Jet and Charlie’s Spirit the next in line.

Coming down the side Cool Gift started to drift off the fence, which en-abled Kyl’s Me Girl the opportunity of taking a short cut home.

In the straight Cool Gift out deep on the track was finding plenty and at the judge had a one and quarter lengths to spare over Kyl’s Me Girl in 30,09, with Charlie’s Spirit a neck away third. The 520 metres was clocked in 30.09 seconds and this was the win-ner’s fifth win at headquarters.

Cool Gift, by Big Daddy Cool out of Chris’ Gift, notched his fifth win at the Glebe venue, whilst overall he’s had 46 career starts for 14 wins and 12 plac-ings.

Kyl’s Me Girl (Big Daddy Cool x I Love Lucy), trained by Adam Wade, has produced six wins and 12 placings from 34 career starts, whilst the Jenny Brown trained Charlie’s Spirit (History Lesson x Midnight Amber) after 22 starts has recorded seven wins and six placings.

ANDY LORD grabbed another city winner when Callamac Kid proved too strong in the Free For All and racked-up his 10th win at headquarters. Boxrise saw kennelmate, Jaruba well away from box three along with the black vested Wez Da Risk, who also looked for an early advantage.

Crossing the field leaving the straight Wez Da Risk took them to the back, however, was quickly collared by Arena Flyer, who took up the front run-ning role. Arena Flyer broke away off the back, but it was Callamac Kid that emerged from the pack with a strong run.

Rounding the home turn Arena Flyer still led but was never going to hold out Callamac Kid, who is as strong an ox. Drawing away over the concluding stages, Callamac Kid went on to defeat Arena Flyer by one and a half lengths in 30.09, with Krazy Fraz getting up for third, a further one and a quarter lengths away. Callamac Kid, a son of Where’s Hoover and Prize Pack, to date has had 54 career starts for 16 wins and 18 placings.

Prepared by John Chapman, Arena Flyer (Pure Octane x Spring Vintage) has faced the starter 39 times for 12 wins and 10 placings, whilst Krazy Fraz

(Hallucinate x Cawbourne Fraz) has amassed 14 wins and five placings from 31 career starts for trainer, Ron Bell.

YVONNE HARRIS continues to have great success with Hazy Charm, who grabbed her second win at the city course and has taken home a cheque at all six city starts. The tiny 24kg chaser puts herself into every race and handles a field very well.

On this occasion Hazy Charm got away well from box six and matched motors with My Boy Caleb in the run to the first corner.

Having too much dash for her near-est rival, Hazy Charm took them to the back but didn’t keep the lead for long, as He’s So Shy dashed up quickly and sprinted clear. Sporting the pink singlet, He’s So Shy was zipping along, with Hazy Charm doing her best to stay in touch, but the leader looked ‘safe’ turning for home. Down the running He’s So Shy was being acclaimed the winner when he started to tip-toe to the line.

Charging along the fence, Hazy Charm powered over the top and grabbed He’s So Shy right on the line to score by a neck in 30.47, with Wally Slater back in third spot, a further three quarters of a length away. Hazy Charm is by Collision from Hazy Luck and after 33 career starts has produced five wins and 17 placings.

Trained by Jimmy Micallef, He’s So Shy (Spiral Nikita x Leprechaun Pace) has had 23 career starts for seven wins and nine placings, whilst Wally Slater (Slater x Lake Stunner), trained by Cliff Bell, has had 44 career starts for eight wins and 12 placings.

Chris Arletos’ Cool Gift ran 30.09 to snare a 5th Grade at Wentworth Park last Friday night. After leading from pillar to post, he downed Kyl’s Me Girl and Charlie’s Spirit quite comfortably.

Great attraction The Meadows December 21 WITH THINGS gearing-down heading into the Festive Season, Graeme Bate prepared a couple of good winners on last Wednesday’s 12-race card. That double took the master mentor’s tally to 107 for the calendar year to date (Including Sandown on Sunday), whilst nearest rival, Rob Britton is 28 behind with just one meeting remaining in 2011.

Bate opened the midweek fixture on a high, as the Paul Wheeler owned Ethel Bale ($2.10 fav) bounded to the front at boxrise and was never caught.

Having her fourth raceday outing, the daughter of Bit Chili and Bora Bale came from box three and defeated My Bella Me ($5.20) by a nose in a deceptive finish that even tricked the judges.

Spa Lachie ($11.20) wound up third, with the winner recording 30.90 to open her ac-count following three placings.

