Mass & Reconciliation

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Community,

Schools are busy places! No doubt we have all heard that before. At times our twenty first century lives create the feeling (please excuse me showing my age here!) that we are existing in a pinball machine, bouncing from one event to the next in rapid succession. One of the great joys of belonging to a Marist family like ours is that there are times when we have the opportunity to sit and reflect on what’s really important. I’d like to share with you the Prayers of Reflection/commitment that the staff made at our Mass on January 25. It provides great direction to all!

• At the heart of Marist spirituality coming from Marcellin and the first Brothers is Humility. It expresses itself in simplicity of behaviour, most especially in our way of relating to God and to others. We strive to be persons of integrity – truthful, open-hearted and transparent in our relationships.

• Jesus shows us how deeply God is touched by the needs and pain of people, especially the “little ones” of life. As our lives become more centered in our relationship with God, we too are filled with God’s compassion and are drawn into service of those in need, especially among young people.

• Our spirituality is communal, best expressed and lived when we are gathered as family and community. We develop meaningful relationships and assure our consistent presence within our communities and families. Thus the experience of loving and being loved become part of our life in the ordinary moments of our day.

• Our compassionate response to the needs of the world wells up from our spirituality. Spirituality draws us into mission and, in living that mission finds itself nourished and rekindled. It gives meaning to our human experiences and allows us to read life with the eyes and heart of God and to understand it as God’s project.

• Mary is surprised by the forceful entry of God into her life. She is afraid. Then she comes to be at peace because of her intuition of the presence and love of God for her. Without having all the answers to her questioning, she trusts and commits herself to a God who inspires trust.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin,

Peter McLoughlinHeadmaster

CONGRATULATIONS

• To Mr Tom Giles, Recreation Officer in the Boarding School who has announced his engagement to Kate on February 21, 2010.

• Congratulations and sincere thanks to Mr Peter McWhirter, Mr Tony Byrne, Mrs Kay Wells and Mrs Leigh Perkins who organized the Champagnat Trust Sports Lunch on Friday 26 February. It was a magnificent day which provided great entertainment to all who attended. My thanks also to Catherine Wasserman and the string quintet who entertained guests prior to the lunch; to Peter Spensley, Justin Rahardjo and the technical crew; Mr Wayne Hansen, Mrs Chris Raleigh, Miss Sarah McLoughlin and Ms Margaret Wells who efficiently looked after the raffle and auction collections and pre-lunch preparations and to the Services staff who transported all the memorabilia items to the Sofitel Hotel.

CANONISATION

ANOTHER STEP CLOSER FOR MARY

On Friday 19 February Pope Benedict announced that Mary MacKillop, great Australian Catholic educator, will formally be made a Saint on 17 October at a ceremony in Rome. She will be our first official Australian Saint. We rejoice with all Australians of goodwill, at this recognition of the love of God made visible in the life of Mary. She was a woman of great faith and vision for the education of poor and rural children through her founding of the Sisters of St Joseph. No doubt we will hear more of the celebrations that will take place to mark Mary’s canonization as the year progresses.

STAFF LEAVE

Last Friday we farewelled Ms Ofelia Zuniga who has taken leave from the College for the remainder of 2010. We wish Ms Zuniga every happiness for her leave and last Monday welcomed Mr Phillip Holding to teach Ms Zuniga’s classes until the end of this term.

Welcome also to Mrs Caroline Smith who has joined the staff as Campus Minister.

• Please pray for the repose of the soul of the grandmother of Edric Joe 10H who passed away on February 11, 2010.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM

On Monday 1 March 2010, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) published draft K-10 Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and History for a period of national consultation. The consultation period closes on 23 May 2010.

This is a significant event in Australian education.

The draft curriculum and all the resources required to provide feedback are published at: www.australiancurriculum.edu.au. At this address, you will find the draft curriculum on which you can comment, a survey which you can complete and other resources such as videos, information sheets and frequently asked questions.

On visiting the website, you will need to register your details in a simple process that will provide you with an ongoing login and password and ensures you the opportunity to save and return to your feedback over time and as often as you wish.

