    Objective of Ground-Motion Database

    • A large multidisciplinary community-based research initiative to develop a comprehensive ground-motion database and multiple ground-motion models (GMMs) for subduction events• Assemble dataset of ground-motion records that are

uniformly processed and formatted• Assemble ground-motion database

    • Record metadata (source, site, path, recording)• Intensity Measures

    • Develop ground-motion models to estimate Intensity Measures for engineering applications• Spectral Acceleration• Duration• Directivity & Directionality• Spectral Damping

    • Provide access to the records for engineering applications

    Components of Ground-Motion DatabaseInstrument Recordings:

    • Processing, Filtering, formatting• Acceleration, Velocity, Displacement Time Series• Duration Characteristics• Response Spectra• Fourier Amplitude Spectra

Record Metadata Database:• Site & Source Metadata

    • Site Class and profile @ recording station• Earthquake Magnitude and mechanism

    • Path Metrics: Distance Metrics• Time-Series Recording Metadata

Public-Access• Record Flatfile• Selected Subset of time-series files

    Why a relational database?

    And not just a flatfile?

    • Data in the database is grouped in data-tables connected by keys

    • No duplicate data• More efficient to update

    • Less likely to introduce errors

    • Expandable

    • Can communicate with other databases

    • Easy to query and store

    • The flatfile is a product of the database

What is New in Subduction Earthquakes

    • Larger Magnitudes

    attenuates farther

    • Longer durations

    • Different effects of Damping

    • Two types of events:• Interface (larger magnitude)

    • Intraslab (closer distances)

    • Backarc/Forearc effects

    • Different Geographic regions• Non-ergodic models

    • Vertical Component

    Public Release of Ground-Motion Records

    • The real value in the database is the metadata

    • QA of the metadata requires many iterations and eyes

    • Cannot release records without metadata

    • Objectives of QA:• With such a large dataset collected from various sources

throughout we will have both errors and inconsistencies

    • The objective was to minimize errors and inconsistencies, maintaining repeatability of the data

    • Current ACTION: Release ~500 records

    • 2018 COSMOS TS attendees are beta-testers of this dataset. Please provide feedback.
