Newsletter/Pānui 10 16 June 2017 Kia ora whanau, On Tuesday evening we hosted our first whānau meeting of the year and it was a great night of information sharing, conversation and laughter. The good news is that after many many years of lobbying we have been given some ideas for a Maori name to be used alongside Hoon Hay School. We will be seeking your feedback on the two shortlisted names. We will provide you with a story about why the names are relevant to Hoon Hay and also how the names can be used in the renovation of Hoon Hay School. Exciting stuff! We acknowledged David Perenara O’Connell (Kāmaioha's Dad) who has chaired the hui for 13 years, as this will be his last year at Hoon Hay School. It would be a fitting farewell if he could leave knowing that the school has a Māori name. Our Pirate themed Scholastic Book Fair is going really well. It was a great opportunity to promote reading, offer books at discounted prices to whānau, and have a bit of fun! Here are some photos from the parade. Don't they look gorgeous! Thanks to Karen France and Junghye Ahn for organising the Book Fair and activities that promote reading throughout the school.

This week we have had the company of Constable Ross as he is moving around the rooms reinforcing the Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme. We have asked the children to talk to whānau about the messages so that as a family you can follow up with those important discussions. Last Tuesday Mrs Dent hosted an information evening for parents to share the way we do maths at Hoon Hay School and it was a great night. We had 40 parents attending, along with some teachers from other schools and even a couple of people from the University. I’d like to thank the mums and dads and the two grandmas and two babies that came along. We appreciate your support. Interviews are coming up for our year 4 – 6’s. Information has been e-mailed home, but if you have any queries, please let us know. We see these interviews as a valuable part of learning. We wish our centrals cross country team good luck for the finals at Halswell Quarry next week. Go you good things! Please remember to comment on your child’s class blogs on our website – everyone loves getting feedback, especially the children! Ngā mihi nui, Tōfā soifua
