Sailing a boat calls for quick action, a blending of feeling with the wind and water as well as with the very heart and soul of the boat itself. Sailing teaches alertness and courage, and gives in return a joyousness and peace that but few sports afford. George Matthew Adams 1878 - 1962

Due to a complete lack of wind on the 8th October, the Club Championships were postponed to the 15th, when, initially, the wind wasn’t much better. As the day wore on, so the breeze increased. Three races were run with RO James Harcourt making use of the OODs ferry service from Marcus Patten and Mick Alyes to take him to the moored Committee Boat on the Halstock leg of the reservoir. The end of the first race saw the conclusion of closely fought battles; the Aero 7s of Andrew Frost and Chris Jones bested Rob Dyer’s Laser; Howard Frear led the Streakers home and Kelsey Green defended her position on the water from Max Robertson (although

Max took the place from Kelsey on corrected time) in their Laser Radial and Laser 4.7, respectively. Race 2 saw the breeze stiffen causing Richard Frost to capsize on the line just before the start but he quickly recovered and another close battle ensued at the front between the Aero 7s of Frost and Jones and the Laser of Robert Dyer. CLUB RACING RESULTS

On Sunday 5th November the Club held a special open event in memory of Roger Battersby who sadly passed away this

Summer. Roger was a long time member of the Club and a passionate dinghy racer. Roger’s Race was held in the morning together with our annual fund raiser for the RNLI and attracted 25 entries including nine visitors who knew and had raced with Roger. Gusty condition ensured an exciting race for competitors and spectators alike. Simon Hawkes of Wimbleball SC, a previous member of Sutton Bingham claimed first place and Roger’s parents presented him with the new annual ‘Roger’s Race’ trophy.

The RNLI Pursuit Race started in the afternoon with Max Robertson in a Laser 4.7 being first off followed by seventeen faster boats in handicap order. At the finish signal Simon Hawkes was again in the lead and was presented with the RNLI Shield and vouchers to spend at the RNLI pop up shop.

Roger’s Race 1st Simon Hawkes - Phantom 2nd Nick Orman - Phantom 3rd Richard Frost - Solo 4th Howard Frear - Streaker 5th Andy Roxburgh - Streaker

RNLI Shield 1st Simon Hawkes - Phantom 2nd Ian Jay - Finn 3rd Andrew Frost - RS Aero 5 4th Richard Frost - Solo 5th Chris Jones - RS Aero 7 Full results are on the Club’s website. The day raised £208 in voluntary contributions from the racers and spectators, £75 in prize vouchers from the Club were added to the contents of the RNLI collecting box which totalled £125. Next year’s event is planned for the 4th November, put the date in your diary.

It is not often that we hear from Corporate Group members of the Club but recently we were informed that Sherborne School won the National Schools Sailing Championships - Firefly Class at Itchenor Sailing Club. Since 1953, Sherborne has longed to win the coveted Sir Richard Fairey Trophy in this highly competitive class. Ben and Ollie did a sterling job in a field of 25 schools and 45 boats. WHAT DID YOU START GAYNOR?

In the Summer newsletter edition we printed a picture of Gaynor Fraser modelling the OOD arm bands. This has inspired Kelsey Green to find another way of wearing the badge

of office when she was OOD recently. A pony tail is essential!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 8th November, 2017

Members attending the Club’s AGM heard from the Commodore a brief outline of the Club’s activities during the year. The Treasurer announced that the Club’s finances had been audited and it was not necessary to increase fees this year as funds were available for the various projects to improve the Club’s facilities. These projects had been deferred until the lease had been agreed and can now be undertaken - the first project, the Training Centre Shed has already been constructed and is currently being fitted out. Two rule changes were voted on: Addition to Rule 13: Boats and trailers must be kept in the spaces which they have been allocated and for which fees have been paid. Members are responsible for the upkeep of their allocated dinghy parking space(s); for example, by regular removal of weeds and by cutting the grass. On no account should weed killer be applied by members. New Rule 40 - Dogs Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the Club site.

Andy Roxburgh is made an Honorary Life Member for his work on the lease negotiations and Club incorporation at the AGM.