Brenna Bale, the $2.80 favourite, took out a Grade 5 heat in 30.15 to rack-up Bate’s double and was the third leg of a treble for owner, Paul Wheeler.

From box six, Brenna Bale cut across but Emotion Princess kicked up on the paint and Mix It Up ranged alongside three-deep with a lap to go.

Taking over rounding the first bend, Brenna Bale edged clear along the back then proved a bit too good in the end, scoring by a length and a half to Emotion Princess ($9.60), with third placed Fortius ($9.40) eight lengths further adrift.

It was the third win, all at The Meadows, from five starts for the daughter of Return The King and Spiral Bale, who recorded a new PB for the 525 metres trip.

Wheeler’s other winner was the Steve Collins prepared Barbara Bale ($5.20), who landed a 525 metres Grade 5 heat in a new PB 30.41.

Between 1995 and 2006 Mrs Green held various positions with the Newcastle and Hunter River District Association, as well as co-ordinating numerous functions and presentation nights. GREYHOUND RACING NSW (GRNSW) has advised the Mudgee & District Grey-hound Racing Club and the Moree Grey-hound Racing Club that it has not renewed their registration for 2012. At its December meeting, the Board of GRNSW determined that both clubs had not met the requirements of the Operating Stan-dards, which is a condition of registration for every NSW greyhound club. The decision means that both clubs will not be permitted to conduct races or trials from 1 January 2012. Both clubs have been invited by the Board to submit new registration applica-tions demonstrating their achievement of all 16 Operating Standards. Once a new appli-cation has been received it will be reviewed by the Board at its subsequent monthly meeting. Greyhound Racing NSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said it was im-

perative that all clubs in NSW met the Oper-ating Standards currently in place. “The GRNSW Board regard the Operat-ing Standards as a vital component of race club administration because they ensure adequate levels of service, efficiency, sol-vency, safety and accountability,” Professor Allan said. “At the beginning of 2011, the Board reviewed and streamlined these standards and the response from almost all NSW greyhound clubs has been excellent in re-gard to their documentation and proce-dures.” The consideration of Forbes & District Greyhound Racing Club’s 2012 registration has been deferred until the Board’s next meeting on 31 January 2012, due to the club missing the deadline for submission of the Operating Standards. Until a decision is made on Forbes’ application the club will also not be able to conduct races or trials from 1 January 2012.

Sad loss NEVILLE and Kay King would like to pass on their heartfelt thanks to Sandown Park’s vet, Dr. Alistair Smith, his staff and also the track boys who assisted in trying to save the life of top grade sprinter Zippstar.

The brilliant breaker led clearly into the first bend at Sandown Park last week but for some obscure reason tumbled and fell heavily.

Sadly, he was humanely put down on Christmas Eve after extensive X-rays revealed that he had suffered severe spinal damage and had lost the use of his two rear legs.

Neville told OTL that Dr. Alistair Smith was simply wonderful in his after-race treat-ment, and thought that the red and fawn 30 kg chaser may have suffered an aneurysm which clotted in his spinal cord.

“We were overwhelmed by the amount of calls we received over the weekend and would like to thank everybody that showed concern for Zippstar.”

“You never like to lose any of your dogs, especially in track accidents.”

“Thanks once again, and the response shows that our sports owners and trainers are a loving caring bunch of animal lovers.”

Out of the shadow GREYHOUND RACING can be an ex-tremely fickle business at times.

Let’s just imagine for one minute that Bekim Bale never raced.

We’d have been in awe of his litter brother, Heston Bale, wouldn’t we?

But he has lived in the shadow of his brother somewhat.

However, when they made their de-buts, both scored by huge margins in fast times at Sandown; Heston in 29.49.

They clashed in the final on Septem-ber 15, and as you may recall, Heston beat Bekim by two lengths in 29.14, and that time just happened to be a new track record.

Now I guess that might have sug-gested to some that Heston was the bet-ter of the two, although a lot felt if the boxes were reversed, more than likely Bekim would have won.

For the next two months, Heston only raced at Sandown, having eight more starts over the 515 metres, winning four in 29.46, 29.84, 29.58 and 29.02 respec-tively.

That’s pretty impressive stuff. He then ventured over to The Mead-

ows where he won a Grade 5 in 30.06. His very next start, however, was just

something that you can only call amazing. Contesting a heat of the Group 1

Silver Chief, the black flyer zoomed over The Meadow’s 525 metres trip in an amazing 29.45.

That smashed the track record by more than two and a half lengths - a re-cord set by Turanza Bale at 29.61.