This is a unique opportunity for you to express your views and comment on the draft curriculum materials. Take the opportunity over the next few months to contribute to making this the best possible curriculum for all teachers and students in Australia.

The draft curriculum in the same four learning areas, for the senior secondary years, will be published online and available for public consultation between April and June 2010. More details on consultation on the senior years’ curriculum will be provided in March.

ACARA will refine the draft curriculum in response to the feedback from both the K-10 and senior years’ national consultation, and will publish a final version of the K-12 Australian Curriculum in English, mathematics, science and history in September 2010.

MATHS ONLINE

The Mathematics Faculty of Marist College Ashgrove would like to announce a fabulous new initiative just introduced into our mathematics teaching programs. We have registered all of our students to use the fabulous teaching/learning resource at www.mathsonline.com.au. You may have seen the recent TV advertisements by their sponsors McDonalds Australia, and it is through this sponsorship that the program, which previously cost its many thousands of satisfied clients $40 per month for access, is now FREE to our students.

Some of the features that this program has are as follows;

• Full lessons for each concept with a voice over and numerous examples of varying difficulty. Every lesson has a pause and rewind facility to help students grasp concepts at their own pace.

• Every lesson has an accompanying printable summary and worksheet to consolidate the concept, with full worked solutions provided also.

• A student’s ongoing use and progress in the program is stored for theirs and their teacher’s perusal at any time.

• The program can be accessed from any internet ready site, not just at school.

• The entire Year 7 to 12 program is available to every student, not just their particular year group or course.

• Parents may register to get weekly updates on their child’s program use and progress, by clicking on the ‘Parents area’ tab within their child’s account.

• Many more features will also be made available on-line over coming months.

Given that the program covers most of the concepts that we teach, and as good as this resource is, the school wishes to make it clear that it was never intended by its creators to replace the wonderful work that our mathematics teaching staff already do. This program is best used as a support/supplement to the classroom teaching/learning experience. All students can ask their teacher for their unique logins and passwords over the next few days and are encouraged to use this resource as directed by their own teacher.

HOME STUDY BOOK

All students in Years 8 – 10 should have received an information sheet on “How to Study Mathematics – Home Study Book”. They are encouraged to ask their teacher for help if they have any issues should they choose to use this method for studying.

MOVIE NIGHT NOW SHOWING at MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE – DRANEY THEATRE

12TH March 2010 at 7.PM

From the Directors of 'Surfing 50 States', comes 'Somewhere Near Tapachula'Perth Film Festival award winner… received a standing ovation!

A truly inspiring story of love, life and hope. Set in Tapachula, Mexico, this documentary looks at the horrific childhoods of 45 kids, their new life at Mission Mexico, and the exciting future of following their dreams. To these kids the ocean is not just a place of fun, it’s an escape from what life used to be. This movie will challenge you with the important things in life, and open your eyes to the power of riding waves, whether you are a surfer or not. Mission Refuge Mexico was founded by a local Catholic community couple, Alan and Pamela Skuse. Pam and Alan arrived in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico in November 2000 to spend 12 months volunteering at an orphanage. The organisation they came to help closed down within 6 months so Pam and Alan were left with the dilemma of what to do regarding the children in their care."It didn’t take long to realize that we could not abandon these kids and because we could see that there was such a great need in this area of work, we decided to stay." Since the refuge was established Pam and Alan have helped around 250 children from various circumstances of need. For more information on Mission Mexico go to www.lovelifehope.com

All proceeds help support the children in Tapachula Mexico.

Nibbles & soft drinks available for purchase on the night. Please join us along with Mt. St. Michael's and Lourdes Hill students. Lucky Door Prize.

Music NewsIn 2006 the music department held the inaugural Blue & Gold concert featuring the College’s top Choral and Instrumental ensembles, performing with members of the College’s wider community including old boys, sisters, parents and teachers. This concert was a great success both musically and also as a chance to catch up with friends of the College’s Music Department. This year we will be holding the concert for the third time on the 20th of May. The concert will again take the format of a Massed Orchestra and Choir, Massed Wind Ensemble as well as some of the student ensembles performing with soloists. This year we have planned to perform a variety of works including compositions by George Gershwin, Hector Berlioz, Ralph Towner and John Rutter. We are trying to contact as many people as we can to be involved and we are especially looking for voices for the massed choir, string players for the Orchestra and wind & percussion players for the Wind Orchestra. We would also appreciate that if you know of anybody who may be interested in participating in the event could you could pass on this information.

