This Newsletter is designed to provide all students with the answers to questions they may have about what is available to them at The School of Indigenous Studies in Shenton House.

If something isn’t covered here or you still have questions, feel free to approach any of the staff at Shenton House and we will try to get that information out to everyone. Also feel free to approach any of your lecturers or tutors as they also have a wealth of information. One of the most popular ways to find answers is to approach any of the other students who are around as I’m sure they once had similar questions answered at some stage too.

I hope you find this newsletter useful and good luck with your study.

Student Numbers and Student CardsAll students will receive a student number and student card when enrolled. This number and card will be an essential item around campus and your student number will be with you for the rest of your life when studying at UWA.

It will be required to log into the photocopier at Shenton House as all students have a quota of how many pages they can copy. You will need it should you want to borrow books from any of the libraries on campus as well as to use those photocopiers in the libraries. Your card is required whenever dealing with Student Administration such as changing enrolments or courses. It is also needed when sitting exams.

You will find your Student card very useful and should be carried with you at all times. But don’t lose it as it costs about $15 to get a new one.

All students are required to see Candice to be issued with their new passwords to log into the computer system at Shenton House. To use the computers at Shenton House, you will need to log in each time you want to access the web or use email.

Each student has a quota for web usage and printing so it is very important to also log out when you have finished working on them as other students could be using up your quota.

All internet material is scanned so viewing of non-course material and sites is strictly prohibited. Action may be taken and internet use restricted if anyone is caught viewing such sites.

For any computer related problems please see Candice or Brendon in G.01. Alternatively you can call the Helpdesk on extension 7888.

Computer Log In

Students from Shenton House have the privilege of access to the photocopier situated in the computer room. To use the photocopier, students simply enter their student number and press enter.

There is a quota per semester for students. Should your quota run out please see Candice in the front office to reset your quota at the cost of a ream of paper.

If you do have any problems with the photocopier please see Candice or Brendon.

All students have access to the student phone, which is situated in the computer room. Local calls are only to be made on this phone. If students need to make a mobile or long distance call, please see Candice or Brendon.

Many of you will qualify to receive ABSTUDY payments and a “one off” incidentals allowance (if you turn 18 before 1 January 2008). If anyone has any ABSTUDY queries regarding entitlements etc, please feel free to see Gabe in 1.06.

ABSTUDY

Staff and students at Shenton House are lucky enough to have access to full kitchen facilities. Located at the rear of the building, the kitchen has a large fridge (please label your food), microwave, dishwasher, toaster, pie warmer and a kettle amongst other knick-knacks.

Feel free to use any of these items as well as the tea and coffee (for WASAC members), which is readily available although we do ask that you make a donation every now and then by buying a small carton of milk.

If there is anything else you feel is needed in the kitchen, please let staff know.

It is imperative that you wipe all benches down once you have finished zapping your food or making your coffee as ants can be a real problem especially if scraps are left lying around. Who knows what else roams around the benches after hours??? Please be thoughtful of Candice as she is left to clean up the mess people leave in there throughout the day.

Common RoomRoom G.02 is currently the common room for both staff and students. The common room is a place where anyone can come to take time out of their schedule of work or study and relax. It’s a good place to catch up with other students as well as staff at anytime.

Staff will usually start their morning with a cuppa in the common room just after 9am, so if you’re in early feel free to join them for a yarn.

Throughout the year, the common room is also used for various functions, meetings and some students also find it useful to study in, although it is first and foremost a common room to kick back in and therefore it cannot be booked as a quiet tute or study room.

When in the common room during the day it is important to try to keep noise to a minimum as sound travels very easily throughout the building and especially as reception/front office is just across the hallway.

“For all your ABSTUDY queries,

See Gabe.”

“Remember to keep the kitchen

clean at all times.”

“Try not to fall asleep on the comfortable

red couches!”

Shenton House provides students with a number of areas to study in. The area next to Mel Thomas’s room, which is G.12, is the main study area. Also available for study and/or tutoring are carrels 228 and 229 in the Reid Library. (See staff at checkout counter for a key if they are locked).

There are additional rooms around campus for students to book for tutoring including G.03/ G.03A (all times), Old Pharmacology G.01 (sometimes) and the library in Shenton House (occasionally). Please see Candice as these rooms can only be booked for a maximum of 2 hours at a time. If you feel you need tutoring please see Gabe ASAP to arrange a tutor.

There are also plenty of study areas in any of the libraries on campus.

Study Areas, Tutoring and Tute Rooms

There is an Aboriginal student body on campus, which is called the Western Australian Students Aboriginal Corporation. WASAC is responsible for organising many of the activities which students are involved in on and off campus. They organise various social functions such as sundowners, quiz nights and bbq’s.

Members of WASAC have also had the chance to travel around the state, interstate and also overseas for various conferences. Several students went to New Zealand last year. Voting for this year’s committee will be on Tuesday March 11 at 12.30pm in the common room.

To be eligible to enjoy the benefits of WASAC you will need to join up for around $15, which will possibly include a shirt and membership. For further info please see Jessica or Brendon.

WASAC

Students have access to the study room G.12 and the computer room after hours. After 5.00pm weekdays and over the weekends you will need to use your student card to gain entry into Shenton House. You will need to swipe your student card on the security device every time you enter a room. It is important to make sure you keep your student card on you and do not lock your self out. If you do happen to lock your self-out with your belongings inside you can call security for assistance on 6488 3020. Access into Shenton House is recorded when swiping your student card.

For your security and safety it is imperative that all doors to the building are kept locked after hours (after 5pm and on weekends). Please note that the front door of the building will not shut properly unless pulled shut.

If you are not happy with a unit and want to change it, for many courses (but not all) you can change this online.

How? Go to Student Connect web page – http://www.studentconnect.uwa.edu.au/ and with your student ID and password (pheme), then you can select enrolment and from there change units. Remember to go/ proceed right through to print (otherwise it may not be recorded) and you will also get a receipt number which is your proof that it has gone through.

This year (for old students) you do not have to pay to make these changes. Some courses cannot be changed online and you will have to go to Student Administration (Hackett hall) and ask for a Change of enrolment form. You may also need to see a Course Adviser to approve these changes.

Change of Enrolment

“Please keep a copy of your

receipt number as proof of

enrolment.”

“Congratulations to all our recent Graduates.”

Who inspires you and why? I would say that there is no 1 specific person; it’s a combination of qualities/attributes. Individuals, who show innovative, vision and drive, people of strength, commitment and are willing to support others.

Ultimate goal: See answer to holiday destination.5 yrs from now: I should have a plan however I do not. What I can say is that I will still be working

with Aboriginal (and Torres Strait Islander) people in an effort to support our mob however I can. Along the way if that increase's or influences things like social determinants / equity / justice, culturally appropriate health practices/outcomes then I would consider that an added bonus.

Dream Job: Working with Aboriginal (and Torres Strait Islander) mob. Seriously, I am currently attempting to figure out how I can combine dream job and dream holiday.
