WILD THING:Don’t be scared by the creature on our front cover! This artwork was created by Hannah Lee as a kindergartner in Ms. McGill’s art class at Williams School. This assignment to create an original wild thing based on Maurice Sendak’s book clearly inspired her, as her artwork does us.

CLUB INVENTIONJudi Fitts, DirectorEnjoy high-energy activities that encourage inventive thinking and creative problem solving, while applying science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. In Week 1, Innovate, you’ll investigate alternative ener-gies such as wind, solar, and hydro power to design and build your own creations; explore math topics like tessellations and topology to see how math patterns and relationships translate to the real world; and become en-trepreneurs as you rebuild a virtual world and restore its economy. You’ll also use objects you bring from home to build new inventions. In Week 2, Morphed, you’ll build STEM skills while developing bionic gadgets and exploring sensory illusions; make mor-phing vehicles that operate on land, in the air, and underwater; and tinker with circuits to develop design solutions to nature-based challenges, inspired by video messages from the National Inventors Hall of Fame. You’ll also take apart electronics from home and re-engineer their gears and gadgets to invent an epic, insect-themed pinball machine. In both weeks you’ll enjoy outdoor games and use available materials to create completely new games. Each week culminates in a pre-sentation for family and friends. Kids will be grouped by age; we’ll try to place you with your friends if we get your requests by May 30. Grades 1–6. Attention veteran inventors: Morphed is a new program, and Innovate was last offered in 2010. For more details on each of these programs, see our website.

ANIMATED SUPERHEROESAmanda Legere, InstructorCreate an action-packed short story featur-ing a spectacular superhero, sassy sidekicks, and of course, a vicious villain. Apply your technology skills and turn your story into a slide show full of flashy images and ex-hilarating narration, captured to an iPad or desktop computer. We’ll study the art of su-perhero stories and learn what pertinent plot details you need to include in yours. From there you’ll design a story map, craft charac-ters (using images you find and/or create), and dazzle us with your own thrilling story.

BOOTSTRAP: PRACTICAL MATH FOR PROGRAMMING VIDEO GAMESBootstrap staff, InstructorsBootstrap is a computer programming course with a twist—come learn programming basics in the Racket language, and use your skills to program your own video game using alge-braic and geometric concepts. In this class, you will work through the Bootstrap 1 and 2 curricula, learning solid program design skills such as: stating input and types, writing test cases, explaining code to others, and be-coming familiar with functions and variables. Throughout the course, you will put your knowledge into action to create a computer game of your own design. Once you learn Bootstrap, these skills can be put to use in other programming environments, and even in your math class! No programming experi-ence necessary. Grades 6–8.

INNOVATIONS*Chip Piatti, DirectorCome see why so many Innovations campers and staff count down the days from sum-mer’s end to next year’s camp. It’s more than that at this camp you choose your own activities and share them with other campers of every age, or that here you’ll write the script for your own commercial, build a to-scale dinosaur, or beat your favorite CIT in a fencing bout. There’s nowhere else where you can explore unique activities like architecture, aviation, and “spy kids,” alongside traditional ones such as arts and crafts, drama, swimming, team sports, cooking, and more. Innovations is something special you have to see and feel for yourself. Your personalized program is designed after you register and select your own activities. So join us this summer to make new friends and let your imagination and creativity come to life. Grades 1–7.
