With its 173 acres, the Tiergarten is a beautiful and very natural home for its 2,500 inhabitants of about 285 different kinds. Here you can find almost everything from the lion fish to the boa constrictor, the Andean condor and the South African ostrich, the wolf and the Western lowland gorilla to polar bears, lions and tigers.

Rhinos, buffaloes and giraffes can be seen here, too, and if you’re lucky some prairie dogs might cross your path on your way to the “kids’ zoo” where you can pet and feed goats and sheep in their enclosure and learn about indigenous farm animals like cows, pigs and horses, but also bunnies and guinea pigs. This is a wonderful experience for both young and old, especially if you grew up in a city…

Do you need a lunch-break now? Well, check out the cozy restaurant “Waldschänke” in the zoo. Here they offer you good food in a family-friendly atmosphere and in the beer garden children can spend their time on a little playground, or ride little kid-motorcycles. You should also not miss the so called “Aquapark” – the home of the black-footed penguins, sea lions and polar bears. Here you can watch the lively animals being fed and having fun diving and jumping in and out the water. Huge windows in their pools give the visitors an impressive insight into the animals’ behavior under

water which is full of energy and the joys of life.

Nuremberg’s famous polar bear Flocke can also be watched here while she is playing with her new friend Rasputin from Russia. By the way: Flocke is an am-bassador for climate protection which should be of interest to all of us because it is not just about the destruction of the polar bears’ natural habitat but our whole environment. It is significant that an animal like the polar bear that appears to be big and strong but is still so sensitive becomes a symbol for the whole of nature that needs to be protected.

Another highlight is the “Tropenhaus” (tropic house) where the Caribbean manatees, Malayan tapirs and two-toed-sloths, which look a little bit like straw-nests when they are taking their naps in the trees, live. On your way to the Tropenhaus you’re going to pass the gigantic aviaries where birds of prey like bald eagles and Andean condors can fly around.

It is always a lot of fun to watch the Guinean baboons and Barbary apes playing, running, fighting, jumping and climbing around in their enclosures. Maybe be-cause their behavior reminds us of ourselves and their

social structures do not differ much from our own ones. Who knows?

The biggest attraction in the Tiergarten is probably the dolphin show at the “Delphinarium”. The bot-tlenose dolphins and seals show tricks and play with their trainers. It is a pleasure to watch this because it shows deep confidence between the animals and the trainers. During the show the trainers also explain a lot of interesting facts about the biology, anatomy and lives of these sea mammals.

The old trees at the zoo create a wonderful atmosphere: In summer time when it’s hot they give shade and in the fall their leaves are a beautiful symphony of colors. It is not surprising that local wild animals like squirrels and foxes, gray herons and white storks do also feel comfortable at the zoo and that is why they are very common guests there.The Tiergarten makes it its duty to protect animals that are in danger of dying out and some animals born at the zoo are even brought back into the wilderness and into their natural habitats as soon as they are able to survive without human help. They work together with organizations that breed endangered animals in order

to keep them from dying out such as the “Europäische Erhaltungszuchtprogramm” and the EAZA, the Euro-pean Association of Zoos and Aquaria. It is the zoo’s highest goal to give the animals a good life that is as close to their natural behavior and habitat as possible. Big projects to still improve the living conditions of the animals at the zoo are a new dolphin lagoon and a new manatee-house.

The Tiergarten has about 2,500 parking spaces for its vi-sitors but it can also be reached by train. Just take a train to the central railway station in Nuremberg and then use the bus or the tram line 5 to the zoo. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the Tiergarten’s entrance just like little carts your kids can sit in and be pulled through the Tiergarten. Go ahead and enjoy a wonderful and informative day at the Tiergarten Nuremberg with lots of unforgettable experiences and fun for the whole family. This zoo is worth a trip during any season!

Several beach volleyball courts, a miniature golf course, table tennis, a billiard table and other game equipment offer further possi-bilities for leisure time activities. Large sunbathing areas invite visitors to relax.

