Who’s new at the Chamber

IN tHIS ISSue >>

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce2

Each year a tried and true pundit will explain how the new year is going to bring brand new challenges that we will have to address. This may be true, in purely a technological sense, but it is hardly true when you think of the core challenge of running a business. Each year you incorporate new techniques and strategies, but you never forget that good responsive service, a focus on your customers, and a willingness to go the

extra mile will always beat out the latest in gadgets or industry trends.

We are no different. Much will change in 2014 here at the Chamber. We envision a year filled with new challenges for the Chamber, both in serving our members and in working with our many civic partners.

But this won’t stop our core mission – to advance the economic success of our members and this region.

Look for us to do more, to be even more vocal for our members and this region, and to be an active, engaged presence in the civic debate. We know that 2014 will bring new things we can adapt to and work to use, but it will also bring another year where your Chamber will work hard, each and every day, to earn your trust and to make our business community the best place to work and live in the Twin Cities. New challenges arise every day, but a business prepared to meet those challenges head on will be here on December 31st celebrating another year of customer-focused success.

New year brings new challenges

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce3

Everywhere we turn we see convergence. This works with that, that works with this, and we are told every ounce of it will “cut costs and improve productivity.” If we had a nickel for every time we've heard that.

The reality is that technology abounds. It isn’t hard to find and it is definitely not hard to buy. For many it is a commodity. The only piece of the puzzle that is not commoditized is “making it work” and “making it work together.”

Making it work is a little more complex than hitting the "on" switch.

An example of truly “making it work” is a fast food franchise that Coordinated Business Systems works with.

Coordinated Business Systems first business engagement was over 15 years ago when we sold them some small multi-function printers to go in there sandwich shops. Today we manage their network infrastructure, provide a document management software to manage their massive HR burden, host a cloud based

Microsoft Office Suite and, yes, they still have multi-function devices.

The key is that they all work together and are managed. HR documents are faxed from small multifunction printers housed in each store to the main MFP (multi-function printer) at headquarters. The headquarters device is programed so it knows where the fax is coming from and based on the information contained in the documents are auto indexed, filed and immediately searchable.

In addition, the main MFP has the ability to scan directly to the hosted office suite taking a paper based document and opening it in their spreadsheet or word processing program.

The top trend in the imaging side of your business is that all of the Multi-Function devices have evolved into application based technology platforms that integrate with existing systems and processes. This new technology allows users to customize their device much like you would a smart phone.

Out of the box these devices are capable of making a copy, printing a page, scanning a document and sending or receiving a fax. Through the installation of applications those capabilities can be vastly extended to fit the environment they are in.

For example, in a legal environment the machine can be set up to break up large scans into smaller packets based on the court that you are sending to. In an education environment or any environment where testing is taking place, the machine can produce bubble tests and then grade the tests with a single scan. In a medical environment the machine can be set to scan and store insurance cards directly into an ERM system. The list goes on and on.

Regardless of your industry, your work flow and your existing system, there is a MFP based application that can enhance it.

Although technology has become much more complex and powerful these days, success still looks the same. When you deliver what you promise it will work. That is what we have been doing for the last 30 years at Coordinated Business Systems, and that is what we will continue to do for the next 30 years and beyond.

Connect with Coordinated Business Systems and we will help you with your copier and printer needs, your IT service needs, your document management needs and your telephone system needs.

Q. Brief overview of your organization and what you offer/sets you apart?

A. Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative serving members across the state of Minnesota and beyond. Over our 83 year history, we have adopted the traditional credit union member-first philosophy that is experienced from the moment you walk through the door. To us, you are more than a dollar sign, account number, balance,

or credit score. You are a person with unique stories, needs, goals and dreams, and you deserve to be treated as such. It is this experience that differentiates us from our peers across the financial industry. We will do what is right for you. We will provide banking with integrity and transparency. We will work to build a trusting relationship with you, and we will bring meaning into your banking experience.

Q. How long have you been an ambassador?

A. I joined the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador in October 2013. Though the role is still quite new to me, the group of Ambassadors and the support from Chamber staff make it easy to hit the ground running!

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member?

A. What’s not to enjoy!?! As one of the largest chambers in the State of Minnesota, the Saint Paul Area Chamber provides a meaningful way to engage with other members of our community. Already, we have seen the impact of our participation strengthen relationships with vendors and partners and deepen the community’s understanding of Affinity Plus. We have been introduced to events and opportunities we might not otherwise hear about, and we have been able to engage with a network of like-minded organizations with common causes. Not to mention, I have been able to make use of my own strengths while expanding my skill set and meeting extraordinarily talented people across the Twin Cities.

Mark Stutrud, President and Founder, Summit Brewing Company

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce12

In October of 2013, we purchased an adjacent property that includes a 40,000 square foot building and 3.5 acres of land directly behind the existing brewery. Sales, Marketing, and Administrative offices will be relocated into the new building in 2014, along with warehousing of packaging and POS material. In the second quarter of 2014, we will complete the installation of a brand new canning line in the acquired property. The building will be connected to the brewery’s new cellar by an elevated pipeline capable of transferring 40 gallons of beer per minute. The KHS can filler is state of the art packaging technology, with filling speeds up to 400 cans a minute. The KHS filler is manufactured in Waukesha, WI. The seamer, the device that puts the lids on the cans, is fabricated by Angelus of Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

Although Summit has been quietly investing an annual average of $1.7 million into the brewery over the past ten years, this is the most ambitious expansion since the new brewery was built in 1998. The truth of the matter is that we’ve hit the wall on capacity. We had to cut 12 brews last year due to capacity issues. As for the new canning line, expanding our beers to cans allows us to connect more with the outdoor culture of Minnesota and the upper Midwest, as well as adding a convenient alternative to glass.

What’s a fact about your business most people don’t know?

We donate our ratskeller or "community room" twice a week to non-profits for use as a fundraising space, the yearly value of which is estimated at $126,000!