So, by my recollections, that makes Heston Bale the first dog to have broken both Melbourne tracks sprint records, although I will gladly stand corrected if this is not so.

Of course, we now have a situation where litter brothers hold both Melbourne tracks’ sprint records, and I’d say that would be a first too.

I think the most awesome thought we’ve had about Heston Bale is that he’s looked like a dog that will get better the further he travels.

Mind you, the fact this dog is only 26 months of age also tells us he should get better over the next few months.

And of course he should improve with experience too.

What an awesome thought!

Any other time GLEN GALLON posted a flying 29.69 at The Meadows on Silver Chief heats night, and any other time that’d easily be a Best Of Night gallop. But of course, Heston Bale’s 29.45 meant that Glen Gallon missed time hon-ours over the 525 metres by four lengths.

Kind of hard to believe, isn’t it? I mean, how would you feel running a

length or so off what was the old track record then missing time honours by .24 of a second?

Still, as we know, four lengths can be just a “check” difference between two dogs.

Now there’s no doubting how good Glen Gallon is.

His Brisbane Cup win when he ran down Geelong and Melbourne Cup win-ner, Dyna Tron, was made to look even better after Dyna Tron took out the Group 1 Hobart Thousand.

That’s form stacking-up very nicely. What a race MENTIONING the Hobart Thousand final, and what a race that turned out to be.

A great field, and at the end it turned into a two-dog war.

It is rather odd watching two dogs go hammer and tongs like that all the way down the straight; odd in the fact that you’re actually barracking for both dogs simultaneously.

Both deserved to win, neither de-served to lose, and in reality, a dead heat would have been a fitting result.

Dyna Tron and Rewind put on one of those Bonecrusher/Waverley Star exhibi-tions down the long Elwick straight, and for mine that was one of the best finishes we’ve seen in a big race this year.

Top stuff! Mind you, how about the run of Dyna

Bert to get third? Gee, he’s well overdue to win a big

one. For Dyna Tron, this has been a re-

markable effort to do what he’s done - win the Geelong Cup, the Melbourne Cup and the Hobart Thousand - with a great effort squeezed between the latter two when pipped in the Brisbane Cup. Ole Pedro UP IN “Steak’n’kidney”, Noble Pedro took to Queen Lauryn’s Wentworth Park 520 metres track record, shaving it from 29.44 to 29.43. It’s a funny thing with sprint records, that’s sort of how you expect them to be lowered, a little bit shaved off here and there. The son of Where’s Pedro and Miss Beeslee has always been able to run time from day one and he’s posted some slick times on tracks such as Dapto and Bulli. He’s also scored over 600 metres at Dapto, as well as winning up the straight at Appin, so he has a bit of versatility about him.

I get the feeling that both he and Heston Bale may have also created a first by running metropolitan track records on the same night in two different states. Hmm, records TRACK RECORD times are a great sub-ject to get into an argument about. You’ll always have opinions divided when some dog posts a time that people don’t think the dog is capable of running.

As I always say, check to time of the second dog, as that’s the best indication of whether a track record is indeed legiti-mate.

Okay, so bearing that in mind, let’s have a bit of a squiz at the two records that went by the wayside on Saturday December 17, just to be certain.

At The Meadows, Heston Bale re-corded a flying 29.45.

It’s worth remembering that a Group 1 winner, Glen Gallon ran 29.69 and Cape Hawke 29.73, with only one other winner breaking 30.00.

We all know Heston Bale is a quick dog, so what did he win by and who ran second?

Well, he won by 12¾ lengths, which is near enough to .80 of a second.

Just the winning margin should be enough to suggest the time is right.

Gordon Bale was the dog to run sec-ond, so his time is 30.25, whilst his PB was 30.34 prior to the race.

We’re talking .09 here, which is a length and a half, and my call would be that Gordon Bale, being a young dog and on the up, he probably has improved at least that since he ran his PB.

Noble Pedro won by 10¼ lengths, beating Devine Law, with that galloper’s over the line time being 30.08.

He has a 29.96 PB on the track, so again, he verifies the winner’s time.

The verdict - well in my opinion, both times are true and correct!

Great broodie OR CATRA is a great brood bitch, make no mistake about that. As you may recall, she had two of her sons contest the final of the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup, with one of those, Zipping Malfoy scoring.

The next Group 1 staying race on the calendar is the Sale Cup, and Or Catra had three of her sons qualify for the $75,000 to the winner event.

