Over a million students across the naon in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 completed the tesng this week. NAPLAN doesn’t replace regular in-class assessment, nor does it assess every aspect of what is taught at school. It does, however, provide one set of important data about how students are performing in literacy and numeracy, relave to their peers across the country. This allows the opportunity to celebrate student success and idenfy areas in which further support may be required. Parents of children who sat the NAPLAN tests this week will receive an individual report later in the year. The Magic Words Parents of younger students may have heard the term ‘Magic Words’ to describe sight words being learnt in class. The Magic Words are the most common words used when reading English. The first 12 words (or Golden Words) make up on quarter of words most commonly read. The Magic 100 Words make up 50% of the words in reading; the Magic 200 Words, 65% and the Magic 300 Words, 70%. Learning the Magic Words rapidly improves reading, increases fluency and develops comprehension. P and C Day 24 May Next Thursday 24 May is the inaugural P and C Day. On behalf of our staff and students, I’d like to thank the P and C for the outstanding work they do to support educaon at Toowoomba East State School. P and C members are invited to a@end a Thank You morning tea in the staffroom on Wednesday 30 May. If you would like to a@end, please nofy Miss Smith for catering purposes.

Toowoomba East State School Chaplaincy Treasurer’s Report Thank you to all involved with this year’s Mother’s Day stall. $4,476.85 was raised for Chaplaincy at our school. We hope that all involved enjoyed the experience. A special thank you goes out to Renee Day who coordinated the Mother’s Day stall for her second year. Her mother also was a tremendous help. The many parent volunteers ensured the stall was fun for the children and ran smoothly. Thank you very much. Thank you to all students and your families for supporng our fundraiser. Kind regards Carolyn Cranch TESS Chaplaincy Treasurer

Biggest Morning Tea

On Thursday 24 May our school will parcipate in the Biggest Morning Tea. Students are asked to bring a plate of food to share with their class for morning tea. We are asking for a gold coin donaon that will go directly to the Cancer Council. This is a great opportunity in our school to support a very worthy cause through gathering together, sharing morning tea and giving to others in need.

Prep A, B, C, D and E will not be parcipang in this event on 24 May. They will be a@ending the Under 8’s Day at TACAPS. Prep classes will have their Biggest Morning Tea and Grandparent’s Morning together on Friday 1 June.

Chris Collin Visit (pictured above)

Chris Collin “ The Funky Chicken Man” and Brian Falkner two well known authors visit Toowoomba East State School

On Friday 27 April 2018 we had award winning author Chris Collin visit our library. He entertained the students from Prep to Year 2 for over an hour. He put on three brilliant shows which were packed with enthusiasm, excitement and laughter. The behaviour of the children throughout the day was outstanding. The students were singing and dancing to the songs from the book “The Funky Chicken.” Chris told the children how he came up with the idea for the book “ A Bug called Doug” aRer strolling through a North Queensland rainforest and spoTng a cockroach crawling along the forest floor. Chris bought out a number of puppets for the children to meet. A number of children were selected from the audience to dress up as characters from the books . They became the star performers and led the rest of the audience in a song or dance. He finished off every session with each student drawing a character from one of his books. It was an absolute pleasure to have Chris and Nadia visit our library and we hope they will be able to revisit our school in the near future. Brian Falkner also visited the school on Monday 23 April 2018. Brian spoke to the students from Year 3 to Year 6. He told them about how his real life experiences had provided him with the material to write seventeen books. He was a wonderful inspiraon to the students and it was a pleasure to have him come and work with our students. Brian Falkner Visit (pictured below)
