A FEW WORDS ABOUT BEING A BRESCIA ALUMNAE

I had the privilege of being invited to be the guest speaker at this year’s Valedictory dinner for the Matric Class of 2015. For those of you who may not remember, this is a special mass and dinner for the Matrics (and their parents) that is held just before they go on study leave for their final exams and is an occasion to pay tribute to them and their families as they reach the pinnacle of their school career.

The first noticeable thing about returning to Brescia was how much it has changed in its appearance. I matriculated in 2003 and can hardly recognise it! So, in just over 10 years, it has transformed into a :• connected (yes, you can log onto

the wifi from anywhere on the school property),

• modern (with state of the art plasmas for break notices…can you believe it),

• global (in the Resource Centre there is a stunning wall paper backdrop of the actual town of Brescia in Italy) learning facility,

and yet it still resembles the Brescia we all know and love (with the picturesque rose gardens filling the air with

fragrance, now with the new addition of the St Angela rose).

The second thing I noticed was the warm welcome I got from the staff who taught me while at Brescia, and even from those who didn’t, as we could connect instantly around topics such as what kind of trendy and most definitely Brescia outlawed hair-dos the school girls are wearing these days.

It also struck me, how polite all the girls were and how much they respected the staff, and how the interaction between them still resembles that of a family, which I immediately missed.

The third thing that struck me was how well spoken the Matrics were. As I was about to give my speech, I was introduced by one of the Deputy Head Girls and I was taken aback by my sudden attack of nerves to be speaking in front of this crowd… this crowd of such calibre.

They spoke gracefully, with poise and confidence and a whole lot of personality, which was special to

witness as an ex-Brescia girl.

All of this, ultimately made me realise how truly special this Brescia family of ours is and how we still belong to this incredibly talented, loving and esteemed group of ladies. And with our jubilee year just around the corner, I would like to personally invite you to return to Brescia and reminisce about your days as a Brescia girl.

The Alumnae brunch on 30 January 2016 provides the perfect opportunity to do just this, where you can catch up with other ladies from your year, walk around the school and see the world-class facilities for yourself, meet some of the new (and old ) staff members that continue to impart their wisdom to us young ladies, and be honoured to feel part of this Brescia family once again as we toast to 50 years of Brescia ladies walking these corridors.

A few words of thanks to you allI would like to also make special mention of the outgoing Chair of the Board of Governors (Richard Firth), for the outstanding work he has done in

FOREWARDSKYE LIVINGSTONE-BLEVINS (Class of 2003)ACTING HEAD OF THE BRESCIA HOUSE SCHOOL ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

this huge role over the last 3 years. Your guidance, commitment and passion for this school will be sorely missed!

I would also like to thank Ann Owgan, Benedikte Nott and especially Heather Auchterlonie for their efforts in building this Alumnae Association and for making it a priority to stay connected and recognise the achievements of their alumnae.

A big thank you to the Alumnae committee as well for their continuous and steady support in steering and shaping this young alumnae society. Unlike boys’ alumni organisations, girls are different… and often herding girls is like herding cats, if not harder, and it is due to your sheer love for Brescia and dedication to keeping us all connected that keeps it going.

Again, thank you to my fellow classmates Jane (Whysall) Hynes, Angela Kayton (Matric 2003) and Angela Whysall (Matric 2010) for pulling this beautiful magazine together for us. I am sure that many alumnae members get as much enjoyment as I do in paging through this…Thank you.

To you, reading this note and the newsletter, thank you for continuing to stay connected to our Brescia family and I really hope to see you and connect with you at the Alumnae brunch early in 2016. As you all go off for a break in December and plan for the new year ahead, I would like to share the quote I ended off my Valedictory speech to the Matrics with as they too plan their next chapter into the new year…

Be strong, be brave, be you and remember “Well behaved women seldom make history.” ` Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

This winter we had two changes to the uniform. The green hat disappeared (no-one was able to supply us with these hats) and a tracksuit was added. The girls now wear their white bashers to school all year. On days when the predicted maximum temperature was 18o or lower, the girls are allowed to wear tracksuits to school instead of their dresses. The new tracksuits are very smart and will also be used for sport throughout the year.

This year the Matrics chose a college-type jersey as their Matric sweatshirt. In the photo you can see the 3 variations of the winter uniform – the dress, the old track-suit and the new tracksuit.

ALUMNAE SPORT

On Thursday 18th June, the annual sport fixtures between the Matrics and the alumnae-staff teams took place. We started with a very energetic, and closely contested, game of netball. The “oldies” managed to hold their own, despite not having played together as a team ever before. The hockey was also a hard-fought game, with the alumnae-staff emerging victorious 1-0. This year we also had 2 sets of sisters playing against each other. We’re looking forward to 2016, when they can all play for the same side. After the sport, we moved to the atrium for a cocktail party hosted by the school to show off the new facilities to the alumnae, and past and present members of the PTA and the Board of Governors.

