    INSIDE THE SMBA

    T HE P RESIDENT S

    M ESSAGE D ICK BECKLEY

We are approaching the end of another greatconcert season. Each year we seem to top theprevious year by getting even better bands toperform for us. Either that , or the bands, overallare getting better.

In my opinion, bluegrass is growing in popu-larity , largely because other forms of musicseem to be losing touch with reality, morality ,and just plain good judgment. One only had towatch for a short amount of time, the Grammyawards on Feb 13th, to come to this realization.Theatrics, lack of real vocal and musical talent, and just plain bad taste, seem to be the norm intodays entertainment on TV and mainstreamradio. The real talent was banished from appear-ing on TV and their awards were awarded prior to the prime time TV via webcast.

As country music continues to lean more andmore toward pop and other forms of music, blue-grass seems to be gathering more and morefans who are just tired of listening to the samesound on top 40 stations. The artists and songsall seem to sound alike. Does this sound famil-iar? That was what a lot of people used to sayabout bluegrass. Some still do, but they have notlistened to our music lately, or they wouldchange their mind.

We still have the traditional sounds of Monroe,

Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs and the restof the bands who started this wonderful musicwhich is dear to our hearts. This is, as it shouldbe, and these roots should never be abandonedand should be built on, to further the horizons of the music we love. The music comprised mostlyof Momma, trains, cheating wives, gettingdrunk , and jail has moved on to the morethoughtful and well worded music that we enjoy

at concerts today. Our music still tells a story, but is more varied and polished.

There are scores of top flight bluegrassbands out there today and there are many of them who have a distinctive sound that setsthem apart from anyone else. Not so with to-days country music. We have a chance tospread the word to all who will listen andeven some who have refused in the past tolisten, that bluegrass is and will continue tobe a driving force in music in the future andwill continue to grow and expand its bounda-ries to attract a larger audience.

In addition to the large number of outstand-ing new vocal and instrumental talent on to-days bluegrass scene, we have a growingnumber of first rate song writers turning outwonderful compositions , both in music andwords, so that there is never a shortage of material for the various artists, and we alwayshave a fresh new group of songs to listen toin addition to the usual, old standards. Someof these have even gone on to becomestandards of their own.

Each and every one of you who are readingthis message have in your power, the abilityto spread the word and educate the rest of our population about where our beloved mu-sic came from and how it is growing andspreading its boundaries. We offer muchmore than our stereotype as an old time mu-sic and many who have this image of our mu-sic would , I think, become a fan if they werejust exposed to our varied sounds of today.

Im heartened by the number of young peo-ple who are playing our music today and thetalents that they present. Please consider bringing a youngster to a concert or festivalthis year . Please also consider inviting your friends or neighbors outside our bluegrasscircle. to a concert soon. It will help spreadthe word that we are not strictly an old timemusic, and will also help build our attendanceat our concerts so that we can continue togrow.