To guarantee all visitors a fun stay at the pool, the City of Grafen-woehr has put together rules and regulations for the pool. They are posted in English and in German at the pool’s entrance. The most important rules are:

- Weapons and alcoholic bever-ages are not allowed on the pool’s premises.

- Absolutely no smoking is allowed around the toddlers’ pool, within the entire pool area, the changing rooms and the restrooms. The entire facility is to be kept free of cigarette buds.

- Breakable containers and glasses may not be taken into the pool area and into the area surrounding the toddlers’ pool.

- A shower must be taken before entering the pool. The pool may only be entered through the de-signated access pool areas.

- Access pools may only be en-tered barefoot and without flip-flops, or similar foot wear. For sanitary reasons, street shoes may not be worn in the pool area.

- For sanitary reasons, swimwear (bikini, bathing suit, swimming trunks or shorts) must be worn when using the adult and toddlers’ pools. Shorts, T-shirts and similar clothing is not allowed to be worn in the pools.

No free child care spaces at the Eschenbach Kindergarten

Th e kindergarten in Eschenbach has a capacity of 125 children and this capacity is currently exhausted. Th ere is simply not enough room for more children in the kindergarten building. Th e law says that German children have the legal right to a kindergarten space. But if one parent is American, and therefore a member of NATO forces and subject to the NATO Status of Forces Agreement, the child, whether it has the Ger-man citizenship or not, no longer has a legal right to a kindergarten space in a German facility. Subsequently,

the child can only be enrolled on a space-available basis. Unfortunately, the city of Eschenbach cannot change this inteernational law which was passed after World War II and adjusted after the fall of the Wall. Th is has to be done by the Federal Republic of Germany and its NATO allies.

Nevertheless, Eschenbach’s mayor Peter Lehr and the city offi cial in charge of the kindergarten, Werner Kosmale, who are both very concerned about this problem and the families’ needs, are working hard on a solution to this problem. Although it can’t be solved overnight, the town of Eschenbach is well on its way to help at least some families.

Th e city council has decided to establish a new day care group which allows the kindergarten to admit 25 additional children, ages three to six, hopefully by September 2009. As soon as the necessary structural changes to the kindergarten have been completed, these 25 new children can enjoy themselves by playing and learning new interesting things every day.

92655 Concierge came into being at an entrepreneur-ship seminar hosted in English by a local business consultant, Gabriele Murry. The two-day event was held at the Grunderzentrum in Grafenwoehr, a business incubation centre that specifically supports young enter-prises and promotes the efforts of new entrepreneurs. I quickly noticed that three out of four participants were women. All three of us women were military spouses.

In the course of registering my business, I was ultimately guided to the office of the wonderful Dr Niemeyer, Eschenbach’s resident Notar, to sign the necessary paperwork and explain the premise of my business plan. I aimed for the 30-seconds-or-less rule but ended up staying for well over an hour. Dr Niemeyer and I concluded our conversation in animated, total agree-ment – Grafenwoehr is an entrepreneur’s dream. No, wipe that – it’s a Mompreneur’s dream.

The subject of women’s entrepreneurship is dear to me. Prior to my current incarnation as Mother and Managing Director, I used to earn a living writing speeches and research papers that were presented at

global summits and conferences by the Chairwoman of an international women’s development organization headquartered in London. At its core, the premise of my work was this: one of the best ways to grow a sustainable and socially responsible economy, whether on a national or a local scale, is to ease the path for women in business.

This, in my book, means encouraging, supporting and guiding businesswomen in their efforts. This means offe-ring ready access to information, research and resources. This means enabling them to make full use of further training and skills development initiatives that will help them successfully launch, manage and grow their businesses. In a nutshell, this means investing in them.

