Kicking off the Freshman Year...

As always, the same emotion, feeling or whatever it’s called kicks in. Nervousness. New people, new classrooms, new lessons, new teachers. A dozen of new-s! This triggers our nervousness, but also our excitement for new things! Freshman year is a new start for all of us and a refreshing new state. We might all start it off there in the lonely corner, hiding yourself from the new people which later becomes your best friends, avoiding teachers, who then teach you the biggest lessons in life and the objects you soon use everyday for the rest of your life.

NERVOUS...!!!

EXCITED....!!!

Problemos?? Mga problema? 困难?Problems??

First of all the main problems of students advancing to a higher level. Harder subjects. The assessment load increase and increase and the creation of a week we all dread... Hell week! This work load causes us to cram, stress out and eventually, probably fail. This is due to bad time management and procrastination. This has been the main problem of all Xavierians not only in the freshman year.

Another new problem faced by me as a freshman is the new schedule... the oh so confusing 7-day cycle. This aims to train students to be responsible and diligent, but causes most people to forget materials in the lockers. This is insanely confusing to the students not used to it, but as you progress to the end of the year you adapt and get used to it in the end, so thats good!

The problem I also encountered as a freshman, and although it may also be a good thing, it is a problem. The new world. We may be excited about learning new things, new ways of life, but we also have a hard time adapting to the new world, which is high school. This is a problem I coped with and eventually solved. Everyone will eventually solve this problem and only once you do, can you truly enjoy the world of high school.

Projects/Test

What you get when you study

The tests and projects in high school are very different from in grade school. In grade school we had more quizzes and each quiz is only worth around 10% of the class standing area of our grades. In high school, LT’s and projects can be worth 20% of our grade.

I found out that I have to study and work hard for every test and project so that I can get a high grade and not fail. At the start of the school year, I would not study hard sometimes and I would get low scores like Cs. This is why I have to study hard in high school.

What happens if you slack off

Teachers and Administrators

The subjects taught in high school are just the same as in grade school. It is important to know your teachers and administrators so that you can talk to them when you have problems.

Melvin J. Gallardo is a computer teacher and club moderator in Xavier. You can know more about him in his blog at mjgallardo.wordpress.com.

Dr. Joseph Ng is my class adviser at H1F. He is a Science teacher.

It is especially important to be more familiar with your class adviser, guidance counsellor and your student supervisor as they will help you when you have problems.

Program

School Fair

The school fair is a very anticipated event for the students in Xavier. It usually happens every February and lasts for one whole weekend. Every Grade 8- High 4 class has a booth and everyone is required to have a shift.

Our class’s fair booth!!

It is a very fun event that most of the students are excited for. Even if it takes a lot of time and preparation to have a successful booth, it is very fun and interesting to do.

Freshman year is really a great start and a heck of a way to kick of the amazing high school years. You really learn a lot from every single experience, activity and development. Remember to cherish every single day and live life to the fullest during your days in high school, because this is one of the moments you will never get back and one of the best moments in your entire life!