RS TERA OPEN - 9th September

RS TERA OPEN COMPETITORS

Eight local sailors competed to be Sutton Bingham Sailing Club Tera Champion. Wind conditions were predominantly light, but punctuated with frequent bands of rain accompanied by stronger gusts. Former RS Tera sailor, Andrew Frost fresh from victory at the RS Aero Worlds and UK Nationals returned for the day, along with fellow Aero sailor Ben Poë and Max Robertson who has recently transitioned to the Laser Radial. They were challenged by young helms who have enjoyed the Club’s youth sailing courses over the summer and two enthusiastic parents. There was close tactical racing throughout the day with Frost and Robertson battling it out in some tough duels in the early races and Ben Poë in the mix with a 2nd in the first race. Looking back it was race two that decided the Regatta. A momentary loss of control caused Robertson to make contact with a rounding mark allowing Dillon Hodge to get through and clinch 2nd place. Frost won race three which meant Robertson needed a win in race four to get back into contention and although both he and Frost exchanged places several times at the front of the fleet, it was Frost who came out on top, covering Robertson’s every move in the closing stages of the race.

Robertson sat the last race out, tired after the previous night’s dinghy instructors ‘End of Season’ party, which he may have come to regret as Dillon Hodge’s win in the final race secured 2nd overall for him on countback. Overall results 1st Andrew Frost 2nd Dillon Hodge 3rd Max Robertson 4th John Hodge 5th Ben Poë 6th Issy Hodge 7th Eleanor Thomas 8th Kate Thomas

Duty List for 2018 January to April are now on the internet - pick your dates now!

If you are unable to carry out your duty please arrange a swap on Dutyman or contact other members. Telephone numbers are in the Club’s Membership File on the OOD’s Desk. OODs should have the Club ready for sailing by 10.00. Sailing may continue until 30 minutes before sunset but during the summer, OODs can stand down at 6pm after handing over the duty to whoever is still sailing. Galley people should bring milk and cakes (take expenses from money taken) and be ready to serve by 11.30 and, if possible, stay until completion of the last race. Contact Julia Green at the Club or ’phone: 07917 420840 for a briefing before your first Galley Duty. Race Officers: First race 11.30, afternoon races 13.30 and 15.00 (pm races back-to-back in winter). The Race Officer Roster is organised by Rob Jamieson.

It’s been a record year: 182 youngsters and 34 adults have attended courses in 2017 and we’re already getting enquiries for 2018. Over the winter we’ll be looking at next year’s plans, reviewing some of our procedures and looking at ways we can develop our already brilliant team of instructors. As Principal, I have a joint responsibility to the RYA and to the Club Committee for the way the training is delivered and the support of the Committee underpins everything we’ve been able to achieve this year. 2018 will be my third year as Principal and it is my intention to hand over to someone else at the next AGM – so . . . now’s your chance! You don’t have to have any RYA qualifications as Principal because we operate through our Chief Instructors for dinghy sailing and powerboat courses. It’s an interesting and rewarding job so please let me know if you’re interested and I can talk you through what I do. Once people have learned how to sail, we want them to practice and develop their skills – and to become full members of the Club. The ‘Get Afloat Days’, which were a joint initiative by the Club and the Training Centre are designed for just this purpose and they have been a success. We will schedule them again

next year but the Club needs someone to coordinate them to make the best use of people’s time, both as participants and ‘friendly, experienced’ helpers. Could you do this? I was awarded the Clubman of the Year Trophy at the annual Prizegiving and Social event which I accepted on behalf of all the people who work so hard to make the Training Centre a success and to give the adults and youngsters so much fun on the water. So finally, this is another opportunity to thank all those who contribute to the success of the Club’s Training Centre on and off the water, on stage and in the wings. We couldn’t do it without you. CLANGER TROPHY NOMINATION?

A visitor on RNLI Day with a fixed rudder had the embarrassment of losing this vital piece of equipment after launching for a race. As he is not a Club member, we will be looking for another ‘winner’ during the year.

Under the box cover Hugh Tetlow has mounted an electric winch to assist in the

recovery of heavy two person boats up the ramp at the eastern slip (by the black plastic pontoon).

A 12volt battery will be stowed in the

Secure Store to power the winch and the ‘In/Out’ control is

plugged into the unit. To unwind the cable move the

chrome lever on the winch gearbox

clockwise and pull out sufficient cable to reach the boat..

Attach the hook to a suitable part of the launching trolley and at the winch, turn the chrome handle anti-clockwise to engage the

winch. Note the trolley must have a jockey wheel

For safety, a crew member should be

controlling the trolley as the boat is winched up the ramp in case of breakage or the boat going off course.

After use, please disconnect the battery and return to the Secure Store and connect the trickle charger. At the winch wind the cables neatly

around the winch and replace the cover and ‘hold down’ rock to keep the cover in place.

Nigel Leveridge with a song about females taking over and a humorous monologue from the master of double entendre, Merv Clark, who explained what it was like to be an angel. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday 27th October, 2018. If you would like to hold the event in a venue of your choice please contact Phil Bailey. Organise the Annual Prizegiving? I would help you get started so if you are interested, please contact me.