The opportunities for entrepreneurial success in Gra-fenwoehr are unprecedented. Best of all, these op-portunities are still vastly untapped. Entrepreneurial women who find themselves in this pretty, well-placed Bavarian town are in a unique and enviable position, because the global recession has not made and is very unlikely to make much of a dent in these parts. It’s a similar story in many base-dependent towns all over the world – luckily for local business owners, whether they’re running Chinese restaurants in Heidelberg or beauty shops in Lakenheath, the military is largely recession-proof. A quick read of the official IM-COM press releases archived on the internet and a few things become immediately clear – there are big things in the works for Grafenwoehr. Together with Vilseck and Hohenfels, these three military communities are home to 25,000 American troops, their families and civilian personnel, and that doesn’t even take into account

the local Bavarian population (who, for good reason, affectionately refer to Grafenwoehr as ‘Little Chica-go’). Local business owners tell me that ten to twenty years ago, businesses in Grafenwoehr were very much geared towards Single Soldiers. Now, it is very much a Military Family’s town, and the businesses that are starting to spring up all over town, mine included, are a reflection of this.

Since launching my company, I have received a vast number of resumes from women, Germans and Ameri-cans, mostly military spouses, seeking employment with my company. All are highly qualified, intelligent, often multilingual women, nearly all mothers. Many of the cover letters and emails I receive confirm that whilst it is relatively easy for a German or EU national to find work or set up their own company (I said relatively), things are not so clear-cut for US military spouses and the rules are not especially clear, something I hope to address in a later column.

Personally, I’ve been extremely lucky in that I’ve bene-fited from the trusted advice and support of many good people in the German community, without whom I simply would not have managed to launch my business. I am aware, however, that other women with business ideas may not have this invaluable support network, which gets me thinking. I truly believe that mentor-ship and fellowship are critical to a woman’s success in business. Networking is essential to every woman who has taken that first step towards entrepreneurship and is now wondering – what now?

I see the need for a bilingual networking group that

specifically caters to women entrepreneurs operating or hoping to operate in the Grafenwoehr area, a regular yet informal gathering of local businesswomen who can share expertise and offer that all-important solidarity. There are very few statistics available (in English at least) on women-owned businesses in Bavaria, but it doesn’t take very long to ask around and gather a little local business intel.

There are gaps in this market that only women can fill. If you can merge a big-city business idea with a small-town marketing approach and highly personalized customer service, you are on to a winner. For a new business to flourish in this town, it must directly and intelligently market itself to the ethnically diverse, increasingly sophisticated, tech-savvy local consumer. It must speak to the Texan stay-at-home Mom in Netzaberg with 24 hour broadband, the German college student who

commutes to Bayreuth each day, the Hispanic Single Soldier, newcomers and long-time residents alike.

I’m very honoured to have been invited to cover busi-ness and women’s issues for this newspaper, and in future columns I will be touching upon everything from employment and entrepreneurship to pregnancy, motherhood and health awareness.

Grafenwoehr. four officers of The police auThoriTy weiden visiTed The elemenTary schools in Grafenwoehr, neTzaberG and vilseck wiTh Their puppeT TheaTer To Give children playful safeTy TraininG. They sure knew how To enTerTain The crowd.

The idea for the play was more or less a coincidence: the police authorities in Nuremberg and Munich already had puppet the-aters for safety trainings before the one in Weiden was founded. In 1999, the

Nuremberg puppet theater was invited to come to the Christmas party of the police authority Weiden. But seven weeks before the party Nuremberg had to cancel their performance in Weiden.

So the police officers in Weiden came up with the idea to entertain the children with their own theater and a short play. Within seven weeks, three officers built the stage for the puppet show, wrote the play, sowed the puppets and curtains with the help of their families, painted the scenery, and practiced the show.

The play was a great success and the officers have since toured elementary schools all over Germany with it. However it is not easy to book a puppet show because

the officers perform these shows in addition to their regular job as patrol policemen. The play called “Der verzauberte Kaspar” is about a funny guy called Kaspar and his friend, the dog, McGruff. A mean witch puts a spell on Kaspar so that he starts to do everything wrong on the streets.

