From the Family that continues to throw FREAKISH ability

Flying Penske x Classy Creek April 2007

A very honest race dog out of a freakish litter and a line that continually claims Group races and track records. Symmetry's versatility saw him win and compete at Group level over sprint, middle and staying distances. Symmetry was never protected or retired early with a stud career in mind. He raced the very best, week in, week out, over any distance in any State. If you value Longevity, Hard Chasing, Field Sense, Ability, the freakish element, and most of all, a strong Family Line, then consider Symmetry when making your sire choice. In addition, if you would rather race in the city (500m plus) instead of country 390m tracks, then Symmetry may be the right choice Winner of 24 of 45 - earning over $250,000 in prize money Feature race winner over 500, 600 & 725. Including :- ♦ 2nd Melbourne Cup, Group 1 ♦ 1st Sale Cup, Group 1 ♦ 1st Rookie Rebel Group 2 ♦ 1st Adelaide Interstate

Challenge, Group 3 ♦ 1st Perth Cup Consolation,

Group 3 ♦ 3rd The Dawson, Group 2

RACING ROYALTY

Symmetry's Dam, Classy Creek, herself a track record holder, has produced numerous track record holders and Group performers from only eight offspring.

These include ... ♦ Nellie Noodles, Group 1

winner and current track record holder The Meadows 600 & 725 m, Shepparton and Mount Gambier.

♦ Pickle Mickle W.A. National Distance representative, and

♦ Sand Burner.

Symmetry hails from the brilliant Ivers' line that has already produced Group winners and track record holders, Lucy's Light, Quidame, Texas Gold, Pickle Mickle, Sand Burner, and Swift Fantasy The idol of New Zealand.

Symmetry's Sire, Flying Penske not only gives a much needed outcross, but also a very high city winner to pups born percentage from his Australian prodgeny.

IN THE MANY YEARS I’ve been looking over the pedigree of greyhounds, I’ve come across many people with a fascination for the same.

People like Peter Rose, author of that yearly greyhound racing bible, Australian Winning Lines.

Pete is a greyhound racing fanatic. He lives for greyhounds, pedigrees and the

history of our industry. Then there is Darren McKenzie, a NSW

pedigree fanatic, who has helped WA breeder, Dan Biddle produce some outstanding greyhounds in recent years.

Darren and I converse occasionally, and I admit he has helped often with pedigree influences.

Two pairs of eyes is obviously better than one.

I also have a great mate in England, who has spent a lifetime in greyhound racing and has advised breeders on a number of highly successful matings… even an English Derby winner.

He is Floyd Amphlett, the Editor of the Greyhound Star.

It is Floyd who two decades ago wrote a book about breeding the greyhound and in it recommended 10 breeding rules.

All of them are apt today, 20 years later. I am sure THAT Floyd will not mind if I reprint

them here for all to ponder. They are: 1. Never judge a stud dog too early, either positively or negatively, and never on the basis of “hand-picked” dams.

Never forget though that the overwhelming

majority of dogs that go to stud will fail. 2. Most stud dogs are “much of a muchness”.

At either end of the scale are dogs who can ruin a litter, all the way through to dogs who can add ability and positive traits. 3. Assessing stud dogs is not just about “good or bad”.

Examples – some dogs will throw good fast offspring, but too few of them.

Some throw slow, genuine graded dogs. Some throw predominantly ungenuine

progeny. Given enough matings, most dogs can throw

a star or two. 4. Don’t be limited on the meaning of “ungenuine”.

Fighters are on most breeders’ hit lists, but equally bad are dogs who don’t try if they don’t lead, dogs who wait in front, dogs who lose motivation after a dozen or less races, and others who have never had a strong chasing instinct. 5. Badly bred sires or dams seldom breed on.

In those rare occasions that they do… fill yer boots! 6. In terms of breeding potential, if good bloodlines are worth one star, and track ability is worth another star, good breeding and track ability combined is worth five stars. 7. Pure pace crossed with pure pace seldom works. 8. The opposite techniques “outcrossing” and “in-breeding” can both be highly potent, but only with high calibre materials. 9. Rearing matters at least as much as breeding.

10. There are never any guarantees in breeding, only guidelines.

Floyd makes a lot of sense with every point he makes.

Let’s take a look at some of the topics. We’ve all heard the rumours about young

sires with their first progeny about to hit the racetracks.

I remember being talked out of using Worth Doing many years ago by a number of breaking-in tracks, who said his pups would not chase.

He was an outstanding sire, and when he died young he had no time to leave the legacy that he so rightly deserved.

He is still the greatest greyhound I have seen race.

His own sire, Brother Fox was the same. I heard too all the rumours about the first

offspring being “no good”. How wrong that proved to be. A very astute greyhound man in Queensland

told me many, many years ago that the time to judge a stud dog is 12 months after he has sired his first city winner.

That still holds true today. Floyd is right though. Most stud dogs do fail,

even champions on the racetrack, who get enough opportunities to prove themselves.

Let’s look at Paul Wheeler’s latest potential superstar, Bekim Bale, or his equally as fast litter brother, Heston Bale (Bartrim Bale - Amelia Bale).

Will they become superstar stud dogs? My answer is, without even thinking about it,

NO! The odds are against them. Now, before Paul Wheeler gets upset and

gets on the phone to take umbrage with me, let’s clarify what I just said.

I have made that statement simply because I know the facts and figures, as Floyd Amphlett so rightly points out, are against any stud dog when they go to stud.

It’s is a simply truth that the majority of them fail.

They either don’t get enough bitches, or don’t get the right ones.

I am certain a dog like Bekim Bale, with sub 29-seconds speed around Sandown, deserves his chance at stud.

There is also much more to be considered about his chances of becoming a commercial success than just his track record at Sandown.

I recently had a conversation with a Queensland breeder, who has just returned from a holiday in Ireland, where he spotted a very fast young dog by the Derby winner, College Causeway, a son of our own Go Wild Teddy.

The Queensland breeder was in awe of this fast pup and immediately took steps to bring out frozen semen vials for his sire, College Causeway.

Whilst College Causeway is a highly promising young sire, let’s not get carried away.

That very special youngster’s name is Milldean Panther, and if any of you take the time to look at his pedigree you will see instantly he is in-bred 3x2 to Minnies Surprise and her litter brother,

Spiral Nikita. Milldean Panther also has two crosses of

Daleys Gold, two of Curryhills Fox and one of Skelligs Tiger… the latter two litter brothers and the first bred identically.

Of course College Causeway could be a success in Australia, but my mate in Queensland should make sure the brood bitches he puts to him carry Spiral Nikita to be able to reproduce the cross that is Milldean Panther.

Of outcrossing and in-breeding, I totally agree with Floyd… there’s a place for both.

Paul Wheeler is reaping the very fast benefits of his wonderful damline at the moment because the majority of his race stock is being bred back to Aussie lines.

I remember only five or so years ago many asking what had happened to the Wheeler line… where had it gone?

I have always believed what Paul does best is keep his own damline “safe”.

By outcrossing it regularly, he allows its dominant influence to keep coming through time and time again.

He is at the stage where No 6 on Floyd Amphlett’s list of 10 breeding rules is at the top of the tree for Paul.

He has a multitude of high class race bitches, bred in the purple going to stud.

But even with that being the case… breeders should always also go straight to No 10… there are never any guarantees in breeding, only guidelines.