Now if you’re wondering why this broodie is so special, perhaps looking at her breeding is a great place to start.

Her sire, Brett Lee needs no intro-duction whatsoever, whilst her dam is Gold Serenade.

Gold Serenade is a daughter of Golden Currency and Clare D’Loon, and she’s by Ginger from Key Dancer.

I’d be here all day giving you the offspring of Gold Serenade that were top notch, so I’ll name just one other, Zarbo.

She is the dam of chasers such as Mogambo and Lady Arko.

Back to Or Catra, and her three sons in the Sale Cup are litter brothers, Kinga Will and Kinga Zac (x Bit Chili) and Zip-ping Lad (x Malfoy).

The Sale Cup final, booked in its traditional Boxing Day slot, continually has a great field, and this year is no ex-ception.

Certainly one of the more popular staying events we have on the racing calendar, and a credit to the Sale Club. Interesting conditions I WAS having a look through the AGRA Racing Calendar to see what we had coming up in the New Year.

The majority of pups contesting the Silver Chief and the Laurels Classic might be able to head north for a couple of Group 1 events at The Gardens.

The National Derby and National Futurity are scheduled to kick-off on January 20.

Whereas the Silver Chief and the Laurels Classic are for pups born on or after June 1, 2009, the two races at The Gardens are for pups whelped on or after July 1, 2009.

Interestingly, these two races are limited to 48 greyhounds apiece.

I would assume that’s the Best 48 in the grader’s opinion.

So there you are, places are limited! Perth heats up LOOKING a bit further ahead, the action moves to Perth at the end of January when the Group 1 Galaxy and the Group 1 Perth Cup are to be run.

The Galaxy is for the Best 32 plus reserves chasing an $80,000 first prize, and of the Best 64 plus reserves in con-tention for the Cup, the carrot at the end is $140,000. Repeat matings THIS has been a very hot topic for quite a while now and there are those who are totally for it and those who are totally against it.

At the end of the day there are really no rules as to how this all works out.

Some repeat matings have been better than the original, some have been worse.

If someone can ever figure out why and bottle it, they’d be rich.

Anyhow, Black Top is regarded as one of the best stud dogs Australia has ever had.

Two bitches were frequent visitors to Black Top, two great matrons to say the least.

The first of those was Busy Beaver, who was sent to Black Top seven times.

Yes, you read right, seven! Her first visit was in 1966 and three

pups in that litter were Busy’s Charm, Top Bomber and Zoom Top.

Gee, you’d really be hard pressed to beat that trio, wouldn’t you?

Still, no harm trying, even if you don’t better that litter, you still should get some good pups.

According to a note on Greyhound Data, her second litter didn’t race due to contracting a virus.

Litter number three contained chas-ers such as Busy Bomber and Zoom Again, not quite the standard of the first litter but real top quality nonetheless.

Throw in chasers like Bettina Zero, Busy’s Duke and Top Em All, to name a few, and you can say that in Busy Bea-ver’s case, repeat matings were success-ful, but not quite as successful as the original.

The second brood bitch to pay a few visits to Black Top was Elsie Moss.

She had three litters to Black Top, plus in between a litter to Which Chariot, so her visits were not consecutive.

Her first litter produced Bill Moss, Clay Moss, Miller’s Moss, Molly Moss, Rose Moss and Top Moss.

Phew, pretty darn good, eh? Her second litter produced Andy

Moss, Beverley Moss, Chris Moss, Me-

teor Moss, Miami Moss and Shy Moss. Some may say better. Litter number three left Anne Lewis,

Danny Moss, Kiwi Moss, Murray Moss and Ruby Moss, well, for mine, not quite as good as the previous two.

Mind you, Elsie Moss probably would have thrown champions to a Golden Lab-rador, to coin the late Neil Dicks.

Not that Which Chariot was a Golden Labrador or anything, in fact, he was the only genuine rival to Black Top, but his litter with Elsie Moss produced Gaye Moss, Honey Moss, Joe Moss, Max Moss, Mister Moss and Pearl Moss, and as some will gladly tell you, that was Elsie Moss’s best.

The other brood bitch that I love to draw on is Gorgeous Babe, and I’ve been down her road many times and extolled the virtues of most of her progeny from Rocket Jet.

She probably is the best argument for repeat matings, as hers just seemed to get better and better.

Of course, no one will ever know what they might have produced had they gone to different sires, like Elsie Moss, they might have produced better, then again they may have thrown total duds, we’ll never know.

