Newsletter, Wednesday 24th July, Term 3
Larrakeyah Primary School is a member of the
Darwin City Schools and in partnership with
Darwin Middle School, Darwin High School,
Northern Territory Open Education Centre,
Ludmilla Primary School, Stuart Park Primary
School and Parap Primary School.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
A warm welcome to the start of Semester Two. It has been great to see students
returning enthusiastically to school after the break. Welcome to Natalie Jankovic who is
teaching Year 4. At the end of last term we said farewell to David Ashton who returned
to Vietnam to be with his family.
On Monday we had a very productive staff development day. The focus for staff was on
Mathematics, Writing (Brightpath trial) and the use of Technology for students and staff.
There has been a lot of activity during the school break with painting of buildings and
classrooms as well as improvements to some classrooms. You also should have noticed
the bright green kerb at the front of the school which highlights our Drop Off Zone. The
Drop Off Zone is not for parked cars – you need to remain in your vehicle and keep
moving up to keep the traffic flowing. The Drop-Off-Zone is designed as a quick drop-off
and pick-up area to keep traffic flowing to avoid congestion. If you have to get out of
the car to escort your children into the school, preschool, come to the front office or
collect your child from school, please find a carpark. This often means parking on the
road.
During the school break I attended national accreditation training in ACER School
Reviews. I was fortunate to be selected along with 9 other Darwin Principals/DoE staff to
be trained as a school reviewer. This important work relates directly to school
improvement using a national framework. All schools in the NT have a school review as
part of a 4 year cycle.
I trust Semester Two will be both happy and successful. The partnership between home
and school is always important. If you have any concerns or issues regarding your child,
we encourage you to contact the class teacher in the first instance. Rick Collister
(Assistant Principal Early Childhood), Tash Guse (Assistant Principal Middle/Upper), Kiri
Marschall (Senior Teacher Early Childhood), Brad King (Senior Teacher Middle Primary),
Carmel Spruhan (Senior Teacher Upper Primary) and myself are also available.
Regards,
Fathma Mauger
Principal

To Parents/Carers
On 8th August 2018, the NT Health Minister announced that a catch up program for
Men ACWY vaccine will now be available for all children aged 2-19 years in urban
Darwin to protect and reduce carriage and transmission of Men ACWY in the
NT. Statistics have shown a poor uptake of the MEN ACWY vaccine for children aged
between 5-15yrs. Please note this is a catch up program for children who have NOT
previously received this vaccine.
This program is implemented due to recent outbreaks of Men W circulating
Australia. For more information/statistics please visit www.health.nt.gov.au
The immunisation Nurses at the Palmerston GP Superclinic are available to
immunise any child who is yet to receive the Men ACWY immunisation. Bulk billed
15 minute consults will be available Monday to Sunday 8-4pm. To make a
booking or to make an enquiry please call Penny or Liz K at the Palmerston GP
Superclinic on 89198919.
Most Children/Adolescents will require a single dose if vaccinated after 12 months of
age.
The vaccines are very safe and incur the common vaccine side effects such as
injection site pain, redness and fever – other side effects can be discussed with
vaccination nurse at time of appointment.
Anyone outside the 1-19 year age bracket who would like to be immunised will need
to see their GP and get a private script for Men ACWY. Meningococcal B is not being
funded by NT government or the National immunisation scheme and people wishing
to be vaccinated for this should also see their local GP for a private script.
Immunisation saves lives. It protects you, your family and your community. And it
also helps protect future generations by eradicating diseases.