All of a sudden he thinks, for example, that he can cross the street wherever he wants and not at the pedestrian crossing. He can only be brought back to normal if he does three things right which the witch tries hard to prevent. But with McGruff ’s and the audience’s help Kaspar can be saved. For the elementary schools in Grafenwoehr, Netzaberg, and Vilseck the play was translated into English.

The young audience really enjoyed the show. They were involved in the performance and therefor very excited while they repeated the rules of traffic they had learned at school. A song at the beginning set the right mood for the kids although it was in German: they clapped their hands and sang along as good as possible.

When the host of the show, police officer Werner Stopfer, asked for two boys and two girls to help him all children raised their hands to be chosen. With the help of officer Stopfer four children demonstrated how to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing and got a sharpener with the German police logo for their support. Behind the scenes, officers Georg Hüttner, Max Rößler, and Hubert Wittmann did a great job acting and producing special light and sound effects

that made the story even more exiting for the kids. Everybody had a great time.

In the end, several goals were achieved: Playful safety training teaching kids, that they never have to be afraid of police officers, and that police officers are always ready to help. Both, children and teachers absolutely liked the shows.

“We offer parents a very flexible child care concept,“ explains Ulrike Hubeny, the manager of the facility. “Here in Grafenwoehr we are allowed to care for ten children at a time. They are being cared for by Simone Reiter, a state-certified child care provider, and Martina Fenzl, a state-certified child care assistant. A certified day care provider giver will be added soon,“ she adds. Both child care providers speak English fluently. Reiter has previously worked at the U.S. Army’s Netzaberg Child Development Center.

Kinderburg offers a freshly prepared lunch, assistance with homework, a pick up- and drop off-service, a children’s birthday service and 24-hour child care by

arrangement. It is open Monday through Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early drop off and late pick up can be arranged upon request. The cost for child care ranges from 2.20 to 3.00 Euro per hour based on the number of hours booked. A special 10-hour child care ticket is available for 27 Euro. “During the Bavarian school

vacation this summer, we offer day care for 5.00 Euro per day without lunch,” says Hubeny.

Child care activities are based on Germany’s new child development and education plan. Kinderburg puts its emphasis on developing each child’s skills and abilities

to achieve tasks independently in a protected and caring atmosphere. Whether it is learning to eat alone, getting dressed, eating healthy, learning about personal hygiene such as brushing teeth or washing hands, or learning to communicate with others and how to play alone and with others, the staff of Kinderburg facilitates and en-courages all those skills according to the developmental stage of each individual child.

The bright rooms of the Kinderburg child care center with a cuddly corner, many toys and lots of room to play as well as a small garden invite children to stay.

The Kinderburg child care center is part of Zeit für Kinder e.V. (Time for Children e.V.), a private orga-nization that was founded five years ago by mothers from this region to provide day care. The organization already operates a very successful child care center in Altenstadt, near Weiden. The Kinderburg child care center in Grafenwoehr is supervised and certified by the Youth Services Office of Neustadt/Waldnaab County.

Please never leave your pet behind, or let it run free!!! Your pet is probably not going to survive! If it doesn’t starve, it might die from a broken heart! Bring your pet to an animal shelter (=Tierheim) in Amberg, Weiden or Bayreuth. They will gladly help you!

Allow me to introduce the three animal homes in the Grafenwoehr-Vilseck region to you:

Tierheim Amberg (www.tierheim-amberg.de), phone: 09621-82600

The Tierheim in Amberg was founded in 1975 and is located in the forest near Gailoh close to Amberg. 30 dogs, 40 cats and about 15 small animals live on 60,000 square meters. Your pet can spend its vacation here and it is not even expensive. For dogs the prices vary from 6 Euro to 9 Euro per day depending on the size of the dog. For one cat, you have to pay 5 Euro per day and for two cats 8 Euro per day. Small animals are charged by cages: Birds cost 1,50 Euro a day, hamsters 2 Euro, one guinea pig is 3 Euro while two guinea pigs are only 4,50 Euro and one bunny costs 3,50 Euro while they charge you 5 Euro per day for two bunnies. You have to pay when you pick up your pet again. Make sure your pet has all its shots and its vaccination card. Let them know as soon as possible that you want to bring your pet and that you want to make a reservation. If the Tierheim is too crowded in the main traveling season they will give you addresses and phone numbers of pet hotels nearby.