But at the end of the day it is a deci-sion only a breeder can make, as he’s the one paying the stud fee, doing the work and paying to rear the pups, if he so de-sires.

Mind you, if I had a bitch that had just produced a great litter to a certain dog and I only ever sold the pups I bred, I know where I’d be going the next time the bitch is on season.

But that’s a business decision, isn’t it?

Next week THE YEAR is nearly over, and in next week’s edition my annual GOTY Awards will be revealed. A few surprises perhaps, then again, maybe not, you’ll find out next week.

Happy New Year SEEING as this is the last column for 2011, I’d just like to take the opportunity to wish all our readers a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

May you own, train, breed and back plenty of winners in 2012.

Your Say “Uwere Wright” stated, “Good call on Kinga Will, I see he just made the Group 1 Sale Cup.” He did that, and he’s in it with a great chance too. “Great Stuff” asked, “Wasn’t the Hobart Thousand final a great race?” I certainly was! “Happy Reader” with, “Thank you NGF for all your great stories and great form, and to you Mr Treeman, for all the great ad-vice you give.” Well thanks, and here’s some more good advice, just keep on reading NGF. “Hard Nose” back with (in part), “Actually, you chose to compare two great dogs with two that will be duds, in my view.” Actually, I think I said that we should compare two dogs of similar lines with each other, whilst the other dog should be compared to an equally similar dog, not one against the other. As for your prediction, that is duly noted on all four dogs, and yes, I do tend to agree with you on the dog you seem to have a set against......hehe. This week’s Teaser WITH next week’s column being the GOTY Awards, there’ll be no Teaser this week. Last week’s answer THE answer to last week’s Teaser: THE GRAND CHAMPION, see by name, he’s the world’s greatest, but in reality, he certainly is one of the greatest ever any-how.

Saiga antelopes The saiga antelope of Kazakhstan has been the subject of some much-needed research recently.

These once-abundant creatures have been harvested for their horn, which is highly valued by Chinese traditional healers and by unregulated hunting in this lawless part of the world.

On top of this decimation of the population, the remaining antelope have been dying in unison.

Mass deaths in this region of the world, and for once the Russians are not to blame!

The Royal Veterinary College in London has been called in to investigate, and a physician with a name worthy of a character in the movie Borat, Dr. Kock, was despatched to find out the cause.

His conclusion was that they simply had too much food and were making pigs of themselves on the lush spring grasses, which was sickening them to death.

The interesting thing about this story is that it has made headlines in a recent

trade magazine for veterinarians. There are only two conclusions that I

can draw from this event… either one, the editor believes that within our profession there is a deep interest in the welfare of the Saiga antelope and the Kazakh environment, or two, there is very little other research to report on.

My guess is that the second scenario is much more likely, and the next question is why is this the case?

Simply, it is a matter of economics, as proper reputable research is time-consuming and expensive.

The organisations with the most money to spend on research are the drug companies, who will only publish research beneficial to their product and the conservation organizations, who are

funded by the chardonnay swilling, latte sipping set that inhabit cities around the world and have their views informed by the National Geographic channel.

The need for ongoing research in our industry is important.

It is not only to generate information that may be useful and improve the health and well-being of our patients, but it is also a vital defence in the protracted game of poker that all the racing codes are engaged in, with the welfare lobby funded by the same chardonnay and latte drinkers as above.

As an industry, I believe we must have robust, compelling and ongoing evidence that our industry is pro-active in the care of its four-legged participants.

A track record of identifying and solving health problems will provide a solid counter-argument to the continual accusation of the racing codes being animal users and abusers.

The dam is from a good line and has already produced plenty of win-ners, which suggests the future pros-pects for these youngsters is bright.

Email WE received an email that read: Hi, just wanted to let you know of my recent whelping of a litter of five - 3 males and 2 females.

The whelping is Dyna Lachlan (Go Wild Teddy x Benden Flex), the 2010 Australia Cup winner - and Mystique Angel (Tims Crow x Miss Spin)(Kobble Creek x National Pride).

Mystique Angel comes from a line of Group and track record hold-ers, including Rockys Run (Group 1 Paws Of Thunder), Sallys Run, previ-ous 400 metres Gosford track record holder, 2005 Golden Easter Egg fi-nalist, Joeys Run, Group 2 2005 South Coast Cup winner, Rollys Run.

Mystique Angel was unraced due to her shattering her wrist and stopper bone.

She certainly looked the goods for being a top notch performer and was kept for breeding.

I hope this information is of some help for your breeding section.

Thank you and Merry Christmas - Margaret Bright
