Challenges to automation …
Worldwide, there are well over amillion industrial robots in opera-tion, with over 100,000 new robotsinstalled every year, represent-ing some $19 billion annually, ifsoftware, peripherals and systemsengineering are included.
The automotive industry once ledthe drive to robotize. However, to-day, food and beverage producers;
the electrical/electronics industry;chemical, rubber and plastics; andthe metal products and machineryindustries are continuing to robotizeoperations.
What drives this growth? Prices forrobots have plummeted, and qualityhas increased. Robots now cost halfof what they did in 1990. Mean-while, automation systems and proc-ess control have radically changed.Today’s machines are electrically-driven, and control systems havemuch improved through Programma-ble Logic Controllers (PLCs), Dis-tributed Control Systems (for heavyprocess, large-scale applications),and new PC-based Control Systems.
What robotic and machine toolmanufacturers expect of a cablesupplier:
• High performance for ef cient in -tegration and distributed control.
• Quality, reliability and durabilityto avoid costly stoppages.
• Availability and fast delivery for
production line exibility.
• Resistance to harsh environmentsand imperviousness to EMI.
• Safety for personnel, e.g. lead-and cadmium-free, and easyrecycling.
• Conformity to internationalstandards, and cross-industrycompatibility.
• Excellent service, from testing tosupport and maintenance
Assembly lines require a completerange of highperformance roboticcables for production ef ciency andprocess control.

… require MOTIONLINE ® reliable and exible cables
One weak link can interrupt theproduction chain and delay thedelivery of a product resulting innancial loss. To prevent this, Nex-ans manufactures a full range ofMOTIONLINE® reliable, dynamiccables to assure the interconnection, control and process efciency ofrobots and owlines.
Nexans offers a wide scope of
cable products for automation underits MOTIONLINE™ brand that con-form to all major international safetystandards, such as German (VDE),Canadian (CSA), American (ANSI)Chinese (CCC) and UL worldwide. We also frequently design and en-gineer a special cable to deliver thevital combination of high-perform-ance, reliability and long life. Thisis especially true for custom-mademiniaturized installations.
We supply everything from miniatur-ized control cables to state-of-the-artindustrial Pronet cables to bringthe ofce and the production oorcloser together. Efciency beginswith an up-front requirement analy-sis. Then, our Nexans research cent-ers test the cables currently used, and strive to surpass them in termsof performance, durability, chemical
and oil-resistance.
This move from benchmarking totheory and then back to practicalimplementation results in customizeddesigns, modularity and appropri-ate materials that can t neatly intothe entire production process. Thus, together with the world’s leadingrobot and industrial equipmentmanufacturers, we are creatingstandards to streamline automationworldwide.
• A full range of products forpower and control functions.
• Interconnectivity to merge boththe analog and digital worlds.
• Optimized conductor andinsulation materials (no shrinkageand low hydrolysis).
• Special designs to maintain
electrical parameters throughoutthe life cycle.
• Easy strippability and connectivityfor installation and replacementease.
• Fire- and heat-resistance forsafety and performance.
• Imperviousness to oils, fats andother chemical agents.
• Technical support tailored tocustomer needs.

Bus & Data Cables
Industrial Ethernet is the name given to the use of theEthernet network protocol in anindustrial environment, for automa-tion and process control. A numberof techniques are used to adaptthe Ethernet protocol for the needsof industrial processes (e.g. PROFI-NET), which must provide real timebehaviour. By using non-proprietaryprotocols, automation systems fromdifferent manufacturers can beinterconnected throughout a pro-cess plant. Industrial Ethernet takesadvantage of the relatively largermarketplace for computer intercon-nections to reduce cost and improveperformance of communicationsbetween industrial controllers.
PROFIBUS DP
(Decentralized Peripherals) is usedto operate sensors and actuators viaa centralized controller in produc-tion (factory) automation applicati-ons. The many standard diagnosticoptions, in particular, are focusedon here.
Description of eld bus systemsPROFIBUS PA (Process Automation) is used tomonitor measuring equipment viaa process control system in processautomation applications.
Controller-area network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a vehiclebus standard designed to allowmicrocontrollers and devices tocommunicate with each other withina vehicle without a host computer.CAN is a message based protocol, designed specically for automotiveapplications but now also used inother areas such as industrial auto-mation and medical equipment.
DeviceNet is a communication protocol usedin the automation industry to inter-
connect control devices for dataexchange. It uses Controller AreaNetwork as the backbone technolo-gy and denes an application layerto cover a range of device proles.Typical applications include infor-mation exchange, safety devices, and large I/O control networks.
INTERBUS is a serial bus system, which trans-mits data between control systems(e.g., PCs, PLCs, VMEbus com-puters, robot controllers etc.) andspatially distributed I/O modulesthat are connected to sensors andactuators (e.g., temperature sensors, position switches).
AS-Interface (Actuator Sensor Interface, AS-i) isan industrial networking solution(physical layer, data access methodand protocol) used in PLC, DCS andPC-based automation systems. It isdesigned for connecting simple eldI/O devices (e.g. binary ON/OFFdevices such as actuators, sensors, rotary encoders, analog inputs andoutputs, push buttons, and valve
position sensors) in discrete manuf-acturing and process applicationsusing a single 2-conductor cable.

Bus cables ensure a reliable data
transmission within an industrialenvironment. Various types ofbus cables are available in orderto connect machine parts withthe PLC at the eld level or toconnect PLC to the managementlevel of a factory. The bus cablesare designed for 2- or 3-dimen-sional exible applications.

Instructions for Installation*
Tensile stress max. 50 N/mm 2 conductor cross section for xed installation, max. 20 N/mm 2 conductor cross section for exible horizontal installation
Utilization in the daisy chain Regular version (1 sheath construction with/without screen braid)
- minimum admissible bending radius: 12 x D- maximum admissible acceleration: 5 m/sec.2*- maximum admissible displacement: 100 m/min (180 m/min)**- guaranteed bendings (ati ≥ 12xD): min. 10 Mio *
D...... Conductor cross section (mm)* for cables > 16 mm2 reduced requirements2 (acceleration ≤ 1 m/sec 2, ≥ million bendings)** for cables ≤ 6 mm2 conductor cross section+ The instructions for installation of the manufacturers of energyconducting chains must be observed in addition.
- maximum admissible horizontal displacement: 5 m- alternating bendings not admissible- Torsion is not admissible for cables with overall screen(torsion for a maximum ± 30°/m are admissible)
For deviating (higher) requirements, like
- smaller bending radii- larger horizontal / vertical displacements- higher velocities / acceleration- alternating bendings- torsion et cetera
there are special constructions upon demand.