The animal home in Weiden is located in a suburb of Weiden called Schustermooslohe. It opened its doors on April 27, 1972. They have room for 25 dogs and 30 cats. Including the various small animals that live there as well, they take care of about 60 or 70 pets. Only dogs can spend their vacation at this animal shelter. You have to pay 8 Euro per day for a little dog and 10 Euro per day for a big dog.

Jutta Böhm, the director of the Tierheim Weiden since 1990, also owns the cat hotel “Kitty” in Schwarzenbach near Pressath (phone: 09644-6249). Please make a reservation for your cat as soon as possible because this cat hotel is quite busy. You have to pay 7 Euro a day for an all inclusive vacation for your cat and 12 Euro a day for two cats. Make sure your cat has its shots and is fixed before you bring it. If your German is not too

good, you should bring an interpreter with you to the animal shelter here in Weiden to make the conversation easier for you and Mrs. Böhm.

The Tierheim in Bayreuth was built in 1968. It has room for up to 65 cats, 30 small animals (there are bunnies, guinea pigs and rats) and either 20 big, or 40 small dogs. If you go on vacation, you can leave your cat there for 4 Euro a day and your dog for 9 Euro a day. If they don’t have any room for more guests they will also give you phone numbers and addresses of local pet hotels.

Please note that every animal shelter would rather admit your pet and keep it before you abandon it somewhere. Giving an animal to an animal shelter if you cannot keep it any longer is sad but leaving it behind is simply mean and heartless! And in Germany it is against the law!

Please remember that animals are living creatures just like human beings. They have feelings just like us: They can feel joy, happiness and confidence but also sadness, fears and pain. They aren’t toys and they are not to be pushed around. Having an animals means having responsibilities, just like having children does!

You want to help the poor animals stranded in the Tier-heim because their former owners passed away, didn’t have enough time anymore or simply lost their interest in their pets? Animal shelters depend on donations from the local society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Becoming a member of this society, only costs you 10 Euro per year but it helps the animals a lot.

If you do not want to donate any money, you can also drop off a few cans of pet food, some hey, old towels and blankets, pillows, cages, leashes, or any other pet supplies at the animal homes. They are grateful for everything!

You can also go there and pet cats (the Tierheim Bayreuth is seriously looking for cat-petters who spend time with the cats who feel lonely), or take a dog for a walk. That doesn’t cost you anything and makes an animal happy.

The Tierheim Amberg is closed on Mondays. Animals can be visited on Wednesdays and Sa-turdays from 2 to 5:00 p.m. and after that dogs can be taken for walks. Every day, dogs can also be taken for walks from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from Sunday to Tuesday and on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. in summer time, and from 3 to 6 p m. in the winter time.

The Tierheim Weiden is open for visitors on Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Only members of the local society for the

prevention of cruelty to animals are allowed to take dogs for walks here.

The Tierheim in Bayreuth is open every day from 2 to 5 p.m. except for Mondays and Thursdays. That’s when you can visit all the animals, pet the cats and take a dog for a walk. Please bring your ID card when

you want to take a dog for a walk, so they can register you. You have to be 18 years or older to be allowed to take a dog for a walk.

If you want to adopt an animal from a Tierheim, please check if you are really going to have enough time and room for your new friend. Do you have to work eight hours a day and is the dog going to sit in a cage all day long then? Are your children old enough for a pet, yet? Is anyone in your family allergic? Did you inform yourself about what your pet is going to need (long walks, how much food, special medications,…) and are you going to be able to fulfill all these needs? Are you going to be able to afford an animal and all the costs for pet food and vets as long as the animal lives? Who is going to help you if for some reason (e. g. illness) you can’t take care of your pet anymore?

