Letter From the Editor

While you are in New York, you might be interested in checking out the New York Flute Club. Founded in 1920 by eminent flutist Georges Barrère, composer Lamar Stringfield, and a group of their associates, The New York Flute Club is the oldest such organization in the United States.

Barrère’s idea in starting the Club was to provide a common meeting ground for professional, student, and amateur; a place where less experienced players could hear new and unusual music for the flute as well as the classic repertory played by fine artists; a place where all might find performance opportunities helpful to the development of their own talents.

Fun FactsFrom medieval times two methods of producing sound were used:

(a) blowing across a round mouth-hole as on the panpipes or transverse (side-blown) flute;

(b) blowing into a whistle mouthpiece (end-blown) as on the recorder or flageolet.

(c) Alto flute - The flute in G, transposing instrument notated a 4th above actual sound.

(d) Bass flute - Flute in C, pitched one octave below the ordinary flute (not, as sometimes miscalled, the alto flute in G).

(e) Bassettflöte - (German). Not a flute, but a 17th and 18th century name for a recorder of low pitch. Sometimes called Bassflöte

f) The word flute was used indiscriminately to denote both types during baroque period flute or flautoblown recorder.

g) So flutists like flautists.
