Ah, the legislative session has ended! Good or bad, left or right, it is our democracy at work and we are grateful to our legislators who invest of themselves in representing us.

The Chamber fought hard on a number of issues, winning some, scoring a couple of ties, and losing on a few. We were happy that the legislature and the Governor worked together on continued initiatives to support teachers and to strengthen our collective focus on public education. As employers and businesses, we need a quality workforce, and public education matters.

Your Chamber originally supported the Vikings Stadium in Arden Hills, reusing the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant land that has been abandoned for years. We would have liked to have seen this land developed, but we are grateful that the Vikings will remain in Minnesota and pleased that the new stadium

in Minnesota will be easily accessible from the Central Corridor Light Rail line.

We also fought hard for the Saint Paul Lowertown Regional Ballpark. We were not successful in finding funding for the stadium, but the legislature and the Governor did put money into a fund for worthy Civic projects and we will work with the City to make sure that the ballpark is a great candidate for that source of funds. Stay tuned, as I’m confident that this battle is not over and that the prospects for the ballpark, while challenged, are still very bright.

We owe a thanks to our East Metro legislators, from both parties, who worked hard to make sure that regional parity was on the table when investments in the Twin Cities are considered. The Twin Cities is successful as a region, and all elements within the region need to be strong for the whole to prosper.

Finally, thank you to you, our members. So many of you called your legislator or the Governor when we sent out an action alert. Your voice matters, and without your support our activities would just be one of many. When we band together, and speak loudly as one, our voice stands out. Thanks for making that happen.

Have a great summer. Hit the lake, do some fishing, and enjoy a great Minnesota summer!

Business Partnership Benefits the ArtsThe Flint Hills International Children’s Festival presented by the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, is underway in downtown Saint Paul, with the upcoming family weekend ( June 2-3) being its grand finale.

The world-class festival provides children and their families with the opportunity to experience international puppetry, dance, music, drama, acrobatics, and more. This year’s festival encompasses a total of 13 blocks in downtown Saint Paul.

The festival began in 2001 with the vision of presenting the best performing arts in the world for young audiences, while remaining accessible to participants from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Today the festival has reached more than 400,000 people and inspired the newest generation of children from across Minnesota.

For the past 12 years, Flint Hills Resources has partnered with the Ordway to bring the festival to Saint Paul and help make it affordable to the thousands of people who attend each year.

“The festival is an opportunity for Flint Hills to be a part of something extraordinary, something unique to Minnesota, and performances that inspire young people to be creative and dream big,” said Jake Reint, director of public affairs at Flint Hills Resources.

The partnership between the Ordway and Flint Hills enables the festival to continue to offer the best performances and most engaging family-friendly activities year after year. Hundreds of community

volunteers also donate thousands of hours of their time to help make this festival possible.

“This festival would not be possible without the support of the artists

Indoors at the Ordway, Lowry Lab Theater, and Landmark Center, four sets of artists will perform multiple times on Saturday and Sunday. A group of nine percussionists from seven different countries will mix traditional drumming with contemporary electronic sounds to create a unique musical experience. There is also a Canadian puppet show and a story about the swashbuckling adventurer Zorro. Each show is only $5 per ticket. You can purchase tickets to these shows here.

The festival also features free outdoor performances, a butterfly tent, a story time garden, interactive arts activities, face painters, magicians, balloon artists, international cuisine, and more in Rice Park and Landmark Plaza.

Festival-goers can ride Metro Transit buses and the light rail for free on June 2-3 with the Go Greener Pass.

These weekend activities for families will cap off a full week of School Days, when more than 16,000 students from across Minnesota will visit Saint Paul to see these performances.

We hope you enjoy Family Weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 3.

Your Chamber and Moore, Costello & Hart partnered in 2005 to create a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

At the Chamber’s May Membership Meeting, Dianne Krizan accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of the Minnesota Children's Museum. The Children’s Museum opened its doors in 1981 and over the years has offered each child a colorful, educational, and safe environment to explore exciting galleries and programs based on sound principles of learning.