The personnel at the animal shelters can answer your questions. The animal shelter is going to check your home to see if you can offer your new pet good living conditions. If you adopt an animal they are going to charge you for it because all animals from shelters have their shots and medical check-ups and they are chipped and fixed. When your new friend is living at your house people from the animal homes are going to come by and see how your pet is doing. The first priority of the animal homes is that the animals feel comfortable and are happy with their new families. Let it be our first priority, too!

After she had a bad car accident in October 2007, Alexandra was unable to work in the job she had learned after school and so she had to find a new job. This was not hard for her to do since she had always wanted to have something to do with animals (not only in private). So she became a dog and cat groomer. That’s how she made her dream come true. “I love my job and every morning I’m looking

forward to a new day full of work,” says Alexandra.

Her job training took place in Altötting at Mrs. Kurzeja-Farrnbacher’s office who has worked in this wonderful job for more than 40 years now. She is famous from radio and TV and a lot of VIPs are her regular customers. In addition to the regular training, Alexandra was allowed to learn from Mrs. Kurzeja-Farrnbacher for three more months and she was able to acquire more techniques. The diploma guarantees a well-founded training.

The idea of a mobile pet grooming service is great! Your pet is at home and does not have to suffer from the stress of riding in the car, or being in unknown surroundings. This also means less stress for you as the owner. The happier your pet is, the happier you are, right?“Zottel” means something like “shaggy” by the way and this is what Alexandra is working against. Her services include:

extra money for gas): If you live up to 10 km away it costs 4 € extra and if you live up to 25 km away from Graf, you will pay 8,50 € extra.How much you have to pay for a hair cut depends on your dog’s condition (it may cost 5 € extra if the fur is in a bad condition) and on the dog’s size:- Little dogs (up to 22 cm body size) like Yorkshire Terriers, Chihu-ahuas, or Dachshunds cost 18 €.- For medium dogs (between 25 and 40 cm body size) like West highland Terriers, Maltese, and Poodles you have to pay 25 €.

- For large dogs (between 43 and 60 cm body size) like Border Col-lies, German Sheppards, and Golden Retrievers Alexandra charges you 33 €.

The Fishing Club Grafenwoehr (Fischereiverein 1881 Grafenwoehr) was established in 1961 by local lake ow-ners and the former Regional Fishing Club Eschenbach. since then, active fishermen had a voice in the club. a year later, teacher Dominikus Kneidl was proclaimed the first fisher king after the king fishing event.

„In1962, the first fisher fest was hosted in Gmünd where it remained until 1978,“ says club president Herbert Benkhardt. The fishermen still have a close relationship with Gmünd despite the fact that the fisher fest has been hosted in Grafenwoehr for thirty years now because every year, they cast their fishing rods in the Opel-Weiher in Gmünd.

Fishing started to become very popular in the late Seventies. „Currently, we have 290 active fishermen, 40 of which are youths. With its 728 members, the fishing club has become the second largest club in Grafenwoehr,“ Benkhardt announces proudly.

The club owns 27 hectares of lakes and 21 hectares of rivers. They range over 26 kilometers from Bärnwinkel to Steinfels. The club invests 25,000 Euro per year into fish that is put into the rivers and lakes. Popular fish

are ashes, barbels, and samlets. “The water quality is very high,“ according to Benkhardt.

“The German-American Friendship Fishing Event that is hosted on a rotational basis has fostered good con-tact with the fishermen stationed at the Grafenwoehr Training Area,“ emphasizes Benkhardt. It is always a lot of fun just like the competitions on the city pond which have become a regular part of the fisher fest. “I’m not sure yet which competition is awaiting the „sportsmen“ this year. But it doesn’t matter: whether it’s water skiing, a pig trough race, or a fishermen jousting event -- it will definitely be a lot of fun,“ assures us Herbert Benkhardt.