UNIFORM

House Plays took place during Cultural Day on 26th June. All three houses put on very good productions and the adjudicator had a hard time choosing the main prize winners. In the end, Merici was awarded both Best Production and Best Actress and Brescia got Best Director. Laurus was awarded a certificate for Best Creative Director. For the first time ever, we combined all three winter inter-house events and held them during school in the last week of term two. We started with netball, followed by hockey and then soccer.

The results were as follows: Brescia Laurus MericiNetball 1st 2nd 3rd Hockey 2nd 1st 3rd Soccer 3rd 1st 2nd

The final big inter-house event was athletics, held over 2 days – the field events on 21st September and the track event during school on 23rd September. It was a phenomenal year, with eight records being broken – 2 by Merici, 3 by Laurus and 3 by Brescia.

Final results:Merici 3rd Brescia 2nd Laurus 1st

This only left inter-house chess to finish off the year for the House committee. The results were as follows:1st Laurus2nd Brescia3rd Merici As a result of all of this hard work, at Prize Giving Laurus was awarded both the Brescia House Study Cup (for the highest academic average) and the Best House Trophy (for the highest total score for all inter-house events).

INTER-HIGH ATHLETICSThe athletics season is always short and intense. This year it was decided that all four of the fixtures would take place at the stadium in Germiston, so that the girls could get used to running on a proper track. The Inter-high meeting took place on Wednesday 21st October and was a very closely contested event.

The record set in 2013 by Christin Thomas (Matric 2013) still stands, as does one of the two set by Tayla Dominy (Matric 2014).

The Matrics thoroughly enjoyed their last week of school. On Sunday 4th October, they slept over at school, supervised by 2 very brave teachers. They spent the night decorating many of the classrooms – the bottom floor all became days like Halloween, Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day and Spring Day and they filled one of the stairwells with balloons. They also dressed up to various themes, like Pyjama Day and Beach Day.

On Friday 9th October, the 40 Matrics arrived at school in 2 minibus taxis and then enjoyed the annual foam fight with the rest of the high school. After tea with the staff and the formal assembly, the school wished them farewell with a more informal gathering in the atrium.

SPAR LADIES RACE On Sunday 11th October, Brescia once again participated in the annual Spar ladies race. They estimate that there were 14 500 participants. We were responsible for about 100 of these entries (about 75 girls and another 25 adults). We came 3rd in terms of schools with the most finishers. As a result, we won a laptop from Mustek and a hamper from Pritt.

We now have 21 alumnae with daughters at Brescia and one with a granddaughter.

AN INITIATIVE OF THE NELSON MANDELA CHILDREN’S FUND

Dear Ms Norman and Brescia House School pupils,

On behalf of our Chairperson, Mrs Graça Machel and the trustees of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, I hereby wish to acknowledge, with deep gratitude, your donation of R13 496.75 contributed through monthly bake sales throughout 2015 towards the For Kids By Kids campaign.

We are honoured and deeply appreciative of the contribution you continue to make towards the building of the hospital.

As we work together to ensure Mr Mandela’s vision to make specialist healthcare available to all children of Southern Africa a reality -irrespective of their ability to pay.

We are ever mindful of Madiba’s words at the site dedication for this, the fourth paediatric facility in Africa:

“A specialised, dedicated children’s hospital will be a credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront. Nothing less would be enough”

Sincerely

SIBONGILE MKHABELA CEO, NELSON MANDELA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TRUST

This year two of the Brescia staff completed the Comrades – Brenda Wesi, one of our Grade R assistants, and Megan (Kinsley) Winderley, one of our Grade 2 teachers and a member of the Matric class of 2002. Congratulations to both of them.

REUNIONS

CLASS OF 1985

On Saturday 11th July, the class of 1985 celebrated 30 years since they were in Matric. Gina (Blake) Forssman, deputy head girl, did a wonderful job of tracking down many of the original 25 girls in their year. After champagne in the staffroom, they went for a tour around the school (for many of them, the first time they’d been back), followed by lunch in the boardroom for the eight ladies who were able to get back to Brescia.

L – R: Lara Kay, Alison Prescott, Linda Hind, Gina Blake, Tracey Kelly, Anya Gericke, Sandra Otto, Shirley Van Heerden.

CLASS OF 1980

On Saturday 19th September, many of the class of 1980 got together for a reunion lunch at Casalinga

CLASS OF 2005

On Saturday 7th November, 20 members of the original 48 of the class of 2005 returned to Brescia for a reunion. They met in the staffroom for champagne, followed by a walk around the school. Its amazing how much noise 20 ladies can make catching up on each other’s news and discussing all the changes to the school. They then went to “Salsa” for lunch.

