James Thomas Principal

Dear Parents, Last week I was sitting with a group of principals, listening to prominent New Zealand lawyer Mai Chen, speak about success. It was an insightful and challenging address; and much of what she said had wide application. A few of her thoughts follow: "It is not the strongest, or smartest, who will survive.... but the one’s

most responsive to change". Darwin Persistence is everything. The world is full of unsuccessful talent;

people with good ideas who have achieved little or nothing; people of words not deeds. People who keep trying when the going gets tough, are the people who will succeed.

Learn to control how you see things. The real voyage of discovery does not consist of new landscapes, but new eyes.

When considering those who will be mediocre and not achieve to their potential with those who will be ‘world class’, Mai made the following comparisons:

Middle Class ‘World Class’

We were delighted to see in the NZ Herald last week, that our NCEA results are very positive when compared to other schools. We have high expectations and look forward to continued fine results. If you walk around our school, you will see a lot of positive teaching and learning going on. Add to this the contribution of our strong support systems; plus the support for learning that you give from home – and we have a powerful recipe for success.

Ko te tamaiti te uptake o te kaupapa The Child – the heart of the matter

Sincerely

PS. All the best for a special time over

the Easter break.

Digital Citizenship Poster Contest

Back in February, we ran a contest in which learners were asked to create

posters showing what a good “Digital Citizen” looks like.

We had some great entries from the Year 7 and Year 8 learners.

The winner of the contest was Alexandria Crockett (poster over page).

Tayla McConchie and Cerri Unsworth were the runners up.

First prize was a double pass to the movies, runners up received single

passes. Thanks to Hoyts Whangaparaoa, for donating prizes.

Sports Talk WGP Year 7 - 8 Sports

Year 7 & 8 Tag Zone Day Congratulations to the following boys who competed in the zone day at Sunnynook Park and won the North Harbour Schools Competition. Good luck at the Auckland Schools Competition! Dallas White, Taine Te Kiri Ryan, Notana Snowden, Tipene Snowden, Tane Regan-Raniera, Korban Kirk, Seamus Kelly, Daniel Kobe, Adam Windleburn, Jaden Whear, Elijah Marsters. We took a group of Year 7 and 8 boys to the Tag Zone day and played 5 games in total. The first versus Wairau school, we won by a whopping 26-1. This was followed by another win 19-0 against Belmont, then again against Mahurangi 16-0. Last of all Glenfield, which we won 7-1 and as we were unbeaten, this put us into the finals. We played Birkenhead who were 3-0 at half time and we came back with a full time score of 3-3. As you can’t finish on a draw, we went to “immediate drop off” and were only allowed 5 players on the field instead of 8. The first team to score, wins. It could have been anyone’s game and we managed to prevent them from scoring. In the end, patience paid off as we scored the winning try 4-3. We are so proud of the boys as they played their hearts out and never gave up. We have now made it into the Auckland Championships on 15 April. Tania Regan, Manager

Last weekend, Whangaparaoa 1st XV ventured down to Waihi for a preseason Match-Up with Waihi College. We stayed at the Top Ten Holiday Park, right opposite Waihi beach. This made for excellent training grounds and strong team building. We were lucky enough to have ex All Black Assistant Coach and Selector Ross Cooper at a training session, offering technique and skill advice. We also managed to do a little sight-seeing around Waihi, including the Martha Gold Mine. It was great to have such a large amount of support from parents and the team is looking forward to having a great season. On Saturday, the 1st XV played Waihi College's 1st XV. Although the game didn't go the way we had planned, it still gave some positive outcomes. It showed that we had some heart during the middle of the game, our set piece was solid and it was great to see all the debut players stand up against a skilled opposition. Waihi showed us the importance of playing for each other. "You are a family now" is what their coaching staff told us after the game and we need to start really playing for every one that is involved in the team. That will happen as soon as our mind set changes. However, it was a learning curve and we will come out for the better because of this. We left Waihi Beach on Sunday morning and headed back to Whangaparaoa after an intense early morning beach training run. Tom Stroud & Chris Everitt

2014 Soap Box Derby

Balin Mitchell

Whangaparaoa College recently entered two trolleys in the locally organised Rotary Soap Box Derby which was held on Stanmore Bay Road. Kids came to my garage, ripped the trolleys apart, and re-assembled them. Some had never held a spanner before but by the end had formed a great little team. They called themselves ‘The White Herons’. Both cars were painted white, one by our sponsors and the other by using spray cans in my garage! Practices went well with everyone making sure that safety was paramount before each trolley went down the hill. This year we even had a practice start ramp. (Thanks to Dave!) Race day came. Our cars were looking fast!! Everyone from the college stood up and cheered the team on in each race. Four of our eight drivers made it through to the final eight. It was exciting for the four drivers who made it, disappointing for the other four. We made it to every race in the final with the following results:- Sam Creevey – 6

th place

Grace Kendrick – 5th

place Balin Mitchell – 2

nd place

The National Finals took place the next day. The pit crew and all drivers turned up to support the finalists. Unfortunately we missed getting into the finals by 100

th of a

second and only one Hibiscus Coast Team made it through. A big thank you to all parents and local residents who helped in the preparation; to the fantastic pit crew; to our sponsors New World and Simon Lucas Mitsubishi Plus and a huge thank you to the local Rotary Club for putting so much effort into running this event for the children of the coast and raising funds for voluntary groups. Most of all, congratulations to the team, some pretty determined kids who loved the experience. I am sure we will see some of them back next year! Ben Creevey