All Grafenwoehr residents and our American friends are invited to the event. The fisher fest takes place on June 27 and 28; the king fishing event a week earlier on June 21,.2009. By the way: Col. Brian T. Boyle is not planning on missing the fisher fest. Last year, when he was still the commander of the US Army Garrison Grafenwoehr and already knew that he was soon going to move to Heidelberg to assume a new position there, he promised: “I will come back to your Fischerfest.“

About a year ago, the Greater Nuernberg Area Traf-fic Association has even published a small book on the hiking trail with detailed route descriptions that complements the flyer published by Amberg-Sulzbach County. The “Erzweg“ hiking trail is dedicated to the region’s century-old mining tradition and industrial history. The book about the 231 kilometer-long trail provides various tips for one-day and multiple-day tours. A small map is included. The tours are suited for families as well as for regular hikers.

The main trail of the Erzweg runs from Pegnitz through Auerbach, Neuhaus, Etzelwang and Högen to Sulzbach-Rosenberg. There are various loops (Ger-man: Schlaufe) such as the Hirschbacher Schlaufe, the Königsteiner Schlaufe, the Neuhauser Schlaufe, or the Plecher Schlaufe that can be added. These loops -- seven of them were marked -- offer the hikers a lot of diversion. Quiet walks through the forest are just as possible as hiking along demanding mountain paths. Naturally, attention is also paid to culture, especially to the region’s more than thousand-year-long mining tradition, as the name “Erzweg“ (Ore Trail) indicates.

In Auerbach, the trail passes along the nature protection area Leonie, the Maffei mining museum with its mines and the so-called Gottvaterberg, a mountain across which the ore was once transported with a cable car. The Leonie nature protection area used to be a goaf area.

While the Auerbach mines were in operation, it was forbidden to enter the area due to the danger of collapse because of the underground tunnels of thee ore mines.

After the Maxhütte Mining Co. declared bankruptcy and the Leonie mine was closed in 1987, the area was left unattended. Several years ago, the area in which many endangered species have found a home, was

bought by the State Bird Conservation Society. Since the summer of 2000, Aurochs cattle graze on the land. Those animals are a back breeding of domestic cattle and resemble the extinct Aurochs. With their natural grazing, the animals ensure that the open meadows remain intact. As a result, numerous species find a habitat there. The Aurochs once live in the Auerbach area, gave the city its name and is heraldic animal. A

small trail goes around the nature protection area and with a little bit of luck hikers can watch the herd which breeds several pups every year.

Bavaria’s most important ore mine is also located along the “Erzweg.“ In the Maffei mines, whose construction started in 1904, 16 million tons of ore were mined by the end of July 1978. The work below the earth’s surface was not easy for the miners since water ingress was a constant danger.

During the mining process, water had to be pumped out constantly which raised the mining costs for the owner of the mines, the Maxhütte mining Co. from Sulzbach. But the high quality of the ore, kept opera-tions profitable. The mining towers of the Maffei mine are the oldest of its kind in Bavaria and can already be seen from the near-by Gottvaterberg mountain. a cable car transported the ore across that mountain and to the Auerbach train station from where it was shipped out.

The Maffei mining museum was opened in May 2000. Equipment and machinery previously used in the mines is shown in the old buildings and the outside area. The museum is open from May through October on Sundays from 3-5 p.m. the tour guides are former miners who still remember their work in the Maffei mines very well. Individual tours outside the regular opening hours may be booked by calling CIV 09643-2433.

However, the “Erzweg“ high-quality hiking trail does not lead past the relicts of the mining tradition in the Auerbach area. More information about the main trail and its loops can be found online at www.erzweg.de. When Louise Wayham, the British spouse of an American service mem-ber, moved to Grafen-woehr together with her husband and her little daughter in February 2008 she had already faced a lot of situations like this and since she

had always wanted to open her own business and thought that Graf would be a great place to realize this dream, she came up with the idea of launching “92655 Concierge”- a great service that could solve any of your problems of this kind.

“My American friends were constantly expressing their frustrations with not being able to find a decent electrician, plumber or painter; someone to mow their lawns when their husbands were away; groom their pets, or get furniture assembled, pictures mounted and appliances installed. It was very often a case of flipping through a business directory and hoping for the best,“ says Wayham.