JUBILEE

In 2016, Brescia House School will be 50 years old. Whilst this may still seem young, it is extraordinary when we think back to 26 January 1966, when the school opened its doors to just over 100 pupils.

In recognition of the Ursuline Sisters, we are planning a number of activities and festivities that will allow us time to reflect, pause and celebrate our wonderful school. Our pupils, staff and parents (both present and past), are invited to join us in celebrating our very special Jubilee year.

There is still time to order your own rosebush – especially cultivated for our jubilee. Alumnae will be able to collect their roses at the brunch

UPDATE FROM KARIN AMOILS (NEE MEYER) – MATRIC 1978I was one of the first Grade 0s at Brescia to go through all of my schooling (up to Matric) at the school. I started in grade 0 in 1966. The school was very small and I remember going to school on the bus with the “big girls”. My first teacher was Mrs Saunders, an elderly lady with purple-rinsed hair.

In those days the Head Mistress and most of the teachers were nuns who wore very heavy habits. By the time I reached High School, though, there were more lay teachers and the nuns wore lighter clothing. My favourite nun was Mother Gemma Lawler – someone who we could talk to and who inspired us.

I matriculated in 1978 and went on to study a BSc at Wits majoring in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Advanced Biology. This I completed in 1982. My first job was at SA Breweries in their Research and Development Department. I was more interested in Medicine, though, and after 3 years got a position at WITS Department of Medicine. After working in the Oncology Research Lab for a few years I got my Masters in Medicine (with distinction) in 1995 and eventually a PhD in 2011. I am also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.

I married Johnny Amoils in 1992, had a daughter, Shannon, in 2003 and soon thereafter we moved to Plettenberg Bay. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 (2 weeks after being notified that my PhD had been accepted – in Breast Cancer, no less.). Although I now no longer work in the field I started a small support group for Cancer Warriors and Survivors (I do not like the words “Victims” or “Sufferers”). I also run a Moms and Toddlers group at a school in Plett, which I love.

Life seems to have come full circle for me here in Plett as many ex-Brescia girls have come to live here or in this area.

LIZZY JANG - MATRIC 2005Lizzy was not able to be at her class’ reunion, but sent this update. Lizzy came to Brescia from Korea in Grade 9 (2002) and matriculated in 2005. She made many lifelong friends in her time here, and her charm is evident in the (unedited) message below; those who know her will hear her voice in the words: “I got married in 2013 to a guy who is like ‘Winnie the Pooh’. I met him at the university and I think it was like fate to meet him. He was my SA-Korean friend’s best friend! I only knew that after meeting him few months later.

I do work with SA and few oversea countries. I import Rooibos from Cape Town and export Korean rice snacks. My husband works at Korean car company called ‘Hyundai’.

I have two little dogs, name Rooi (boy-6yrs) and Honey (girl-6mths) .I didn’t like animals much but after I adopted Rooi (we adopted him when we started going out), I became a ‘dog-lover’ and do some voluntaries too.

I visited SA in mid of 2013. I met SJ, Caits, my godmother Mrs Smith and their family. We visited Cape Town for the Rooibos business and I showed him Sandton, Fourways Mall, Monte, Fourways (where I stayed) and Brescia! Luckily I met Mrs Jacobs, Mrs Duncan and Ms Mitchell. There were so many changes at school. But it was really great time to show my husband I explained him where we had mass and all the galas, where I learnt piano and religious. He really enjoyed the tour Mrs Jacobs took us on.

For little Lizzy, I hope to have soon. I am undergoing medical treatment now. I had big car accidents last year and this year. Send my loves and that I miss all a lot!”

KARYN TOMLINSON NEE WRIGLEY - MATRIC 2005Karyn (Tomlinson) Wrigley was also not able to be at the 2005 reunion as she is still living in Dubai, where she and her family have been for 6 years now.

KATE WARDROPE - MATRIC 2002Kate Wardrope (Matric 2002) and her Australian husband and sons popped in to Brescia during their recent visit to South Africa.

ANELE NTULI – MATRIC 2011When I left school in 2011, I was already working as the face of Loin Cloth & Ashes (a  South African fashion brand) and started studying at the University of Pretoria majoring in Biochemistry and Genetics. I got my degree while modelling part time and decided to take most of this year to model full time. I’m going back to school next year to do my honours in Biochemistry. I have done a lot of editorial work with magazines such as True Love Magazine, Essays of Africa Magazine and Grazia. I have been doing a lot of ramp work from AFRICA FASHION INTERNATIONAL- Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and South Africa Fashion Week as well as catalogue work with brands such as PQ clothing, lookbooks with various designers such as: Loin Cloth and Ashes, Mick Owen, Erre Fashion and more.