If you are interested can you please contact the Music Department as soon as possible, and we will then send you more detailed information and music. Participants would have to be available for the concert on the evening of May 20 and also a full rehearsal on Monday the 3rd of May, 3pm to 8pm, (pizza dinner will be provided).

Please email the Music Department [email protected] to register your interest.

MUSIC UNIFORMSThe uniform for all junior and secondary performing ensembles is a black collared shirt with a Marist Crest and is available from the clothing shop. This is to be worn with black trousers, socks and shoes. This will be the uniform for all groups from Years 5 to 12. If you already have a black collared shirt you must arrange to have the College Crest put on it by the clothing shop. The new shirts can now be ordered from the College Clothing shop. It is hoped that all boys have the uniform ready by Week 7 as this is when the majority of boys will either be performing in the Autumn Bands Concert or Autumn Strings and Choral Concert.

MUSIC THEORYMusic theory and aural group lessons are currently being offered through the Music Department. These lessons are highly recommended for students sitting higher grade A.M.E.B examinations for all instruments. A.M.E.B requires: Grade Two Theory of Music to complete a Sixth Grade Practical Music Examination, Grade Three Theory of Music to complete a Seventh Grade Practical Examination and so on. The Theory and Aural classes are also highly recommended for those students considering applying for tertiary music courses, as a theory and aural examination at some institutions are a requirement when applying and auditioning.

Marist College Ashgrove Junior NewsJUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Dear Parents, Staff and Boys,

As I progress through the Season of Lent, I realise that if it is going to have any affect on myself and those I come into contact with, I need to make it a person journey. This means, that I need to spend a few seconds, preferably at the start of each new day, remembering the challenges that Lent brings. This does not mean anything negative, in fact it’s just the opposite.

Living a life that brings peace and fulfilment to others is liberating and very positive, for all concerned. It is also very freeing and through this daily awareness, we come to realise and experience that the teachings of Jesus Christ do liberate the human being.

A few weeks ago, I came across this short dedication for use during the days of Lent. I hope you find it useful:

Lord God I offer You each moment of this day:

Whatever comes – the unexpected challenges diversions from my plans,

The need-filled glance, the expectations and complaints,

the being taken for granted, the slights and sleights-of-hand.

I’d be grateful if You could keep me aware of my pesky habits, like… And, between us, perhaps we can enliven the spirits of

those I love and work with, like…. Whatever else befalls,

I trust we can cope with it, together.

Amen

SWIMMING

This week is the penultimate week of the season for our CIC and AIC squads. The Senior squad will attend their annual Presentation Dinner on Saturday 6th March where the team is announced and presented with their racing kit. A warm up swim at the Chandler Aquatics Centre will take place on Sunday 7th March to familiarize the swimmers with the environment and conditions at Chandler.

The AIC Championships will take place on Thursday 11th March @ Sleeman Sports Complex Chandler.

A copy of the squad and the program of events can be retrieved from the College website.

All year 11 & 12 students will attend as supporters on the day.

Two weeks ago the College House Swimming Carnival was cut short by the downpour of the decade. The overall winning Houses for the one and a half days of competition were:

1ST FOLEY 17892ND EPHREM 17583RD RIDLEY 17394TH SLATTERY 16925TH GILROY 16796TH IGNATIUS 16497TH RUSH 16438TH HAROLD 1640

There were suggestions that the eventual winner should have been declared using the Duckworth Lewis system!

TENNIS COURT RE-DEVELOPMENT

The impending construction of the new Science

Centre will see the demolition of the existing tennis

courts and junior cricket nets.

After much planning and assessment of suitable

sites to relocate these facilities a decision is likely

to recommend Jack Eales Oval (No. 4) as the new

site. This will also tie in with the re-developed Matt

Hayden Oval (No.3). At this stage no construction

looks likely to take place until the end of Term 2.