I’d been there myself, with varied and often frustra-ting results. Plus, very few of the most popular local restaurants offered home delivery, and I knew from experience how difficult it could be to bundle a baby in the back of a car in the snow when your other half is in the field, just to drive into town for takeout from a favorite restaurant.

It occurred to me that on the other hand, German businesses must on some level experience difficulties

in marketing their services to an English-speaking audience if English is not their first language.”

So she established her company to provide one-stop home, wellbeing and lifestyle solutions to the diverse and fast-growing community living in and around Grafen-woehr, in order to “bridge any barriers between German businesses and American clientele, provide a reliable and highly personalized approach to customer service, and a single point of contact through which clients –both newcomers and long-time residents- could take care of their everyday household and lifestyle needs.”

Marie Ereman says that a friend had sent the homepage link of “92655 Concierge” to her and that was how she got to know the delivery service. “The restaurant delivery service is super-quick and super-convenient and it is worth the fee! ” The next thing she is going to try is the day spa service and she is really looking forward to that.

When Nicole Yasin found a flyer of “92655 Conci-erge” she immediately checked out the website. So far she has tried the painting service, the airport shuttle service and the restaurant delivery service and she is absolutely convinced of this company. She recommends it to everybody because it is “live-saving”.

Lauren Martinez found out about “92655 Concierge” on www.grafenwoehr.com and she finds the home spa service and the food delivery service very useful. She thinks “92655 Concierge” is a great idea and is absolutely happy with the service.

Business partners of “92655 Concierge” are all excited about working with Wayham. They are very satisfied! Thomai Kementsetsidou from the Athens Restaurant says that the driver of the delivery service is always on time and very correct. She thinks that the delivery service is a great idea especially for families or military spouses whose partners are in the field and who are alone with their children.

They have a hard time going to a restaurant with the kids or leaving them at home while they pick up the food. So the delivery service is a great solution. Ma-nuela from the Italian Restaurant “Santa Lucia” says the delivery service is a great idea and the cooperation between her and Wayham is perfect since everybody

is always friendly and on time. She adds that many of her regular customers who used to pick up their food are now happy to use the delivery service.

The Deutsche Bahn AG has a great offer for families, or groups of two to five people, age six and up: The Bayern-Ticket. You can use it Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 a. m. the next day. On Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays it can even be used from 0:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the following day. Parents or grandparents (maximum two adults) can take along any number of their own children, or grandchildren age 15 and younger. Whether you purchase it at the ticket machine at the train station, or online at www.bahn.de, the Bayern-Ticket costs 28 Euro. If you buy it at the Reisezentrum at the train station you have to pay 30 Euro.

You want to travel on your own? Then get the Bayern-Ticket-Single for only 20 Euro, if bought at the machine, or online. It costs 22 Euro if you purchase

it at the Reisezentrum and you can travel under the same conditions as with the regular Bayern-Ticket.

If you would like to travel over night, you can buy the Bayern-Ticket-Nacht which you can use from 6:00 p. m. to 6:00 a. m. the next day during the week and on Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays from 6:00 p. m. to 7:00 a. m. the following day.

The Bayern-Ticket is not only good all over Bavaria but it can also be used to go to Kufstein and Salzburg in Austria, Ulm in Baden-Württemberg and Sonne-berg in Thüringen as well as on the routes Hergatz – Kißlegg – Memmimgen, Ansbach – Crailsheim and Hasloch (Main) – Lauda – Würzburg.

With the Bayern-Ticket, you can also go by local street cars and busses. More than 100 destinations, such as museums, amusement parks, zoos, and swimming pools all over Bavaria offer a special discount if you use a Bayern-Ticket to get there. Special prices may also be offered on boat tours and mountain railways.

So, go ahead and explore Bavaria by one of Germany’s most typical means of transportion. It’s relaxing for the whole family and you get to see the landscape far away from the big autobahns. It saves a lot of money and the environment will be grateful for it.
